Can Beavers' Continue To Grow In 2027...Or Have They Already Plateaued?
Ricky McKinley // Dam DailyPublished: August 31st, 2027

The question everyone is asking about Oregon State football heading into 2027 is: are we a team on the rise, or did we already reach the plateau in a Group of Six conference?

It's a valid point, to be sure. The newest rendition of the Pac-12 is far from the powerhouse of previous generations, even with Boise State headlining the conference and the emergence of our beloved Beavers. If we've learned anything about the new age of college football, the disparity between the haves and have-nots is wider than ever. We almost saw that play out in real time when South Carolina courted Armando Leon, our rising star defensive coordinator, despite only one year of coaching under his belt.

The Beavers of 2026 took care of business when they were supposed to—ugly loss to Washington State aside—but were clearly overmatched against the likes of Oregon and Texas Tech. When they drew the 16th-ranked SMU Mustangs, who had narrowly missed the ACC Conference Championship Game, in the Holiday Bowl, many predicted another rough outing to close out the 2026 season for the Beavers.

Instead, Oregon State arrived in San Diego with a chip on their shoulder and stunned the Mustangs 31-28, pushing the Beavers to a 10-win season one year removed from a 10-loss campaign. The message from the Beavers was clear; we don't shy away from any challenge. The next step? Closing the gap between themselves and other premier teams around the country.

This offseason, the Beavers made all the moves you'd expect from a team on the rise. It's not hyperbole to say the offense was subpar for much of the season, with much of the blame landing fully on Kallen Gutridge's shoulders. That isn't to say the quarterback didn't have his moments, but they were few and far between. More often than not, our top-10 rated defense was left to fend off the opposition praying that the offense would produce enough points to give them a cushion. A team with aspirations of continuing to elevate their profile addresses that situation in the offseason, not hoping it fixes itself with a year of experience.

And Oregon State did just that, poaching former Ole Miss QB AJ Maddox. Maddox is a more polished version with similar upside to Gutridge, with a superb arm, and while head coach Jonathan Smith didn't state that it was Maddox's job to lose, the whispers out of Corvallis are that Maddox is almost assuredly going to be the starter.

The other glaring issue for the Beavers was replacing the glut of production that departed defensively during graduation. Oregon State recorded 62 sacks in 2026, ranked 2nd nationally, but only Kelze Howard (5), Sailasa Vadrawale III (4), and Kodi DeCambra (1) are returning from that top-ranked unit. To say they addressed that issue would be an understatement, according to some analysts and defensive coordinator Armando Leon.

"You look at the talent we added in the portal, and it's substantial," the now second-year coordinator said after the portal window closed. "We did a lot of mixing and matching last year, trying to maximize the talent we had on the roster with what we needed on the field. But this year, we got guys that are versatile. Manu Hasty can clean up everything in between the lines, Jalen Smith is a ferocious pass-rusher with great bend, who has the ability to drop in coverage when needed. We love JVP out of Oregon and from my conversations with him, he's got a chip on his shoulder this year.

"And don't overlook both Omar and Kris. Their addition frees up Kodi DeCambra to move to cornerback full-time, which should really help our secondary coverage out. He's probably one of our best pure coverage defenders, being able to slot him opposite of Sailasa is going to be huge helping us eliminate the chunk plays on the back end that plagued us last year."

The Beavers went out and got the pieces they needed on both sides of the ball; now the question is can they build on last year's success without the disguise of ambiguity?

"Last year, no one expected them to shoot to the top like they did," one Pac-12 athletic director stated anonymously, "But now? Everyone wants to kind of put them back in their place so to speak. It's a great story on the outside, but on the inside it kind of intensifies the scrutiny. Every AD in the conference is looking at their guys now saying 'why couldn't we do that? We have the same resources.' I can tell you, my program definitely has taken a hard look in the mirror and wondered what they did that we aren't."

Unlike last season, where the Beavers went on the road to Houston before hosting ranked Texas Tech in Week 2, the Beavers have a soft opening in 2027.

