Atlanta, GA. - Trae Young rebounded from his foul-plagued Game 4 performance with an efficient 33-point night to lift the Atlanta Hawks past the Utah Jazz 113-109 in Game 5, putting Atlanta one victory away from the NBA championship.
Young shot 12-for-18 from the field and 3-for-8 from three, displaying the offensive mastery that carried the Hawks throughout the playoffs. His performance offset a spirited Jazz comeback that briefly gave Utah the lead late in the fourth quarter.
The Jazz's hopes took an early hit when Ace Bailey found himself in foul trouble, playing just 8 minutes in the first half and managing only 4 points. With their star sidelined, Bam Adebayo and the rest of Utah's supporting cast had to shoulder the load.
Adebayo stepped up with 16 of his 24 points in the first half, keeping the Jazz competitive as Atlanta built a 13-point advantage by the break. But the reliance on Adebayo early signaled trouble ahead, Utah's offensive system couldn't function at full capacity without Bailey.
Bailey returned for the second half and immediately took over. He scored 28 of his 32 points after halftime, orchestrating a Jazz comeback that brought Utah within striking distance. Late in the fourth quarter, the Jazz briefly seized the lead at 105-103, giving their home fans hope of taking the 3-2 series lead.
But the Hawks refused to fold.
Atlanta outscored Utah 10-4 down the stretch to escape with a 113-109 victory. Defensive ace Dyson Daniels snatched the Jazz's momentum with a steal, followed by a block. Noa Kouakou-Heugue capitalized on the drained Jazz, hitting back-to-back threes to retake the lead before Trae Young and Gary Trent Jr. each sank a pair of free throws to salt away the win.
The Jazz's 17 turnovers and defensive lapses in the final two minutes ultimately cost them the game. Despite shooting 51 percent from the field and 43 percent from three, Utah couldn't overcome the execution issues when it mattered most.
Game 6 will take place in Salt Lake City on June 7th, with the Hawks one win away from their first NBA championship since 1957. The Jazz face elimination but have shown they can compete even with injuries depleting their backcourt.
For Atlanta, Young's efficient performance suggests the Hawks have found their offensive rhythm heading into the Finals-clinching opportunity.
