2028 Week Six Preview: Rutgers Scarlet Knights (2-3) @ Maryland Terrapins (3-1)
Marcus Washington // TerpsvillePublished: October 6th, 2028

Maryland may have dropped a potential second-straight AP-ranked upset when they gave up 14 4th-quarter points to the Washington Huskies in the eventual 24-20 loss, but have a great opportunity to get back on track against rival Rutgers in Week 6. The Scarlet Knights haven't won a game since conference play started and while they have some talent on the roster, the reality is they haven't scored more than 19 points in their three-game losing streak.

After the stat graphic we'll get to the next edition of "Inside the Shell" with Coach Leon as he addresses the unfortunate 4th quarter against Washington, the state of the offense, and what the team needs to do to get back on track.

Inside the Shell

MW: "Welcome back to another edition of "Inside the Shell" with Coach Leon. Coach, after a tough loss against Washington, what is the team's mindset going into a rivalry game against Rutgers?"

AL: "We're keeping a practical mindset, Marcus. We prepare for each week with the expectation to win, so when you come up short of your goal it is disappointing. However, it's also important to keep things in perspective. Going into this season, Washington was penciled in as a loss by most talking heads. With that mindset, we led a team ranked 21st-nationally until late in the 4th-quarter, that was supposed to beat us anyways, it's an encouraging win. But we can't rest on our laurels; Rutgers has talent and it's a rivalry game to boot. We'll need to be at our best to keep the losses from snowballing."

MW: "The offense stagnated in the second half against Washington, and you've taken full ownership of that. What do you want to see from the offense to make sure they don't fall into the same pattern against Rutgers?"

AL: "Absolutely, Marcus. I gave the directive to kill the clock and run the ball, try to get manageable 3rd downs, and limit the possessions. Instead, the Huskies stacked the line and forced us into a pair of third-and-longs that we did not convert, gifting them great field position, thus putting our defense in a tight spot too. Coach Shanahan and I talked extensively this week and we both agreed: going forward we're going to play our game regardless of the score. If that means we get into "unsportsmanlike' territory, so be it. We aren't going to get caught flat-footed again."

MW: "Transitioning to the defense with the final question, Brian Pennel sliced up the secondary in the 4th quarter. What adjustments do you plan to make to ensure that doesn't happen again?"

AL: "We have to get home, period. This system is predicated on generating consistent pressure and as soon as that stops, it puts our secondary in a rough spot on islands. We're going to move some things around to try and generate pressure, disguise some coverages to confuse the quarterback, but at the end of the day we have to hit the quarterback, period."

Rivalry games are always tricky, but I'll open with this statistic. Since Coach Leon has become a coordinator at the collegiate level, he's only lost back-to-back games once—with the Montana State Bobcats. Never lost back-to-back with Oregon State and I don't expect that trend to change.

As I said in the opener, Rutgers has talent. We have more. Unless Ajani Sheppard does his best Cam Newton impersonation, the Terps get back on track in this one.

Maryland 35, Rutgers 14. #FearTheTurtle.

We already know that this is a win. Anything less than that 3-score margin should be shamed.

Terps Get Back On Track With Gritty Rivalry Win
Marcus Washington // TerpsvillePublished: October 7th, 2028

The Maryland Terrapins got back in the winning column following a 30-20 victory that was every bit the slugfest you'd expect from a 100-year-old rivalry.

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights laid down the gauntlet to open the game with a 17 play, 82-yard drive that culminated on a 4th-and-goal from the 1 touchdown run by Cole Bruan, the only carry of the afternoon for the junior. Not only did the drive span 17 plays, but it ate all but the final two minutes from the 1st-quarter clock.

When the Maryland Terrapins kicked a 39-yard field goal to finish their opening drive of the game, a 13-play jaunt, the game was already in the second quarter.

The Terrapins would slowly ease ahead of the Knights with a bend-but-don't-break defensive attack and an offense that moved the ball, but struggled as the field shrunk. A last-second 31-yard field goal by Donald Byler gave the Terps a slim 13-7 lead into the break.

Midway through the 3rd quarter Malik Washington finally got the Terps rolling with a 46-yard bomb to 6'7" tight end JT Taggart, who simply boxed out the Rutgers defender before trotting into the end zone as the SECU Stadium crowd erupted.

