Sooners Prove How Tough They Are With Masterful Performance In Autzen
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: September 8th, 2029

Coach Leon and the Oklahoma Sooners proved they've got the fire to back up all the smoke they were talking after storming Autzen Stadium and thrashing the Oregon Ducks with a 52-14 victory to send the suddenly free-falling Ducks to 0-2. And at the center of it all? The swarming defense orchestrated by none other than Armando Leon, outperforming the man that many Sooners fans—including myself, for the record—thought was the Sooners' savior in Dan Lanning. I know it's early in the evaluation process, but it's hard to say we didn't get the right man for the job after the absolute vulgar display of power we saw on the field today.

It had the chance to completely unravel, however. The Oklahoma Sooners were up 14-0 when things started to get hairy. First, Oscar Robledo went down with an ankle injury. Then Cole Welliver came up clutching his knee after a 3rd-down incompletion. Finally, Dermarcius Davis and the Oregon Ducks showed life, marching 85 yards to finally get on the board and narrow the lead to 14-7 with just under two minutes before the half.

Cole Welliver returned and found Darren Lyles on a crossing route that turned into a 41-yard lightning strike to put the Sooners up 21-7 going into the half. Then, Oklahoma executed the double-dip to perfection with a precise 11-play, 72-yard drive to open the second half with an 8-yard touchdown run by Isaac Adcock, and just like that any momentum Oregon had stolen before the half had evaporated.

The Sooners got after Dermarcius Davis in the first half, tallying 3 sacks, but turned up the pocket into a pressure cooker in the 2nd half as they tallied five more sacks, an interception, and a forced fumble on backup QB Pat Maijeh in the 4th quarter that was returned for the final touchdown in the blowout.

When the dust settled and with Autzen Stadium once again silent as a graveyard, Coach Leon took the podium to remind the nation that despite all the talk, Oklahoma is really about their business this year.

Question One - Jennifer Canard (Daily Emerald): "Coach Leon, it looked like Dermacius Davis and the Ducks offense were finally finding their groove at the end of the half. What adjustments did you make at the half to make sure that momentum didn't carry into the second half?"

Armando Leon: "A lot of the credit goes to our own offense, Jennifer. If they don't execute flawlessly at the end of the half, then again to start the 2nd-half, this game looks a lot different. It's hard not to feel discouraged when you leave the field trailing 14-7, to suddenly be down 28-7 when you retake it after the half. We as a defense did a great job sticking to our game plan, keeping Davis in the pocket and making him hold the ball too long. With the amount of sacks we got, even the big plays were paltry because they were so far behind the sticks."

Question Two - James McDavid (OU Daily): "Coach Leon, after losing to Dan Lanning and Oregon in the Rose Bowl last season, then listening to all of the pointed criticism this offseason, how great does this win feel? Especially after thoroughly dominating Oregon at that."

Armando Leon: "The coach in me says that it's just another game, number two out of twelve in the regular season. Our guys prepared to win and that's the result you saw on the field, a team that was ready and determined. But the competitor in me? Loves every minute of it. My drive, ambition, and loyalty have been questioned and ridiculed for the past nine months, so to finally prove what I knew about myself, and this team, is definitely cathartic. And credit to the guys, they all knew what the talk would be if we dropped this game and made sure they put their best foot forward."

Question Three - Angus Summerall (SEC Network): "Coach, Karlos Vigil made waves by not only not declaring for the NFL Draft—despite being projected as a mid-round pick—but also, not testing the transfer portal. What can you say about the impact he's had on this defense early on?"

Armando Leon: "There's a lot of moving pieces for our defense and a number of guys who make things happen, but I don't think it's hyperbole when I say Vigil is the man in the middle of it all. Did you see him out there today? He had at least four plays where he had his blocker on their back before Dermarcius Davis had corralled the snap. At one point, on a play action pass, he pummeled the center, then the halfback, then tag-teamed Davis for the sack. That's the definition of a game wrecker. I have the confidence to say I think our defense would still be fearsome without him, but it is damn sure easier when you've got a guy like that in the middle."

