Toronto Blue Jays acquire star Oneil Cruz, prospect from Pittsburgh
Written by Julia Kreuz
In a surprising move, the Pittsburgh Pirates have traded rising star Oneil Cruz to the Toronto Blue Jays. The trade marks a significant shift for both teams, as Cruz, a 6’7” shortstop with a rare combination of power and speed, is expected to become an integral part of the Blue Jays' quest for a World Series title. Going the other way is starting pitcher Yusei Kikuchi and third basemen Justin Turner. Coming with Cruz is pitching prospect Zander Mueth, the Pirates' sixth-highest ranked prospect.
At only 25 years old, Cruz has shown the potential to become one of MLB’s most dynamic shortstops. Known for his towering stature, which is atypical for a player in his position, Cruz combines defensive agility with a level of power rarely seen at shortstop. In 2022, he posted a .233 batting average with 17 home runs, 54 RBIs, and a handful of jaw-dropping plays that made the highlight reel weekly. His 118.4 mph single in 2022 is still among the hardest-hit balls recorded in MLB history, showcasing his ability to drive the ball with immense force.
This season, Cruz has hit 11 home runs, posting that along with a .255 batting average and 45 RBIs after an unfortunate end to his 2023 season. The Pirates are middling in the NL Central and are parting ways with Cruz in his contract year in which he is expected to be one of the more sought-after free agents in this year's class.
Beyond power, Cruz has speed to burn, making him a dual threat on the base paths. His sprint speed consistently ranks among the highest in the league, adding another layer to his offensive value. The Blue Jays see Cruz as a player who can contribute on both sides of the ball—holding his own as an infielder while providing a much-needed jolt of power in their lineup.
Mueth joins a Blue Jays' team looking to restock their farm with prospect arms such as Ricky Tiedemann and Paxton Schultz looking to make the jump from AAA ball to the pros sooner rather than later.
In other news, the team is expecting to bring current AAA pitcher Bowden Francis up from the minors to fill the departed Kikuchi's place in the Blue Jays rotational, which is surprising considering Tiedemann was widely expected to get the nod.
The team has also dealt relief pitcher Trevor Richards to the Atlanta Braves for reliever Pierce Johnson, opting for a different look in the struggling Blue Jays' bullpen.

It's tight as hell. Seems like only three of us are making the playoffs.