It felt like the Terps were poised to begin pulling away in a game many thought would be an easy victory, but the Knights had other plans for their rival. HB Alex Karim burst through the middle on a HB Draw, bouncing off safety La'khi Roland on his way to an 81-yard run that put an unsettling hush over the SECU crowd.

As Washington and the Terps struggled to generate offense after the sudden surge by Rutgers, they slowly chipped away at the lead with Melvin Fry turning it into a three-point game midway through the 4th after his 14-yard touchdown grab.

The Rutgers offense would get two more opportunities with the score sitting at 23-20, but a quick three-and-out was followed by a lone first down as they struggled to find room to maneuver against the Terps' suffocating defense. Facing 4th-and-5 with 2:31 remaining, the Knights opted to punt, banking on the lackluster offense by the Terrapins to give them one more opportunity.

Instead, the Terps put together a final, game-clinching drive. Washington converted two third downs, but the deciding moment came on 4th-and-2 from the Rutgers 31. The Terps were well within range for another field goal by Donald Byler, but would still give the Scarlet Knights an opportunity to win the game with a quick touchdown strike.

Head coach Armando Leon decided to try and end the game right then and there, putting the ball in Malik Washington's hands. The senior quarterback seemed poised to escape the pocket, despite the Rutgers spy lying in wait, but at the last second Za'Ron Collins wiggled free from his coverage. Washington spotted him, lofted the pass, and Collins secured it before dashing 10 more yards for the 14-yard gain that secured the win.

With the Knights using their final timeouts to kill the clock, the Terps were unable to kneel out the win, leading to reserve HB Antoine Avant to slice in from 7 yards out for the final salvo in the rivalry win.

During the post-game press conference, Coach Leon praised Washington's leadership and his team's grit despite multiple injuries.

Question One - Aisha Thompson (Terp Magazine): "Walk us through that 4th-down call at the end, coach. What level of confidence did you have in your team to either convert, or your defense to hold one final time, or was it simply an analytics-based decision?"

Armando Leon: "It's not analytics to do the math and see a field goal doesn't do us any favors. Does it take away a long, fluke field goal? Sure, but they can still win with a score. We were excited for Malik to come back this year and it would be foolhardy not to put the ball in his hands with the game on the line. He's our best player and when push comes to shove, winning players make winning plays."

Question Two - Ryan Parker (Big Ten Network): "Your defense looked gassed by the fourth quarter after defending the Scarlet Knights no-huddle offense all day. Did that change your game plan in the second half and do you think it played a role in that long touchdown by Alex Karim that seemed to spark the Knights?"

Armando Leon: "Absolutely, Ryan. We knew going into it that Rutgers likes to run the no-huddle and with the number of athletes they have out wide, it's like covering Steph Curry up and down the field. We prepared for it, but it's still something that is going to get you catching your breath on the field. We tried to keep guys rotated, keep 'em fresh. But I definitely saw the defense a step slow on Karim's touchdown and on the next touchdown drive. But credit to them, final two drives of the game for Rutgers and they forced the punt both times. That doesn't show up in the box score, but it decided the game."

Question Three - Phil Ritter (The Daily Targum): "Your receiving group had 7 drops in this game, including a number on third down in the later stages that could have slowed the momentum of the Scarlet Knights. Do you credit those miscues to the physicality of a rivalry game, the Knights' defense just wearing those guys down, or simply your guys getting ahead of themselves and looking to make a play, before they had the ball secured?"

Armando Leon: "You can't undersell the physicality of this game. We don't like each other and if that was a question going into this contest, it certainly wasn't at the end. I think the number of guys who left this game with injuries, all minor on our side for those wondering, tells that story. But at the same time, we need those guys to step up. Malik needs those guys to step up. We did that on the final drive, especially Za'Ron with a clutch reception on 4th-down, but we'd like to not be in nail-biters every week."

I'm not one to lambast a win, but this should have been a refreshing walk in the park for Maryland, rivalry or not. Instead, it became another knock-down, drag-out game that we had to outmaneuver our way out of. The defense continues to struggle getting home, only recording two sacks again, and at some point you have to wonder when Coach Leon is going to move some pieces around to see if they can get some consistent push at the point of attack.