•••

Point blank, Coach Leon put his money where his mouth was before this contest and came up ACES. He grabbed the bull by the horns, leaned into the narrative, and showed why he deserves to be a head coach in the SEC. He didn't just beat Lanning, he embarrassed him—for the second time I might add.

There is plenty of football left to play in the 2029 season, but it's hard to imagine this season could have started any more perfect for the boys in Crimson and Cream.

We came, we saw, and we conquered. And for today at least, the Sooners ended up with the best man in the country leading the charge.

2029 Week Three Preview - Oklahoma (2-0) @ Vanderbilt (1-1)
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: September 14th, 2029

The Oklahoma Sooners will look to keep the momentum rolling as they stay on the road in Week Three with a trip to Nashville, Tennessee to face the 1-1 Vanderbilt Commodores.

The Sooners have roared out of the gate, outscoring opponents 97-17 over the first two games, including an absolute slaughter of the Ducks in Autzen last week, but health and the potential for an emotional letdown following a big win are the key concerns going into their SEC conference opener. We'll discuss all of that, and more, with Coach Leon on the other side of the stats in the latest "Schooner Scoop!"

Schooner Scoop

BT: "First things first, Coach. How is that ankle of Oscar and the knee for Cole? 'Cause I hate to say it, things suddenly take a turn for the worse without either of those two lining up on Saturday."

AL: "Oscar is a big part of our game plan for a reason, he's a one-man wrecking crew. But we've got talent around him too. Butch churned out 100 yards in Oscar's absence and Isaac has put a touchdown on the board in both of our opening contests. So, if he is banged up, we've got faith in the depth we have behind him. That being said, the training staff told me he's 100% full go and he's going to see the bulk of the carries. Cole came back into the game last week and while he's been dealing with swelling, he assured me that he's played through worse."

BT: "Following an emotional win like you had in Eugene last week, what's the worry like inside the facility that there is going to be a major letdown this weekend? This team wouldn't be the first group of guys to get caught lacking on the road after an emotional win. What are you and the staff doing to try and mitigate that?"

AL: "It's natural to feel a bit of a de-escalation after a win of that magnitude, but I think the way we prepare each and every week kind of shields us from that. We prepare one week at a time, train one week at a time, and ultimately execute one week at a time. After film study to start the week, last week is done and forgotten. We find what we can learn from, then we start applying it as we look forward to the future. We aren't going to be caught with our pants down, Boone, I can promise you that."

BT: "Last question, how tough is it to prepare for four straight road games this early in the season, and this early into your Sooner career?"

AL: "You'd always like to get the road games broken up a bit more than we're experiencing this season, but you take what you're given. Just means the back half of the schedule will be in front of home crowds. The most difficult part is not having a familiarity with each other, where you can communicate with hand and head motions rather than words. But we are getting extra reps whenever we can, abiding by NCAA bylaws of course, to make sure every key member of the offense and defense are on the same page so the crowd noise isn't an issue. Of course, if we can stun a few more crowds like we did in Autzen, it won't be an issue either way."

•••

I'll come right out and say it, folks. This has trap game written all over it. By no means should Vanderbilt be able to hold their own with the Sooners, but given the circumstances, I could see a dogfight in this one.

Coach Leon will have these boys ready come kickoff, that I believe, but then it's all on the team to execute on the field. We have a senior group led by Cole Welliver and Karlos Vigil and that should help keep the younger corps steady until they absorb the first punch from the Commodores. We've simply got too much talent on both sides of the ball to get punked by Vanderbilt.

By no means do I think we go undefeated this season, but the first loss isn't coming now. I refuse to believe that.

Oklahoma 45, Vanderbilt 10.

Oklahoma Withstands Early Vanderbilt Flurry, Runs Away With Lopsided Victory
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: September 15th, 2029

The Oklahoma Sooners didn't play a perfect game by any means, but they did what great teams do. They weathered the storm, bided their time, and struck at the opportune moment. And that is why they're walking out of Nashville with a 56-21 shellacking of the Vanderbilt Commodores, despite being tied at 14 midway through the 2nd quarter.

