With the Brand Split over, Christian and Edge were free to work together again, and Edge chose to come manage his buddy and long-time tag partner Christian in his King of the Ring match. Unfortunately Christian had an extremely tough task ahead of him, taking on the #1 overall seed: The Game, Triple H. Christian came out of the gates hot as the underdog and caught HHH off guard. His mistake came when he climbed the top rope looking for a home-run. HHH was simply too smart to be beaten that way and got his knees up and into Christian's chest to counter. He then threw him against the ropes and hit him with the Spinebuster on the rebound before delivering a Pedigree that sent him through to the next round. No Cinderella story here.

The 12-5 matchup is the most common upset in the NCAA, could Goldust replicate that here? It certainly looked like it. In what some expected to be a squash match between these two eerie characters, it carried on much longer than expected. Goldust hit Kane with a Final Cut almost out of nowhere, and it looked like he had it won but the Big Red Machine kicked out at the last moment. That frustrated Goldust and left him out of ideas. The time he wasted wondering what to do next only gave Kane more opportunity to recover, and when he did, he delivered a thunderous Chokeslam to Goldust to book his ticket to the quarter-finals.

In another matchup of similarly out of this world characters, former and longest reigning Hardcore Champion, Voodoo was set to come face to face with the Deadman, The Undertaker. We didn't exactly get the heavyweight matchup we thought we would here. Voodoo did a mystical dance at the start of the match then tried to punch Taker who just... caught it. He then Chokeslammed Voodoo and immediately picked him back up for a Tombstone. One, two, three. Match over in less than 20 seconds. Undertaker advances to face his brother Kane in the Quarter-Finals next week.

These two have major history with each other, both in their personal lives and in their feud not long ago for the Intercontinental Championship that ended with Eddie temporarily sidelining Mysterio with an injury. The bad blood was still there, particularly on Mysterio's end, as these two looked not only to get to the quarter-finals, but to damage and demoralize each other. Rey struck first, tripping up Guerrero into perfect position for a 6-1-9 and then hitting the West Coast Pop, but the combination that had won him countless matches before was only good enough for a two count. Rey kept pressing but Eddie then gained the upper hand and hit his Three Amigos suplexes before going for the Five-Star Frog Splash. Then Eddie did what he does best, propping his feet up on the ropes for leverage while the referee counted. The extra advantage was enough to keep Rey pinned for three seconds as Eddie advanced and rolled out of the ring immediately to celebrate with Mysterio absolutely fuming in the ring.

Bulldog came out wearing his Hart Foundation jacket and from the get-go it was obvious what was going to happen here. When the bell rang, Bulldog just lay down in the ring and let the leader of the Foundation, Bret Hart, cover him for the easy victory and free pass to the Quarter-Finals. The crowd was not pleased at all and heavily booed the actions of the two stars.

This one was David vs Goliath but Y2J definitely did not have God on his side or a slingshot. Show physically dominated the former Intercontinental Champion, and even added insult to injury by locking him in the Walls of Jericho at one point during the matchup. Jericho would rally a bit after that, but a surprise chokeslam later on in the bout would spell victory for Show and earn him a spot in the quarters.

X-Pac came out with D-Generation X's enforcer Chyna by his side, which should've given him a solid advantage. It didn't. Benoit put on an absolute wrestling clinic, and the only real sliver of hope for X-Pac came when he somehow kicked out of Benoit's Diving Headbutt. That hope would burn out later when Benoit hit a trio of German Suplexes before locking in the Crippler Crossface submission hold in the center of the ring. With nowhere to go, Pac was forced to submit as Benoit locked up his spot in the quarter-finals and became the first star in the Round of 16 to win by submission.

Showstopper versus Charismatic Enigma in the final match of the Round of 16 of the King of the Ring tournament. And though this was #2 vs. #15, a matchup between two electric stars like Hardy and Michaels was bound to be exciting. The two traded high flying moves and seemingly had a counter for everything the other guy did. Things turned when it looked like Jeff was about to take HBK down with a Swanton Bomb, but HBK reversed it into a... Sharpshooter? He locked it in tightly, and Jeff was eventually forced to tap. It looks like this could've been a message to Shawn's long-time rival Bret Hart. Or could it be for Benoit, who had just gotten the first submission win just before?

i dont see any upsets in terms of the final four happening. maybe kane or benoit can sneak in possibly

Eddie Guerrero's wily moves and craftiness had HHH on the backfoot for most of this matchup, as he simply couldn't deal with the speed of Latino Heat. Eddie almost had him beat two, hitting a Frog Splash after the Three Amigos, but Stephanie McMahon distracted the referee to prevent him from counting to three. Eddie was pissed off about that and went to argue with both the referee and Stephanie after that, and HHH took advantage, rolling him up into a small package from behind to grab the victory.

Big Show just... physically dominated the Heartbreak Kid. HBK was one of the favourites to go on far in this tournament, but right out of the gates, Show didn't even let him get any offense in. Michaels tried to create some space by leaving the ring, but Show just came after him and continued brutalizing him on the outside. He then winded Michaels with a powerful leg to the chest, before chokeslamming him after he was slow to get up from the last attack. By that point the ref was already at a 7 count, and Big Show just rolled back into the ring and raised his hand up in victory as the referee counted to 10 to give him the victory.

This was a very technical matchup between two of the best in-ring technicians in sports entertainment. The pace of the match was high but it took place low to the mat as both guys showcased their impressive abilities with grappling holds and submissions. Bret managed to nearly get Benoit locked in the Sharpshooter, but the Rabid Wolverine maneuvered his way out of it and slipped behind Hart. He then hit him with a trio of German Suplexes, before climbing the top rope and hitting the Diving Headbutt. The crowd seemed to expect that Bret would kick out, but he didn't, and with that a second major upset had happened with arguably the two top in-ring performers, Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels, knocked out of the tournament.

The two Brothers of Destruction went head to head in a colossal matchup of The Undead against a Demon from Hell. It was clear though, that the older brother, Undertaker who was fresh off a win over Voodoo last week, was the better wrestler. The match was even, but Taker was the one who seemingly had the edge throughout. That culminated in a Tombstone Piledriver in the center of the ring. But Kane kicked out. Taker's eyes were wide with disbelief, but he quickly recouped and went for a second Tombstone. Kane reversed this one though, hitting Taker with a Tombstone of his own that the Deadman would not kick out of, as the younger brother Kane, pulled the upset over Taker. After the match, Kane could sense his brother's embarrassment at losing and they embraced amicably despite having been opponents for the last 15 minutes. Could this spell the return of the Brothers of Destruction as a tag team?
