Manoah has been somewhat hit or miss but Bassitt is a little inconsistent. Gets too high in his pitch count and we pull him early. It's our bullpen that breaks hearts.
Hoping we can pull a rabbit out of a hat with this one.

Toronto Blue Jays acquire second baseman Brandon Drury from Los Angeles Angels

The Toronto Blue Jays have acquired second baseman Brandon Drury from the Los Angeles Angels, as announced this afternoon. Going the other way is second baseman Cavan Biggio and prospect Jimmy Robbins. Drury was one of the top players in the market and was widely expected to be dealt ahead of the July 31st trade deadline.
Drury, at 32 years old, comes around for his second stint with the Blue Jays, originally playing with the club from 2018 until 2020. He was originally drafted in the 2010 Major League Baseball draft in the 13th round by the Atlanta Braves. He was traded in 2013 to the Arizona Diamondbacks in a deal that landed the Braves Justin Upton. He was called up to the major leagues by the Diamondbacks in 2015. He was traded to the New York Yankees in February of 2018 before landing with the Blue Jays in July of the same year.
He would leave the team in free agency after offensive struggles, opting to sign a minor league contract with the New York Mets in 2021. He wound up in a similar situation with the Cincinnati Reds - signing a minor league contract and then being selected to their active roster. He started with the Reds as their third baseman and had a breakout year, playing in 92 games and hitting .274/.335/.520 splits with 20 home runs. He would enjoy stints with the San Diego Padres and the Los Angeles Angels over the past two years.
Drury has played in 93 games so far in 2024 with the Angels, hitting splits of .255/.330/.445 with 18 home runs and 55 RBIs, and joins a hard-hitting Blue Jays team looking to improve defensively while providing consistent at-bats.
Biggio is a long-term Blue Jay and no doubt a fan favorite who is having a great season and provides the Angels with a strong utility player. He has been with the Blue Jays since being drafted in the fifth round of the 2016 Major League Baseball draft and being called up three years later. Notably, Biggio is the son of Hall of Fame baseball player Craig Biggio.
Jimmy Robbins is one of the top starting pitcher prospects in the Blue Jays farm system and saw his role diminish after the team went pitcher-heavy in the draft. The Angels are in the midst of a rebuild after the departure of all-world superstar Shohei Ohtani.

Toronto Blue Jays extend star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to multi-year contract

The Toronto Blue Jays' fanbase can sleep a little bit easier at night now - their star first baseman isn't going anywhere for a little bit. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has extended his contract with the team, signing a three-year contract worth $86.5 million.
"Being here - and staying here - meant the world to me. I'm glad we were able to get this one done. Back to baseball now." commented an elated Guerrero Jr. after the news of his extension was released to the public. The Blue Jays are notably in the midst of a battle for playoff position; one they are notably struggling to keep pace with.
Another playoff struggle or missing the playoffs made baseball analysts discuss whether the team would end up trading the 25-year-old Canadian-Dominican who signed with the team as an international free agent back in 2015. After early struggles at the plate, the rumors were rampant regarding the Blue Jays dealing the likes of Guerrero Jr., shortstop Bo Bichette, and pitcher Kevin Gausman and heading into a rebuild.
"It's hard to ignore things like that while being in the building and trying every day to improve that situation. You understand that these things are business and business needs to be conducted - but you want to win where you feel you're home. That's where I am now and that's where I continue to want to be." he stated.
The team notably traded pending free agent and long-time Blue Jays Cavan Biggio earlier today to the Los Angeles Angels for second baseman Brandon Drury - further pointing to their intentions to keep pushing to contend and enter the playoffs. The team has a litany of pending free agents to either deal ahead of the July 31st trade deadline (such as catcher Danny Jansen, outfielder Daulton Varsho, and pitcher Yusei Kikuchi) or continue to work on long-term deals while risking losing them for nothing.
At the end of the day, the Blue Jays are at an impasse. But the comfort of knowing they have a homegrown superstar who wanted to stay home and will provide a smidgen of comfort.

Toronto Blue Jays continue front office work, extend outfielders Daulton Varsho and Davis Schneider

If Toronto Blue Jays' General Manager Ross Atkins has maintained anything, it is that his team will be competing for a playoff spot - come Hell or High water. He traded for second baseman Brandon Drury, locked up the face of the franchise Vladimir Guerrero Jr, and now he's pieced together more of the core.
The team has extended outfielder Daulton Varsho to a three-year contract worth approximately $30.4 million and outfielder and designated hitter Davis Schneider to a two-year bargain deal worth $2.7 million. Varsho and Schneider join Guerrero Jr. and George Springer as the top home run hitters for the Jays, so locking down their power hitters was a key win for Atkins and the Blue Jays brass.
Varsho, the 28-year-old outfielder from Marshfield, Wisconsin, was acquired in 2022 from the Arizona Diamondbacks in a stand-out trade that saw Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Gabriel Moreno being sent the other way. In 2023, he led the AL in bunt hints with 11. Varsho has been a standout hitting threat for the Blue Jays in 2024, hitting two home runs yesterday in a 9-2 victory over division rival Tampa Bay Rays - his 16th and 17th of the year.
Schneider, a 25-year-old utility player from Berlin, New Jersey was originally drafted by the Blue Jays in the 28th round of the 2017 Major League Baseball draft and made his debut last year. In his first major league at-bat, Schneider hit a home run off James Paxton of the Boston Red Sox and became the first player in MLB history to collect nine hits, which included two home runs, in his first three games.
Schneider, similarly to Varsho, has broken out this season, leading the AL in hits and has remained at the top of the leaderboard in batting average along with a career-high 21 home runs.

Toronto Blue Jays address bullpen concerns, acquire relief pitcher Nick Sandlin

The Toronto Blue Jays have struck yet another pre-trade deadline deal, sending backup shortstop Addison Barger to the Cleveland Guardians for relief pitcher Nick Sandlin.
One of the biggest weaknesses within the Blue Jays' roster is their lack of quality arms within their bullpen. Too many times the team has been able to get their bats to keep up with the sheer volume of hits and runs the bullpen allows. Once aces such as Kevin Gausman or Yusei Kikuchi are pulled heading into the fifth or sixth inning is typically when the Jays have seen games tumble out of their hands.
In Sandlin, the team adds a 27-year-old from the state of Georgia on the last year of his deal with a $1.1 million salary. Sandlin has seen action in 47 games, in which he pitched 58.1 innings, garnering 2 wins and 3 losses. He's allowed 47 hits and 20 earned runs to get him to an overall 3.09 ERA. He also has 49 strikeouts on the season.
The team isn't expected to be quite done on the trade front with rumors gaining steam that they are looking to improve at third base and add another arm or two in their bullpen. With only eight days remaining, whether Blue Jays' General Manager Ross Atkins will be able to pull any more moves off will be intriguing to see.