They open the season hosting FCS Portland State, then follow that up with a visit from the New Mexico State Lobos, but from there things ramp up quickly. A trip to Autzen Stadium and the 5th-ranked Oregon Ducks looms large in Week 3, followed by road contests at BYU and Ole Miss before diving into conference play.

"I think everyone has that Oregon game circled; that's where we see how good this Oregon State team really is," confessed Jonathan Smith after a Friday practice, "But I know AJ is really looking forward to the trip back to Oxford as well.

"But regardless of how we do in non-conference play, the ultimate goal is another Pac-12 Championship and we can't lose sight of that goal. Stacking a few wins before we get there would be preferred, however."

The Beavers shocked the Pacific Northwest last season; now we'll see if they can do it again.

Stay tuned for the pre-game coverage of Week 1's tilt against the Portland State Vikings and a new year of "Leon's Lowdown."

Until then, keep building that dam, Beaver Nation!

Beaver Up! Who's Got Next For Beaver Nation?
Ricky McKinley // Dam DailyPublished: September 2nd, 2027

Taking a look back at my notes from last year, one thing instantly stuck out to me differentiating last year's season-opening big board, and this year's. Last year, the Beavers had eight players ranked in the top 1,000 nationally, and would eventually only land four of those athletes. While the final haul from this year's class remains to be seen, the fact that number has ballooned to 15 shows the shifting perception in Beaver Nation.

You'll notice that despite their rising profile, and reported interest according to some sources, there are no 4-star prospects on the Beavers board. I'm told that while they did receive notice of interest from some of those upper-tier recruits, most notably within the Pacific Northwest, they're focusing their assets on more "attainable" recruits according to Armando Leon.

"The fact of the matter is, do we have interest from some of the upper prep recruits? Absolutely. But when push comes to shove, we don't necessarily have the resources, at this time, to contend with the other schools that also have interest in those recruits.

"Do we foolhardily barrel into the fray anyway, dedicating time and resources too what will ultimately be a lost cause? Or spend those resources making sure that the guys that are more in our purview are thoroughly scouted so we know exactly what we're getting? I know where my money would go."

It's the ugly truth of the current landscape in college football. Money talks, bullshit walks. And until the Beavers brand can elevate their paltry NIL fund—in comparison to the other Oregon program up north—we've got to make do with what we've got.

2027 Week One Preview - Portland State (0-0) @ Oregon State (0-0)
Ricky McKinley // Dam DailyPublished: September 3rd, 2027

It's been a long, yet fruitful, offseason, but the moment of truth is finally here for Beaver Nation as they prepare to host the FCS Portland State Vikings to kick off the 2027 season.

Having a warm-up game is a welcome difference from last season, where we jumped headfirst into the campaign with a trip to the Houston Cougars. This year, the coaching staff has time to integrate the new pieces and get a little creative, as defensive coordinator Armando Leon will elaborate on in the first "Leon's Lowdown" of the 2027 season.

But, before we get there, let's take a brief look at how the boys stack up against Portland State.

Leon's Lowdown

RM: "Good to see you again, Coach Mando. Hope the offseason, what little you get to enjoy away from the grind, treated you well. Let's jump right into it, with a FCS program like Portland State set up as the opener what are some things you're hoping to see out of your team to kick off 2027?"

AL: "The grind never stops, Ricky, but this is what we sign up for. The biggest thing we want to see to open the season is consistency. Whether you're opening against Ohio State or the Ohio Bobcats, you want to see what you spent all summer working on translate onto the field. And then you want to see them execute. Again, just 'cause we're playing an FCS program doesn't mean we can lollygag into it. I've been on the other side, coming in with an FCS school and leaving with a win. It's happened to bigger programs than ourselves. So if I had to choose two things, it's consistency and execution, Ricky."

RM: "Gives us a peek behind the curtain, who's a guy you think is underrated on this defense going into the season?"