The game started off with explosives on both sides, to say the least. Isaac Adcock showed off his playmaking ability, taking the opening kickoff 100 yards and ensuring that despite Vanderbilt's best efforts, the Sooners never trailed. Vanderbilt wasted little time evening the score, however, getting ballsy on the first drive of the game. Facing 4th-and-1 from their own 20, Vandy coach Lance Taylor bet the house on the opening spin.

He hit 00 as Desmond Snead connected with Walt Jennings on a 64-yard post to flip the field before athletic tight end Cameron Roberts hauled in the first of three touchdowns in the contest. After stalled drives on both sides, with Oklahoma punting before Vanderbilt missed a 54-yard field goal, the clock turned to the second quarter, which quickly became known as the 'Robledo Show.'

Oscar Robledo wasted little time making his mark in what would be the pivotal 2nd quarter, slashing in for a 1-yard touchdown after hurdling MLB Maurice Oladokun. A 15-yard roughing the passer on Karlos Vigil, who was itching for his 3rd sack already in the contest, prolonged the next Commodores drive that ended with an athletic catch-and-run by Roberts. Oscar Robledo would turn in two more touchdowns on the next two Oklahoma possessions as the Commodores finally hit a road bump, but the deciding factor would come after Oklahoma took a 28-14 lead.

With under two minutes remaining, Desmond Snead knew he needed to make a play to keep the Vanderbilt momentum going into the half. Instead, he did the one thing the Commodores could ill-afford: throw an interception.

DeMarco Slayton out-leapt Kayleb Barnett on an overthrown curl route, Oscar Robledo hauled in his 4th touchdown of the quarter, and the Sooners took a commanding 35-14 lead into the half.

Three plays into the second half, Snead officially gave away the game, tossing his 2nd interception to Richard Trainer. Oklahoma would add two more touchdowns in the 3rd, while Roberts scored his 3rd of the game for Vanderbilt, but a third interception officially killed any hopes of a comeback for the Commodores, as Ja'Darius Pleasant returned the gift for a touchdown to seal the 56-21 victory.

Question One - Jay Vilma (The Vanderbilt Hustler): "Coach Leon, despite the lopsided final score it looked like tight end Cameron Roberts gave your defense some trouble all game. What about him makes it difficult to contain him for a full sixty minutes?"

Armando Leon: "He's a gifted athlete who uses his size and speed well, leverages defenders who are usually either smaller or slower into disadvantageous positions, and punishes them for it. Before I forget though, did you see that catch in the end zone for his third touchdown? You can't even be mad at that as a coach; Ralph did what he was supposed to do, knock down the jump ball. Cam just made a heads-up play to grab the deflection and get his knees down. I'm glad we only have to face him once a year, 'cause he is a real matchup nightmare."

Question Two - James McDavid (OU Daily): "I don't think anyone had the Vanderbilt Commodores putting up more points than the Oregon Ducks when the schedule was released this year. What do you attribute the Commodores' early success to and how did you finally get them to break serve?"

Armando Leon: "They played like a team that had nothing to lose and was backed into a corner. I don't care if it's a lion, or a squirrel, when an animal gets backed into a corner, it's dangerous. We did a great job as a team of absorbing those first few punches, staying patient, and striking when they let their guard down. Desmond was slinging it all over the field on us, but once he got too comfortable, he got sloppy. All it takes is an extra second, a pass just a little too high, and suddenly those completions are going the other way. Once that started happening, he was rattled, and we took full advantage."

Question Three - Karlos Cooley (102.5 The Game): "The health of Oscar Robledo was in question after missing much of the Oregon game. He had a huge game with nearly 200 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns, but was also in and out of the lineup as that ankle injury appeared to bother him at times. Is that something that is going to effect him year-long, or just something he has to work through?"

