Two and done; Mohammed bolts for Nevada following Howard's best season in decades
Stephen Israel -- HBCU Gameday Sports Writer

Howard's men's basketball head coach Isaiah Mohammed has accepted the head coaching job at the University of Nevada.

The Wolfpak finished 11-20 last season but went 7-9 in WAC play, including finishing the season 5-1 and almost winning the conference tournament. They are also returning all but one starter next season, including two talented players in guard Armon Johnson and center JaVale McGee.

The Mohammed experience in Washington D.C. was ultimately a successful as Mohammed led Howard to their best season since 1992, beating No. 6 Texas early in the season and almost upsetting Gonzaga in the tournament. While many felt confident that Mohammed wouldn't leave after just two seasons, the business of college basketball is that Howard -- and many other programs like it, especially HBCUs -- will always be viewed as a stepping stone job, even for someone like Mohammed who is from the area.

"I will forever be grateful for the opportunity that Howard gave me," said Mohammed during his introductory press conference with the Nevada media, "It was a tough decision to leave but ultimately, I felt it was the right one for myself, my family and my career."

Congrats on the new job. If this is a closed legacy I know how hard it is to get a new job

Gotta have your walk on transfer to Nevada with you though

Caught up, congrats on the Nevada job. Surprised coach left after two seasons but maybe recruits will come easier in the WAC.

Thanks bruh, it is a closed legacy so the job was too good to pass up. I hope he does good with me gone, son was a life saver.

Yeah, hoping the recruiting is better and having a chance to play/coach McGee was very appealing.

New Pack head coach Mohammed sees pro potential in McGee
Jerry Howard -- Reno Gazette Journal Sports Writer

Nevada Wolf Pack head basketball coach Isaiah Mohammed knows a thing or two about NBA centers, having played with one of the greatest of all time in Patrick Ewing both at Georgetown where they won a national championship and during Ewing's formative years with the New York Knicks. He think he has an NBA center on his roster.

"I'll be shocked if he doesn't have a ten-year career in the league," said Mohammed of starting center JaVale McGee, entering his senior season after making first team all-conference in each of the last two seasons.

McGee averaged 12.9 points per game last season along with 2.6 blocks per game, both career highs in what was a down-year for the team but a promising one for McGee. At six-foot-eleven and 240 pounds, the physical tools have always been there for McGee, whose father was drafted in the NBA and his mother was the second overall pick in the WNBA whose twin sister also played in the WNBA.

He's now got a staunch advocate in Mohammed who turned a walk-on true freshman in Schuyler Sinville into an all-conference selection.

"You have to feed the big man," says Mohammed, "Everything starts down low and then spreads out."

Nevada opens the season in four weeks against Montana State but Wolf Pack fans will get a look at the Wolf Pack, who returned all but one starter from last season, next Monday during Midnight Madness.