AL: "I'd say JVP, for sure. Jimmy Van Pelt didn't get any run last year at Oregon, which is sometimes the problem at those larger programs—it's easy to get buried. He and Shamar are going to rotate opposite of Kelze, but we expect big things from JVP this season."

RM: "Is he the next Ka'eo Akana?"

AL: "He's the next JVP, Ricky. Ka'eo was lightning in a bottle last year. Entering his 5th-year of eligibility, having never recorded a sack, to explode for 16 is Hollywood type stuff. But we expect JVP to have a big season and to continue it next year."

RM: "Alright, before we let you out of here I've got to ask the question—the readers have practically demanded it. We all know you took the visit in Columbia last year. How close were we to losing Coach Mando?"

AL: "I'm grateful for the opportunity provided by the University of South Carolina to tour their facilities and spend some time with their leadership team. But, I'm committed to Oregon State. I'm not committing to a long time, just a good time. We never know what the future is going to bring, but this season the mantra is the same. One game at a time, until we reach the end. I tell my team not to look ahead, to focus on the challenge directly in front of us. It would be disingenuous on my part to preach that, then keep one eye on the rumor mill for potential openings."

•••

If the whole team is as locked in as Coach Mando? Look out, Vikings.

I for one am excited to see how these new-look defense comes together. We all saw the mixing and matching Coach Leon did throughout the season, but the early reports are this team is more "multiple" at each position, meaning they've got athletes who can fill a variety of roles, as opposed to last year when Hasson Manning Jr was in pass-rushing situations, but Jaheim Patterson was on the field for pass coverage.

As far as a prediction...not going to touch that one. It's going to be ugly, but I'm not putting a number on it. Like Coach Leon said, we want to see a full team effort in the win. Everything else is gravy.

Vikings Can't Breach The Dam
Ricky McKinley // Dam DailyPublished: September 4th, 2026

The Vikings were known throughout history as vicious conquerors, but those are not the same kind of Vikings that attempted to storm Reser Stadium and proceeded to get trounced by the Oregon State Beavers to kick off the 2027 season.

Just three plays into the game and Kelze Howard was already wreaking havoc, sacking the Portland State quarterback and stripping the ball, which would be recovered by Shamar Meikle in the end zone before the clock hit zero.

Things went from bad to worse on the ensuing kickoff, as wide receiver Malachi Durant turned into a battering ram, leveling the return man to force the fumble that Jadyn Walker would trot into the end zone.

And like that, the rout was on.

In the end, the Oregon State Beavers tallied nine sacks, sixteen tackles for loss, and forced six fumbles, four of which were recovered in the 44-0 shellacking.

That's not to say there weren't areas of drastic concern, but more on that later. First, let's take it to Armando Leon live from the post-game press conference.

•••

Question One - Olivia LeRusso (Oregonlive): "Your defense put on a clinic on the field at Reser Stadium today, Coach. Was this the kind of performance you expected from the team, despite so many new pieces defensively?"

Armando Leon: "Absolutely, Olivia. At the end of the day, Portland State is still a collegiate football program. But if we want to act like a big dog, we've got to bite like one. That was the tone we set all week, come out and show them why last year wasn't enough. We may have a ton of new pieces, but they're all guys with experience. It's not always as easy as plug and play, but getting a warm-up game to acclimate ourselves with each other is always a blessing."

Question Two - Chip Swarley (CW Sports): "There were a lot of questions in the offseason about how your defense would replace the 52 sacks that walked out the door at graduation. Internally, how concerned was the team about losing ground in the sack department?"

Armando Leon: "Zero, Chip. We've got a scheme in place to let athletes shine. We went out and got athletes in the portal and through recruiting that complement the guys already in the program. This is the standard we've set, and the standard we expect to uphold regardless of the opponent on the other side."

Question Three - John Paul (PSU Vanguard): "Coach, stepping away from the defense for a minute. How concerning is it for a team playing against an FCS school to witness their offense struggle to this degree? Between defense and special teams, 28 of the 44 points were provided for them. In fact, the offense only produced a lone touchdown in the 2nd quarter. Time to panic in Corvallis?"

