Notts County made history ahead of the 2024–25 season by appointing Leanne Ross as manager, becoming the first woman to manage a men’s club in the English Football League. The decision marked a landmark moment for English football and a bold statement of intent from the club.
Ross arrived with an outstanding pedigree from the women’s game. During a hugely successful spell at Glasgow City FC, she established herself as one of the most accomplished coaches in Europe. She led the club to multiple Scottish Women’s Premier League titles, several Scottish Cups and League Cups, and guided City to consistent UEFA Women’s Champions League appearances, including deep runs into the knockout stages. Known for her tactical clarity, player development, and relentless standards, Ross built a dynasty in Scotland before deciding it was time for a new challenge.
Her move into the men’s professional game places her alongside Sabrina Wittmann, currently coaching in Germany, as the only women managing men’s teams in Europe’s top leagues. Ross has been clear about her ambition: to be judged purely on performance, not novelty.
On the pitch, she plans to implement a high-pressing, aggressive 4-4-2 system, built on intensity, compact lines, and quick vertical play. It is a style designed to energise supporters, unsettle opponents, and signal a fearless new era for the club.
