Living in the Shadows: A Patrick Ewing Jr. Story
Ewing’s Epilogues: Episode 6
February 2nd – D League Showcase
The practice facility here feels different when you walk in as a hopeful instead of a rostered player. The banners hang the same way. The hardwood smells the same. But everything feels heavier when your future depends on a conversation.
I won’t lie — I was nervous.
Not scared of the moment. Just aware of it.
The Timberwolves are 21–29. Thirteenth in the West. 3.5 games back of the eighth-seed Mavericks. Close enough to taste the playoffs, far enough to know there’s no room for mistakes.
Michael Beasley’s fractured right foot ended his season this week. Derrick Williams is sidelined too. Suddenly, wing depth isn’t a luxury — it’s a need.
Wes Johnson. Martell Webster.
And possibly me.
Inside the conference room, Rick Adelman is seated with a legal pad in front of him. Across from him sits GM David Kahn, arms folded, expression unreadable. Kahn drafted Williams. Signed Beasley. Built this roster.
Now he’s looking for answers.
Adelman starts.
Adelman: “You’ve logged most of your minutes at power forward this season. Why are we evaluating you as a wing?”
The nerves disappear.
Ewing Jr: “Because that’s where I belong.”
They don’t interrupt.
Ewing Jr: “Maine needed size and physicality. I gave them that. But I’ve transitioned the last two months. Ball-handling work with Latrell Sprewell. Catch-and-shoot reps. Defensive slides. Guarding twos and threes. I’m not training like a four anymore.”
Kahn leans forward.
Kahn: “Your production ticked up recently. Efficiency too. What changed?”
Ewing Jr: “Clarity. I stopped trying to prove I could bully smaller guys inside. I started focusing on perimeter defense and spacing the floor. Cutting. Running lanes. Making quick decisions.”
Adelman taps his pen lightly.
Adelman: “Tell me about Maine. What did you actually improve?”
Ewing Jr: “Consistency. I earned every minute. Learned to defend quicker players without reaching. Learned to move without the ball. Learned that if you defend and run, coaches find you minutes.”
Kahn flips through a stat sheet.
Kahn: “We’re thin right now. Johnson and Webster can’t absorb everything. If we bring you in, you’re competing immediately. No developmental cushion. You’d be guarding NBA wings.”
Ewing Jr: “That’s what I want.”
Adelman studies me carefully.
Adelman: “We’re chasing the eighth seed. We’re not experimenting. If I put you on the floor, it’s because I trust you defensively. Can you guard starting threes?”
Ewing Jr: “Yes.”
Adelman: “Switch onto twos?”
Ewing Jr: “Yes.”
Adelman: “Play between 8 and 20 minutes and take three to five shots?”
Ewing Jr: “If it helps us win.”
There’s a pause.
Kahn finally speaks again.
Kahn: “Are you chasing a contract… or a role?”
I don’t hesitate.
Ewing Jr: “A role.”
Silence fills the room for a moment. Not awkward. Evaluative.
Adelman closes the notebook.
Adelman: “We’ll be in touch this evening after the rest of the interviews. Thanks for meeting us.”
Meeting over.
Back outside, the cold air hits harder than before. The nerves are gone now. Replaced by something steadier.
A team within a shot of the playoffs.
An open lane at small forward.
A front office watching.
This isn’t about a name.
It’s about timing.

Minnesota Timberwolves Sign Patrick Ewing Jr. for Remainder of 2011–12 Season

Minneapolis, MN — February 2012 — The Minnesota Timberwolves today announced that the team has signed Patrick Ewing Jr. for the remainder of the 2011–12 NBA season.
Ewing Jr., a 6’8” forward, joins Minnesota following a strong stretch with the Maine Red Claws of the NBA D-League, where he demonstrated steady growth and adaptability in his game. Originally utilized primarily as a power forward, Ewing Jr. made a conscious shift this season toward the wing, logging significant minutes at both small forward and shooting guard. The transition allowed him to showcase improved perimeter shooting, ball-handling, and defensive versatility.
“Patrick has earned this opportunity,” said Timberwolves head coach Rick Adelman. “He’s competed at a high level, embraced a new role, and shown he can help us with depth and flexibility on the wing as we push through the remainder of the season.”
Ewing Jr. provides added depth as the Timberwolves manage injuries within the rotation, with the team remaining firmly in the hunt for a Western Conference playoff spot. He is expected to be available immediately.

Yes here we go man! I've spent the last 8 days getting a mynba scenario ready. Simmed to February 2012. Edited all rosters to trade deadline of that season. Created multiple players, downloaded tonnes of cyberfaces. Edited every coach to have real faces. Edited rotations. Simmed a little bit and Timberwolves picked up Ewing Jr.
Going to take a leaf out of The JZA's book here and just play player lock and see what happens for the rest of the season.
A friend of mine made the Ewing Jr cyberface for me. It's pretty slick. Such an upgrade from 2k11/12

Ewing's Epilogues: Episode 7
They called it a showcase weekend.
Turned out to be exactly that.
I've been following the wire closely since I got the call from Minnesota. Guys I shared gyms with, guys I competed against all season — suddenly they're getting their shots too. And honestly? Good for them.
Eddy Curry to Miami. That one made me smile. Big fella worked his tail off in Maine. Lost the weight, rediscovered his game, showed up every single day. Pat Riley doesn't sign guys on sentiment. Eddy earned that.
Bobby Simmons to the Clippers. Eduardo Najera and Derrick Brown both heading to Charlotte — MJ clearly liked what he saw from the Toros and the Armor. Anthony Parker and Kurt Thomas to Cleveland and Portland respectively. Veterans who know their roles, know how to win. Smart pickups.
Cartier Martin to Washington. Alonzo Gee to Cleveland. Patty Mills to San Antonio — Popovich will love that kid. And Jerry Stackhouse still getting it done, heading to Atlanta. Stack never lost it.
The D-League did what it was supposed to do this year.
But I'd be lying if I said everything sat right with me.
Patrick Beverley — nothing. Demetris Nichols — nothing. Mickael Gelabale — nothing.
That one stings.
Bev was electric all season. The energy, the defense, the motor — that's an NBA player right there and anybody who watched him knows it. Nichols and Gelabale were our two best offensive weapons for stretches of the season. Both versatile, both experienced, both deserving of a look.
I don't understand it. I really don't.
Maybe the calls come later. Maybe a team gets thin and the phone rings. It's happened before. It happened to me.
I hope it happens for them.
Maine gave me something this season I hadn't had in a while — belief. Not from coaches or front offices or reporters measuring me against a name I didn't choose. Belief in myself. Quiet, earned, unshakeable.
Sprewell saw it before I did. Oakley reinforced it every single day. Austin Ainge gave me the platform. And those guys — Bev, Demetris, Gelabale, Landry, Curry, all of them — pushed me to be better than I arrived.
I owe Maine that.
Now I'm looking west.
Minnesota is sitting 21-29. 3 and a half games out of eighth in the West. And when I say it's tight out there — I mean it. From eighth place all the way down to thirteenth, there's only just over 3 games separating five teams all scrapping for the same door. Every possession matters. Every defensive stop. Every rotation.
That's exactly the kind of situation I asked for.
Not a developmental cushion. Not a quiet end of a bench somewhere. A real race. Real stakes.
Adelman wants a wing who defends and runs and doesn't need the ball to impact the game. I've spent two months becoming exactly that player.
The Timberwolves are my team now.
Time to show Minnesota what Maine already knows.
Jr out.