Armando Leon: "You guys can keep trying to bait me into throwing Mitch under the bus, but it ain't going to happen. Just like we've got new pieces, so do they. New quarterbacks aren't always plug and play, especially when they come with a different skill set and less familiarity with the group. If the offense scores zero points or a hundred points, my job is the same. Keep the team nor wearing out jersey from scoring points. Period."

•••

Coach is right, I don't know where John from Portland State's student paper thought that question would get him. We saw it all last season, Coach Leon is more than willing to throw shots at his opps, but holds it down for his own.

But if he won't do it, I will.

THEY HAVE TO GET MORE OUT OF THE OFFENSE.

Alright, deep breath. But seriously, 292 total yards and under 100 passing yards for Maddox against PORTLAND STATE? Gutridge & Co did more damage against SMU than Maddox did against an FCS school.

It's week one. Familiarity with teammates and a scheme is real. I'm not hitting the panic button yet, but I've moved it out of the junk drawer and onto the counter, at the very least.

Would say about time that defense looked elite but it was against an FCS school so let's see next game.

2027 Week Two Preview - New Mexico (1-0) @ Oregon State (1-0)
Ricky McKinley // Dam DailyPublished: September 10th, 2027

The competition ramps up, only slightly, for the Beavers' next 2027 opponent as the New Mexico State Lobos make the trip up to the PNW and Reser Stadium.

Our boys took care of business in Week One, some more than others, and will look to build upon that success against the Lobos, with a huge showdown against rival Oregon next week.

Before we get Coach Leon's take on not looking ahead to Oregon and staying focused on the task at hand, let's take a quick gander at how these two programs measure up.

Leon's Lowdown

RM: "Alright, Coach. The competition from Week One to Week Two is a gradual climb, to put it mildly. How do you balance letting the team celebrate a dominant outing, while keeping the level of competition in perspective?"

AL: "It's a fine line, Ricky. On one hand, you want the guys to feel good after putting that kind of performance on tape. But also, it's what we should expect to do against an FCS school. The guys have done a great job being excited about their individual and team performances, while also keeping focus on the fact that a tip in the wrong direction will erase all of those 'feel good' moments in a hurry. New Mexico is going to be looking to surprise us early, hoping we're still hungover from the celebration. So long as we keep making our next game, our best game, we'll be just fine."

RM: "On the subject of focusing on the next game, how much have you and your staff discussed the upcoming trip to Autzen Stadium?"

AL: "Hasn't crossed my mind yet, Ricky. We know it's coming, but whether we prepare for it now or later, it's not going anywhere. We've got to make the journey to get there first and if we want to go into Autzen with momentum, it starts against the Lobos. 'Cause I guarantee you they aren't looking ahead; they'll be ready to make a statement and knock us down a peg."

RM: "Let's shift back to your defense for a minute. Manu Hasty was everything we expected him to be and more against Portland State. Is that the kind of performance we can expect all year long?"

AL: "Health willing, I believe so. I wasn't blowing smoke when I said he's got sideline-to-sideline speed and great instincts, and both of those flashed against Portland State. When you consider that his assignment was covering the back in the flat on his touchdown, it's a helluva play. He had to not only see the hit that knocked the ball loose, but sprint from the far side of the field, locate the ball, have the balance to scoop and keep running, then the agility to finish the play. If that doesn't show you all the tools he's got on the toolbelt, I don't know what will."

Coach is fired up and has these boys focusing one game at a time; we would expect nothing less at this point. While this isn't technically looking ahead, the Beavers are going to need to see a LOT more out of AJ Maddox against the Lobos this weekend, otherwise no matter how much they've prepared for Oregon, it's going to go badly.

I'm willing to give him a bad game to get acclimated, but it's put up or shut up time.

Even if the offense falters, we saw this defense can generate their own plays, with the help of special teams, in a pinch.

Make sure to put the kids to bed early in this one ladies and gentlemen, I think this is going to be another 45-3 type massacring.

