2028 Week Eleven Preview: Delaware (5-4) @ #15 Maryland (7-2)
Marcus Washington // TerpsvillePublished: November 10th, 2028

As we enter the home stretch of the 2028 season, the stakes couldn't be higher for the suddenly surging Terrapins. They're favored in each of their final three games of the season, beginning with this tilt against the Delaware Blue Hens, and with their 15th overall ranking, puts them firmly in contention to seize a spot in the College Football Playoff. With that, however, comes expectations, something very few of the current Terrapins have experienced this late in the season.

After we get past the stat graphic, we'll catch up with Coach Leon in our latest "Inside the Shell" about tempering expectations within the building and playing within themselves, among other topics.

Inside the Shell

MW: "Maryland sits at 15th in the College Football Playoff poll with three games remaining. It seems unlikely that the Terrapins are going to be able to secure a spot in the Big Ten Championship Game, with a number of teams ahead of them including the undefeated Oregon Ducks and one-loss Trojans. However, if the Terps win out, it's not outside the realm of possibility for them to have a high enough rank by then to secure one of the at-large bids. Is that something the team is talking about and if so, how do you temper those expectations to avoid a trap game?"

AL: "In today's day and age, it's impossible for the guys not to know where we're at in regard to the Playoff. The best thing we can do is acknowledge it, while putting the proper perspective on it. Is that an attainable goal? Absolutely. And it's one we're striving for. But in order to get there, we have to continue to execute like we have all season. Keep our heads down, nose to the grindstone, and make sure we're doing all of the prep work throughout the week that is going to pay off on Saturdays."

MW: "The defense got gashed at times by Jahlil Hageman; what adjustments are you making defensively to make sure that trend doesn't continue?"

AL: "Focusing on fundamentals, Marcus. We can't load up for a highlight-reel type hit and not expect the ballcarrier to react. They can see that coming and the good ones—which Jahlil is—are going to see that from a mile away. We have got to be disciplined, wrap up, stay sound and look for opportunities to force some turnovers with big hits. But we can't spend the entire game hunting big hits and be surprised when he skirts them."

MW: "Some have publicly questioned your statement after the Indiana game where you deflected a question about bad blood between you and former Terrapin Head Coach Mike Locksley. Care to elaborate on that relationship, or are you sticking by your comments?"

AL: "Listen, my main concern was not taking the shine away from my team. That win meant a lot to them, especially guys like Malik and Garrison. I didn't want to make the coverage of the game about me. But now that we're past that, I have no problem addressing it. Mike and I have never directly spoken more than offhand comments on his part. He had the opportunity to back up that talk on the field; he didn't do it. If he wants to keep pressing the issue, he knows where to find me. In his old office, winning with his guys, while he ran away to Indiana to lose."

•••

I don't want to get too ahead of ourselves, but with the final three games on the Terrapins' schedule we should be forcing some uncomfortable decisions at the CFP committee shortly. Because if we win out, we're square in the middle of one of the at-large bids.

To be having these kinds of discussions in Coach Leon's 1st year is far and away greatly exceeding any expectations even the most stalwart Terrapins fan had this season.

Before we get there, however, we need to take care of business to finish the season. Otherwise all of this hyperbole turns into just talk.

If we do slip up this year, it isn't this week. 45 Maryland, 10 Delaware.

Delaware Leaves The Fight At Home In Blowout
Marcus Washington // TerpsvillePublished: November 11th, 2028

I said in my pre-game presser that if the Maryland Terrapins were to drop a game in the home stretch, it would not be to the Delaware Fighting Blue Hens. Not to say I told you so, but the Terrapins nearly shut out the Blue Hens in an eventual 52-7 BBQ at SECU Stadium. The lone Delaware touchdown? A last-minute heave with no time on the clock that caught the Terps' defense by surprise.

Despite the lopsided score, the Terrapins were only up 21-0 at the half, but three second-half interceptions helped to spark the eventual beatdown. Freshman halfback Paul Colon was the star for the Terps, churning out 150 yards and four touchdowns on the day while Iverson Howard chipped in another 60, Malik Washington quietly threw for 232 of his own yards, and the defense registered five sacks and the three takeaways.

After the game, Coach Leon praised his team's singular focus on winning and letting the rest take care of itself.

•••

Question One - Aisha Thompson (Terp Magazine): "After an emotional game last week against Mike Locksley, the Terrapins took the field against Delaware with a calmer, more patient approach. Was that by design with all of the talk surrounding not only your comments about Locksley, but also the Terrapins' outside shot at crashing the Playoff?"

Armando Leon: "It was by design, Aisha, but for neither of those reasons. We're doing our best to block out the noise, on both subjects, and just play football. We didn't want to come out like we did against Indiana with our hair on fire and back ourselves into a few mistakes. We took what the Hens gave us, leaned on our playmakers, and what you saw is the result. That's what happens when we execute without an agenda."

Question Two - Benjamin Polluck (The Review): "While both Iverson Howard and Paul Colon have shared carries since Zymear Smith went down earlier this year, Colon got the majority of the carries today and the freshman put up a helluva stat line. Was there a concerted effort to get him more plays?"

Armando Leon: "Not any more than usual, Benjamin. We love what Colon has brought to the team behind Iverson's shiftiness and he's been a valuable contributor since Zymear went down. Iverson was a little banged up early and Paul was hot, so we rode the hot hand. That isn't to say he isn't going to keep getting this many looks, it's just a fluid situation. We like to get them both rotated in regularly, but if there is one guy just feeling himself; it's like a heat-check in basketball, you gotta let 'em fly."

