2024 Summer Transfer Deadline Wrap-Up

Robert Renan poses for a photo with the manager after signing on deadline day.

Wolves had a busy transfer deadline day, the club sold Goncalo Guedes early on in the day for £8M to Crystal Palace after he was deemed surplus to requirements by Mourinho. Guedes stands just 5'10 and with Jose's desire to make a 5-2-3 system with a target man striker work, the recently signed 6'1 Gustavo Sa is looked at as a better backup option for Fabio Silva despite being an attacking midfielder by trade. After concluding that deal, Wolves completed a £2.7M deal for Zhu Chenjie from Shanghai Shenua of the Chinese Super League. The 24 year old is an extremely athletic 6'1 center back, capable of fitting in as a rotation option for the wide RCB role in the back 5. Lastly, Wolves agreed a deal to buy 20 year old left footed CB, Robert Renan from Al Shabab of the Saudi Professional League. The Brazilian, like Chenjie, is an extremely athletic player capable of playing in a wide CB role just on the other side as an LCB. He will be cover for an likely and eventual replacement for Toti in the position.

Before the window wrapped, Wolves were unsettled by a late bid from Manchester United for Fabio Silva. United came in with a very undervalued bid of £30M, and when Wolves responded that the player's price was £50M, they immediately walked away --- increasingly common these days for United with the more frugal INEOS in charge of footballing operations. Silva will remain at Wolves for the season. This marked the end of a very busy transfer window for Wolves in which they reformed the squad in José Mourinho's image. 13 players joined and 13 exited for a total net spend of about £25M.

2024-25 Wolves Squad Announcement

Image
Wolves announce their 23 man squad for the 2024-25 season post deadline day.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have entered the 2024-25 season under the stewardship of José Mourinho, with the Portuguese tactician shaping the squad into a disciplined 5-2-3 built on structure, grit, and clinical counterattacks.

At the back, José Sá remains the trusted figure in goal, shielded by a youthful but promising defensive line. Eduardo Quaresma anchors the central unit alongside Toti and Samú Costa, while captain Nélson Semedo and Leonardo Lelo patrol the flanks as wing-backs, giving Wolves width in transition.

The midfield two of Fred and João Gomes provide balance: Fred brings experience and composure on the ball, while Gomes offers relentless energy and bite. Depth options such as Tomás Händel and André ensure Mourinho can rotate without sacrificing solidity.

Up front, Wolves boast a dangerous trio. Matheus Cunha’s flair from the left, 17-year-old prodigy Geovany Quenda’s raw pace and skill on the right, and Fábio Silva’s intelligent movement through the middle form the attacking trident. Young talents like Carlos Forbs and Rodrigo Gomes add further dynamism off the bench.

Mourinho’s Wolves may not dominate possession, but they embody his trademark resilience—compact in defense, ruthless on the break, and brimming with Portuguese identity. This is a Wolves side built to frustrate giants and deliver statement wins.

Up and down results since the window here.

Goodbye Hwang - I know why you sold him (he doesn’t fit your requirements here), but he’s a bit of a fan favorite and it makes me sad all the same.