Beavers' Defense Forces Three Straight Turnovers To Bury Lobos Late
Ricky McKinley // Dam DailyPublished: September 11th, 2027

On paper, this is another blowout by the Oregon State Beavers, as expected. Anyone watching the game, however, knows just how close this one really was and who was behind the Beavers' 4th-quarter explosion that ultimately buried the Lobos.

Down 24-14 with the ball and about four minutes left, the New Mexico Lobos had a chance. They'd already scored with a 63-yard catch and run by Deriece Brown on their previous possession and another scoring drive would put all the pressure on the home team.

But that's when the defense stepped up and slammed the door shut with authority. DT JoJo Johnson bulldozed his blocker, nearly knocking them into the quarterback, before nearly breaking quarterback Enrique Bullitt in half and forcing the fumble, which would be recovered by Shamar Meikle in the end zone. It was the first of three straight turnovers to finish off the game by the Beavers' defense—tallying a safety on the next possession before a Harlem Howard interception sent the Lobos off the field permanently.

Before we address just how close this game was before the defense took their play to a whole 'nother level, let's see what Coach Leon thinks about the final four minutes during his post-game presser.

Question One - Chip Swarley (CW Sports): "The Lobos made a game of this with a few drives in the second half. What adjustments did they make that caught you off guard and how did you find the spark in the final four minutes to snuff them out?"

Armando Leon: "I didn't see any wholesale adjustments on their part that broke the offense out of its rut in the second half, just more misplays on our part. I'm not saying that to slight the Lobos at all, but a couple of bad pursuits left DJ running for 20+ twice on the opening drive out of the half. Brown's 63-yard touchdown was just bad fundamentals, Trey simply can't have inside leverage and play him underneath, then let him catch the ball anyways.

"As far as the sudden turnaround, I challenged my captains: Manu, JoJo, and Jalen. Told them it was time to lead by example and wake this unit the hell up. They immediately were getting in guys' faces, pressing the issue. Then they backed it up. Manu blew up a screen pass for a loss, putting them close to the end zone, then JoJo practically murdered Bullitt for the fumble. And lastly, Jalen pulled down Bullitt for the sack and safety."

Question Two - Jose Romero (NMSU Round Up): "You take the final four minutes away and the Lobos are right in this game, despite some big plays from your defense. What would you say to someone suggesting the Lobos lost this game, rather than you winning it?"

Armando Leon: "Well, Jose, that's why we play 60 minutes of football. Did New Mexico give us a run for our money? 100%. Hats off to 'em, they made some big plays in the second half to put the pressure on us. But good teams step up and finish games. We did, they didn't. Did the Lobos hand us the ball to return for a touchdown, or take a knee in the end zone for the safety? Didn't think so. So to suggest we didn't win the game, when we made the plays that decided it, is some of the dumbest BS I've heard all year."

Question Three - Olivia LeRusso (Oregonlive): "Coach, I know you preached all week that this game was the focus, but now that it is over can we finally ask what your confidence level is going into Autzen Stadium next week? And does this type of performance in the clutch inspire confidence in your defense?"

Armando Leon: "I always have confidence in my defense, Olivia. I know how hard we prepare, the standard we've set, and the dedication of every single man in that locker room. I'd put my guys against anybody and while that might seem foolhardy for some, it's a belief here in Corvallis. We're ready for Oregon and they'd better be ready for us. And before anyone asks—no, I'm not going to guarantee a win. Don't tweet me, don't ask in interviews, it ain't happening."

It's a double-edged sword. You love that the defense was able to put the game away themselves at the end, no doubt about it. But the fact that they had to? Not exactly inspiring confidence heading into Autzen Stadium.

AJ Maddox was supposed to unlock this offense. Instead, he has less than 250 passing yards through two games, without a touchdown. The defense is holding their own, a few big plays aside, but you can't expect them to hold up the same against the fast-paced Ducks offense if the Beavers' own offense can't keep drives alive.

I gave them a game and we got the same results two weeks in a row. Until they show me something, this offense is the same as last year's unit.

A liability.
