AJAX SHIFTS UP ANOTHER GEAR: 8-1 WIN
It's still early season, but the start by Ajax has simply been sensational. And if one thought the 5-1 home win against NEC, or the 4-1 away win at Twente were brilliant, here was the team of Daniel Marzec shifting up another gear: club Fortuna from the city of Sittard were demolished in the Johan Cruijff Arena in Amsterdam: 8-1! By halftime, the score board already read 4-0. It was the night of
Maher Carrizo, with the Argentinean winger producing half of the tally scored by Ajax.
Pundits lauded the Ajax metamorphosis: "Initially, it would seem
Daniel Marzec has brought Ajax back in a position where Director Jordi Cruijff wants them to be. The dominating force in Dutch football, with intense, dominating, attacking total football. That's a remarkable feat given the rather modest mutations to the squad. But under Marzec Ajax is looking so much more intense and hungry for goals, than they were under the last half dozen of Ajax managers. We really need to go back to the heydays of the Erik ten Hag-era to find an Ajax comparible to the current one."
Football reporter Dries Valentijn however, immediately argued a sidenote: "It could be that Ajax has grown but the Eredivisie hasn't: meaning, we need to wait and see how this Ajax will hold at the highest level in
UEFA Champions League, or against more serious opposition on a national level, that is: the top games against PSV and Feyenoord. Only then, can we see if these improvements have taken Ajax to a higher level. Otherwise, it's just a similar team to the most recent ones, only with a slightly more intense type of play."
