Sooners Prove How Tough They Are With Masterful Performance In Autzen
Boone Tillman // Sooner Born • Published: September 8th, 2029
Coach Leon and the Oklahoma Sooners proved they've got the fire to back up all the smoke they were talking after storming Autzen Stadium and thrashing the Oregon Ducks with a 52-14 victory to send the suddenly free-falling Ducks to 0-2. And at the center of it all? The swarming defense orchestrated by none other than Armando Leon, outperforming the man that many Sooners fans—including myself, for the record—thought was the Sooners' savior in Dan Lanning. I know it's early in the evaluation process, but it's hard to say we didn't get the right man for the job after the absolute vulgar display of power we saw on the field today.
It had the chance to completely unravel, however. The Oklahoma Sooners were up 14-0 when things started to get hairy. First, Oscar Robledo went down with an ankle injury. Then Cole Welliver came up clutching his knee after a 3rd-down incompletion. Finally, Dermarcius Davis and the Oregon Ducks showed life, marching 85 yards to finally get on the board and narrow the lead to 14-7 with just under two minutes before the half.
Cole Welliver returned and found Darren Lyles on a crossing route that turned into a 41-yard lightning strike to put the Sooners up 21-7 going into the half. Then, Oklahoma executed the double-dip to perfection with a precise 11-play, 72-yard drive to open the second half with an 8-yard touchdown run by Isaac Adcock, and just like that any momentum Oregon had stolen before the half had evaporated.
The Sooners got after Dermarcius Davis in the first half, tallying 3 sacks, but turned up the pocket into a pressure cooker in the 2nd half as they tallied five more sacks, an interception, and a forced fumble on backup QB Pat Maijeh in the 4th quarter that was returned for the final touchdown in the blowout.
When the dust settled and with Autzen Stadium once again silent as a graveyard, Coach Leon took the podium to remind the nation that despite all the talk, Oklahoma is really about their business this year.

Question One - Jennifer Canard (Daily Emerald): "Coach Leon, it looked like Dermacius Davis and the Ducks offense were finally finding their groove at the end of the half. What adjustments did you make at the half to make sure that momentum didn't carry into the second half?"
Armando Leon: "A lot of the credit goes to our own offense, Jennifer. If they don't execute flawlessly at the end of the half, then again to start the 2nd-half, this game looks a lot different. It's hard not to feel discouraged when you leave the field trailing 14-7, to suddenly be down 28-7 when you retake it after the half. We as a defense did a great job sticking to our game plan, keeping Davis in the pocket and making him hold the ball too long. With the amount of sacks we got, even the big plays were paltry because they were so far behind the sticks."
Question Two - James McDavid (OU Daily): "Coach Leon, after losing to Dan Lanning and Oregon in the Rose Bowl last season, then listening to all of the pointed criticism this offseason, how great does this win feel? Especially after thoroughly dominating Oregon at that."
Armando Leon: "The coach in me says that it's just another game, number two out of twelve in the regular season. Our guys prepared to win and that's the result you saw on the field, a team that was ready and determined. But the competitor in me? Loves every minute of it. My drive, ambition, and loyalty have been questioned and ridiculed for the past nine months, so to finally prove what I knew about myself, and this team, is definitely cathartic. And credit to the guys, they all knew what the talk would be if we dropped this game and made sure they put their best foot forward."
Question Three - Angus Summerall (SEC Network): "Coach, Karlos Vigil made waves by not only not declaring for the NFL Draft—despite being projected as a mid-round pick—but also, not testing the transfer portal. What can you say about the impact he's had on this defense early on?"
Armando Leon: "There's a lot of moving pieces for our defense and a number of guys who make things happen, but I don't think it's hyperbole when I say Vigil is the man in the middle of it all. Did you see him out there today? He had at least four plays where he had his blocker on their back before Dermarcius Davis had corralled the snap. At one point, on a play action pass, he pummeled the center, then the halfback, then tag-teamed Davis for the sack. That's the definition of a game wrecker. I have the confidence to say I think our defense would still be fearsome without him, but it is damn sure easier when you've got a guy like that in the middle."

Point blank, Coach Leon put his money where his mouth was before this contest and came up ACES. He grabbed the bull by the horns, leaned into the narrative, and showed why he deserves to be a head coach in the SEC. He didn't just beat Lanning, he embarrassed him—for the second time I might add.
There is plenty of football left to play in the 2029 season, but it's hard to imagine this season could have started any more perfect for the boys in Crimson and Cream.
We came, we saw, and we conquered. And for today at least, the Sooners ended up with the best man in the country leading the charge.
