Amorim Set to Change his System After Poor First Half of the Season

Despite originally stating he would not change, Amorim will change to a 4-3-3 after a poor start to 2027-28 in alignment with Wilcox's wishes.
It’s January 1st, 2028, and the mood around Old Trafford is one of growing unease. Manchester United’s bold academy-first experiment has hit turbulence, with the club sitting fifth in the Premier League on 33 points, already 10 points adrift of leaders Manchester City. In Europe, the picture is no brighter. United are 12th in the Champions League league phase, hovering a few points outside the automatic round of 16 places and facing a tense second half of the campaign.
Rúben Amorim’s preferred 3-4-2-1 has failed to gain traction, struggling to provide both defensive stability and consistent attacking patterns. After months of internal discussions, sporting director Jason Wilcox and CEO Omar Berrada have now formally demanded a tactical shift. Amorim, who already compromised this season by committing fully to a youth-only squad, has agreed to take another step by abandoning his system in favor of the 4-3-3 model favored by Wilcox and Berrada, shaped by their time at Manchester City.
