2029 Conference Championship Preview - #3 Oklahoma (11-1) Vs South Carolina (8-4)
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: December 8th, 2029

The Oklahoma Sooners are in the SEC Championship Game for the second time since joining the conference back in 2024 and only the 8-4 South Carolina Gamecocks stand in the way of Armando Leon and Co. from claiming the first SEC Championship for the Sooners, and their 51st Conference Championship as a program.

When we finish previewing how our third-ranked Sooners matchup against the Gamecocks, we'll get into a Championship edition of "Schooner Scoop" with Coach Leon as he talks about the plan to win the Sooners' first conference championship since 2020, among other things.

Schooner Scoop

BT: "Coach Leon, this year's Sooners team shares a lot of similarities with the last Sooner team to make the SEC Conference Championship back in 2026. That year's team was undefeated, as opposed to your one-loss version, but also boasted a confident defensive-minded head coach, one of the top-ranked defenses in the nation, a top-five scoring offense, and a projected Heisman winner on the roster. That team lost back-to-back games to close out the season, first to the Longhorns in the SEC Championship Game and then to Missouri in the first round. What does this club need to do to make sure the similarities between the two clubs end by your squad hoisting the first ever Sooners' SEC Championship?"

AL: "Execution, Boone, plain and simple. We've got the talent and we've got the scheme; the only thing that will hold us back is ourselves. We may be on a seven-game winning streak, but we aren't looking ahead. The Gamecocks have our full attention and until that clock strikes zero in Atlanta, we aren't going to let up."

BT: "There is a huge contrast between these two clubs on paper, Coach. This year's Sooners' squad has outscored their opponents by an average of 30 points per game this season. By contrast, the Gamecocks have outscored their opponents by a third of a point on average. That isn't a typo, less than five total points separate their scoring differential this season. What have you seen on tape that shows how the Gamecocks survived the SEC gauntlet despite less than overwhelming stats?"

AL: "The Gamecocks this season are kind of an enigma. They lose to UConn and a struggling Clemson squad, then outlast A&M and Texas. The biggest takeaway I've seen so far on tape is that they're scrappy and if the game is close, they find a way to win out. Offensively they are sound, if not explosive, but most importantly they don't turn the ball over. Since they aren't explosive, when they lose, they lose big. We intend to run it up early and often and force them into some uncomfortable decisions. Judging by this season, if we can do that, then we're hoisting the trophy, Boone."

BT: "Not to beat a dead horse, Coach, but the offense continues to be criticized for their over reliance on Oscar Robledo in all aspects of the offense as he currently leads the team in receiving in addition to leading the nation in rushing yards. What have the discussions been like internally about balancing his workload while also keeping the offense humming?"

AL: "I mean, it's easy to point at the numbers and think the entire offense is Oscar, but we've got three other receivers with over 500 yards and a fourth in Elijah Thomas that will eclipse that more than likely. It just means we're balanced outside of Oscar. But, believe me, if push came to shove we have no problem putting the ball in Cole's hands and letting him distribute. It's an easy narrative to cling to due to Oscar's productivity, but the offense itself knows it's more than one guy stirring the drink."

Listen, the South Carolina Gamecocks are in the SEC Championship Game for a reason, they executed. But at the same time, when you make the conference championship, especially in the SEC, you expect a heavyweight clash. You expect a team that instills fear in their opposition. Not to be crude, but the Gamecocks simply don't do that.

They had a weaker than most SEC schedule and the only non-conference game they won was against an FCS school. They were 2-4 against teams that were over .500 this season.

I don't think this one is going to be close, again, all due respect to South Carolina.

42 Oklahoma, 10 South Carolina.

It's time for the Sooners to take their place with the upper echelon of the SEC.

Gamecocks Can't Measure Up As Sooners Claim First SEC Championship
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: December 9th, 2029

It may have taken five years longer than we would have liked, but the Oklahoma Sooners can officially call themselves champions of the SEC after a dominant 49-9 victory over the South Carolina Gamecocks that left little doubt who was the best of the best in the SEC.