Armando Leon: "He had it heavily taped going into the game and the training staff fully cleared him, but from what he told me the tape was bothering him at times, especially when he did a jump cut. So he came out to re-wrap it a few times, give it a break, then went back out there. If it was a major concern, he would have gotten a longer rest. It's something we're going to continue to monitor, but we aren't overly worried at this point."

•••

What did I tell you, folks? This had trap game written all over it, but I felt like the talent for the Sooners was too much for the Commodores to handle. They gave it the ol' college try, but were slowly engulfed by the constant barrage of Oscar Robledo and the Sooners' pass rush, which collected another four sacks in the contest to go with 9 tackles for loss and the three noted interceptions.

The trap game is still out there, but at least for this week, the Sooners continued to show that they're built for the long haul.

back in ya Coastal Carolina bag
tbf I was slaughtering the shit teams with Maryland too, for the most part. The only game that surprised me so far was Oregon, but they've tend to be boom or bust whenever I play them.

2029 Week Four Preview - Oklahoma (3-0) @ Kentucky (3-0)
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: September 21st, 2029

The Sooners stay on the trail this week as they head to Lexington to face the surging Kentucky Wildcats, who moved to 3-0 on the season after a surprising win over the previously 7th-ranked Tennessee last week. The Sooners are riding their own three-game winning streak after outscoring opponents 153-38 so far this season and will look to remain undefeated in the SEC with another statement win.

After the graphic we'll get to the next "Schooner Scoop" where Coach Leon talks about the challenges of consecutive road games, the explosive Wildcats offense, and how the recruiting class is shaping up.

Schooner Scoop

BT: "Coach Leon, the Sooners are playing in their third straight road game with one more still on the docket next week, how does that affect a team this early in the season and what unique challenges does it present?"

AL: "I've said it before, you'd love to get the schedule more broken up. Not only from a recruiting standpoint, but just for comfort as well. It's not easy being away from home and your creature comforts multiple weekends in a row while also being physically and mentally beat up. It definitely takes a toll on you regardless if you're a battle-tested senior, or a fresh-faced freshman. The benefit is that when we're really hurting and hitting the dog days of October and November, we're going to have the benefit of those home games and thus be better positioned later in the season. A bit of a hard times now for the payoff later type of situation."

BT: "Kentucky shocked a lot of folks last week with their 40-37 win over Tennessee. What did you see from Alex Kumar and the Wildcats offense that you're keying on this weekend?"

AL: "His name may be Kumar, but he definitely isn't a White Castle connoisseur, Boone. Alex Kumar has some giddy-up in his step, so really the game plan is going to be similar to how we played Dermarcius Davis, who is one of the most athletically gifted quarterbacks in the league. Keep him contained, confuse him on the back end with some disguised coverages, and hope that we can get home before a receiver wiggles free. I love the matchup of my secondary against their receivers; I think we have a huge advantage there, so just keeping Kumar from generating explosives on his own will be the key to victory."

BT: "You mentioned earlier this season that the high volume of early road games is going to hurt with recruiting, but from what I'm hearing you're already starting to get some visits lined up for Week 6 against Missouri. Can you elaborate on that at all?"

AL: "We've got at least four commits locked into watching us host the Missouri Tigers, Boone. All defensive. One of the decisions we made as a staff was to try and keep visits focused on one side of the ball to maximize the amount of exposure we can give the recruits. Rather than splitting time with different coordinators, or player-mentors, by focusing on specific areas each visit we can maximize the little bit of time we have. So, for Week 6 we've got a slew of defensive talent headlined by the second-overall prospect MLB Lorenzo Rozeboom."

I maintain my stance that at one point, the Sooners are going to run into a trap game that they can't handle. The Kentucky Wildcats have the makings of a team that could challenge the Sooners, but I think this is too early of a game for the trap game to really bite Oklahoma.

Kumar is the wild card, if he can shake free for some big plays early on, all bets are off, but after seeing Leon's defense corral Dermarcius Davis, I have faith he'll do the same with a lesser-talent in Kumar. Still, I think Kentucky keeps it close before Oklahoma eventually puts them away.

38 Oklahoma, 24 Kentucky.