Offensively, without Zymear Smith it looks too often that the plan is to let Malik simply make a play. And because of that, he's bailing on his reads early and looking to run. He's had 12 or more carries in each of the last two games. That isn't a formula that is going to win games against superior opponents. It is however, a formula that is going to ensure Malik doesn't finish his senior season.

We got the win, but there may be more questions than answers as we prepare for a trip to Pasadena and the UCLA Bruins.

2028 Week Seven Preview: Maryland Terrapins (4-1) @ #18 UCLA Bruins (3-2)
Marcus Washington // TerpsvillePublished: October 13th, 2028

For only the second time this season, the Maryland Terrapins are hitting the road. But similar to the other road trip, they're gearing up to face an AP-ranked opponent as they'll prepare for a Big Ten Conference clash with the 18th-ranked UCLA Bruins.

The UCLA Bruins are ranked 18th despite a pair of losses already on their ledger, but when you look at who they lost to it brings it all into perspective. Both Cal (23rd) and Ohio State (8th) are ranked programs and as an added wrinkle, the Bruins dominated the Washington Huskies 48-18 in Seattle, one week before those same puppies outmuscled the Terrapins at SECU Stadium.

On the latest edition of "Inside the Shell" Coach Leon will address the challenges of traveling to the West Coast, defensive adjustments, and the peculiar case of Malik Washington.

Inside the Shell

MW: "West Coast trip on deck, Coach. How does the team stay fresh and locked in with such a significant distance to travel?"

AL: "Just preparation, Marcus. We leave earlier for West Coast trips to make sure we're in town with enough time to get some practice in, get settled, get acclimated. All the little things that we need to do to make sure we're locked in. Give the guys some playbook work just to keep things fresh. Doing these big West Coast trips is hard, but you won't catch us complaining. There are a lot of other sports caught in the crossfire of the new norm in college sports than just us."

MW: "We're nearly halfway into your first full season as head coach while calling the defensive plays as well, and the sacks have yet to catch up to your gaudy standards. Have you guys kind of accepted that isn't going to be your identity this year, or are you actively trying to get after it still?"

AL: "Generating pressure has always been my calling card, so we're definitely still trying to get active, Marcus. I don't think the sack numbers tell the whole story, getting pressures and QB hits is part of the equation too, but forcing them into 2nd, 3rd-and-long is definitely the ultimate goal. We're working on mixing some pieces up, having Garrison slide inside more to give us more of a presence up the middle. But, rest assured Terrapin Nation, we're never going to sit back and accept being less than our standard."

MW: "Last question, Coach. Malik Washington has yet to commit a turnover so far this season, despite 151 passing attempts and 49 carries. On one hand, you laud and praise the young man for taking care of the most precious commodity in the game, the football. Others are quick to call him a "mesh merchant" who is scared to push the ball down field. What say you to those concerns and more importantly, are they valid?"

AL: "Let's look at the stats. Our offense is ranked in the upper 50 in both points and yardage per game as an offense. Malik is completing 62% of his passes and averaging 7.8 yards per attempt. He has 1,439 total yards without a turnover on the season. Most importantly, we're 4-1. I guess I'm not sure what the complaint is. If you want to say he doesn't push the ball downfield, then what do they say about his 48-yard touchdown to JT last week? He put it in a spot for his receiver to make a play; that's a 50/50 ball if you don't trust your dude. So, to answer your question: No, they are not valid concerns. Malik is playing within the offense, taking care of the ball, and moving the chains. End of story."

I hear Coach on the criticism of Malik, I really do. But I think there is some truth to the detractors' points. You aren't seeing him look to push the ball downfield as much as find guys with the opportunity to keep moving downfield. And I'm not saying it's the wrong formula.

But when you're relying on the quick game, on guys winning one-on-one in space, you're going to get what the Terps have experienced the last few games. Loaded boxes, teams willing to jump the quick pass and risk getting beat over the top. 'Cause right now, they don't think it's coming.

Losing Zymear hurts, he was a guy who was going to win in space 99.9% of the time. You can't expect that out of anyone more than Emanuel Ross, whose sudden issue with drops is a problem in and of itself.

UCLA has talent, they have motivation, and they have home field.

But we've got Leon. And for now, that's good enough for me. We'd like to see more, don't get me wrong. But, right now it's hard to bet against Coach Armando Leon.

Maryland 28, UCLA 24.

That early season upset is going to look like a fluke if you do not start improving. These look like teams you should be handling with ease.