Question Three - Ryan Parker (Big Ten Network): "Malik Washington set a new Big Ten record in passing yards for a career in the contest. What does that say about not only his longevity, but his loyalty to stay at Maryland all four seasons?"

Armando Leon: "I think it speaks volumes about not only his ability, but his character. He knows his value, we talked about it when I was hired and after he agreed to return, he could have gotten a lot of money from any of the premier programs. But loyalty meant something to him; finishing what he started. And I think that as he prepares for the next step in his career as a football player, NFL organizations should take note. This is a guy that's going to step in from day 1 and work hard, grind, and try to contribute in any way. He doesn't run from problems; he embraces them. And getting the Big Ten record is evidence of that. Hopefully, we can get him some more hardware before his final game in a Maryland uniform."

•••

In a sport that has been redefined by the transfer portal in the last five years, a player of Malik's caliber staying for his entire collegiate career is a rarity. And one that should be applauded. Every year we heard the questions: "Is this the year he's had enough?" and every year, he's stayed true to his character.

He's eleven touchdowns away from JT Barrett's record of 104 with Ohio State and for his sake, I hope he gets it. Maybe it will inspire more athletes to stay with a program and build a legacy worthy of the record books.

For now, however, we continue to move Fearlessly Forward behind Coach Leon and an inspired Maryland Terrapins squad.

I have to win and then get some help. I detail it a bit in the upcoming preview but we're #4 behind Oregon who is undefeated in conference play, then Penn State with two losses, then Ohio State with two losses, then us with two losses. Ohio State has the tie breaker on us, so we need Ohio State to lose one more, us win out, and then hope for a Penn State loss as well. Oregon already beat Penn State, so I believe that even if they lost their final two conference games they'd still be in. So basically, if Ohio State doesn't lose we don't get it, and if they lose we still need a Penn State loss as well.

We've got Minnesota (5-5) and Michigan State (6-4) left - both games we should win

2028 Week Twelve Preview: #11 Maryland (8-2) @ Minnesota (5-5)
Marcus Washington // TerpsvillePublished: November 17th, 2028

Five weeks ago, the Minnesota Golden Gophers opened Big Ten conference play with a 28-14 victory over Nebraska, elevating them to 5-0 and a 22nd-ranking in the AP Poll. Since then, the Gophers ran into a brick wall, dropping five straight conference contests and now enter a Week Twelve showdown with the surging Terrapins desperate to salvage their season and make at least a bowl game.

The Terrapins, on the other hand, are rolling. Following a loss to Ohio State that many felt would keep them from cracking the AP Poll in any meaningful way this season, they've rattled off three straight wins by an average margin of 35 points and now find themselves not only in the thick of the Playoff race, but also with an outside shot at a Big Ten berth.

After we see how our Terrapins stack up against the Gophers, we'll get to the latest edition of "Inside the Shell" to get Coach Leon's thoughts about the potential Big Ten Championship, playoffs, and more.

Inside the Shell

MW: "We're going to get straight into it today, Coach Leon. With USC's loss to Penn State last week, the Maryland Terrapins are suddenly in the thick of the Big Ten conference race right behind Ohio State, Penn State, and Oregon. How exciting is that for the program, and how do you manage the team's expectations going forward?"

Armando Leon: "Honestly, it just makes our two losses sting that much more, Marcus. If we beat Washington, or even better Ohio State, then we're not in the thick of it, we're leading it. #2, right there behind Oregon. And that's the reminder the team needs; every game matters. It can be against Ohio State, or Miami of Ohio. They all matter in the grand scheme of things. We need to lock in with that same intensity to finish the season to keep our name in contention in both races, so that's how you manage the expectations. By putting them in perspective."

MW: "Obviously, this is Malik Washington's last year with the Terrapins as a four-year starter. He's within striking distance of the Big Ten career touchdown pass record, having already secured the passing yards record. Is there going to be a conscious effort on your part, or Coach Shanahan, to get him that record in the final games?"

AL: "With bowl games now counting towards totals, that's at least three games to get 11 touchdowns. He already had a six-touchdown game this year—against Towson, I know—so it's not outside the realm of possibility. But we're not going to throw out the game plan just to chase a record, because that puts our bigger goals at risk. That being said, senior night against Michigan State? Bring some popcorn."

MW: "You made waves earlier this season by not pulling your starters against Northwestern, a move you credited to finally finding a groove as a defense. You did pull your starters in the fourth quarter against Delaware and we saw true freshman Jerry Stoddard in, instead of junior Tobias Hester. Can we expect the same if either of the final two contests are blowouts?"

AL: "That was more about wanting to see what Jerry could do, than a slight on Tobias. We've got tape on Tobias; he started at Tulsa the last two seasons. We have nothing but high school tape on Jerry, so we wanted to get him on the field, get him reps, and see what we have knowing that no matter what, we're going to have a new starting QB next season. I'd expect the same in the final two games; we've got to start getting some of the younger guys game reps so we can begin the evaluation process for next season with a ton of talent departing at graduation this year."

Until I hear the Maryland Terrapins announced by the selection committee, I'm not going to accept that it is a possibility. There is too much that can go wrong, outside of just losing a game, over the final two weeks to get ahead of ourselves. But we're in the thick of it and after back-to-back 6-win seasons, it's about damn time.

Whether or not we make the Big Ten Championship or the Playoff won't be decided in this contest. Minnesota is reeling, the Terrapins are rolling, and I predict another game that the backups play the 4th quarter.

42 Maryland, Minnesota 10.
