Kwamele Owusu's Spurs have shown that they can compete in the Premier League. Can they win it?
So much was made of Spurs manager Kwamele Owusu's lack of experience as a first-team manager, let alone the Premier League. The former Borussia Dortmund assistant coach answered questions about his abilities as a first-team manager, securing a thirty five point improvement from Tottenham in his first season.
It wasn't without hiccups. A 2-0 loss to Leeds in October. The 6-1 drubbing at the hands of Liverpool around Christmas time. Failing to secure three points against Sunderland twice. Those shortcomings ultimately was the difference between the Spurs playing in Champions League football and Europa League but for a team that was fighting off relegation a year ago, this is a welcomed change.
The Spurs will look to build from their first season under Owusu, primarily addressing their 47 goals allowed, second most among top eight teams with Liverpool being the only team with a worst defensive record. There's also decisions looming surrounding Randal Kolo Muani, the team's top goal scorer whose loan deal expires in the summer. Do they bring back the Frenchmen or make another run at Victor Osimhen, who they have been linked to in the past?
The midfield needs to be stabilized with Rodrigo Bentancur's rumored departure to Manchester City and James Maddison's long term future at the club. Has Archie Gray and Lucas Gergvall played themselves into being regulars or will they look to add some veteran presence in a young midfield?
There are plenty of questions in what promises to be an exciting summer for the Spurs.