The fact that all nine of the Gamecocks' points came as a direct result of miscues on the part of the Sooners only reinforced the fact that as long as the Sooners executed, they were nearly unstoppable.

A Cole Welliver interception on the second drive of the game, one of only six incompletions in the contest for the senior quarterback, set up the Gamecocks to take an early lead on the first of three field goals by Greg Gibbs. Welliver would rebound from the interception and lead four straight touchdown drives, starting with a 12-yard swing pass to Oscar Robledo who hurdled the final Gamecock defender as he broke the plane to put the Sooners up for good.

Roughing the passer penalties by Karlos Vigil on back-to-back drives kept South Carolina rolling enough to get within striking distance, but the Gamecocks' offense was never able to fully break through and reach the end zone. With each field goal, the Sooners answered with a touchdown as they looked poised to take a 21-9 lead into the half.

Then, Robledo happened. With just 23 seconds remaining in the half after a quick three-and-out by the Gamecocks, Coach Armando Leon trusted Cole Welliver to be efficient with two timeouts to potentially get the Sooners within range of a long field goal to extend the lead going into the break. Welliver found Ja'Kayden Ferguson on a crossing route near midfield, but the senior receiver lost the ball thanks to a huge hit from DaMarcus Leach. The loose ball squirted around the field until none other than Oscar Robledo came racing in, scooping up the ball and thundering 57 yards for the improbable touchdown on the last play of the half.

The Gamecocks never recovered, watching the Sooners put up 21 more points in the second half as they struggled to keep their composure.

While Oscar Robledo will be the story of the game, and deservedly so after breaking the Oklahoma Sooners single-season rushing touchdown record while tallying 207 total yards and four touchdowns, Armando Leon ensured that Cole Welliver got his flowers in the postgame press conference after the senior threw for 399 yards and four touchdowns in the win.

Question One - Meg Semental (SEC Network): "Coach Leon, Oscar Robledo put up a Heisman-esque performance on the biggest stage of his career to help the Sooners capture their first SEC Championship. What can you say about the presumptive Heisman winner that hasn't already been said?"

Armando Leon: "Oscar is amazing, period. He was out there hurdling guys, running routes like a receiver, even turning into a defender with the scoop and score—which was scored as a rushing touchdown I've been told, making it a memorable way to etch his name in the annals of Sooner history. But, before we talk about Oscar, we have to talk about Cole. Oscar only had 40 yards rushing at the half and while he was contributing in the passing game, it was Cole that opened everything up for Oscar to finally start to rumble after the half. He threw that early interception and came right to me when he left the field and told me, 'It won't happen again, Coach. I got this.' Then he went out there and backed it up. We were facing eight-man fronts to start the game, but once Cole softened them up with some precision passing, everything else followed. We're going to be singing Oscar's praises for a long time in Norman, but let's make sure Cole gets some love too."

Question Two - Lance Larson (The Daily Gamecock): "Outside of the few miscues by your squad, Coach Leon, the Gamecocks really struggled to get any traction offensively. What did you say to the defense, particularly Karlos Vigil, to get them to lock in and stop bailing out the South Carolina offense?"

Armando Leon: "Controlled aggression, Lance. Karlos is a fiery guy and he was trying to single-handily win this game for us, which got him in a bit of trouble. Two separate occasions he gave the South Carolina offense a free first down, both on failed third-down conversions, that led to points. I told him, and the whole defense, we need to focus on making the right play, not the impact play. Sacks mean nothing if we get penalties on them and give the yardage right back. Once we stopped playing like we had to atone for our earlier miscues, it all fell into place."

Question Three - James McDavid (OU Daily): "Coach Leon. One year, one conference championship. Do you have any words for those that doubted the hire less than a year ago, now that you sit at this podium a SEC Champion and likely one of the four teamsw with an automatic bye in the upcoming College Football Playoff?"

Armando Leon: "All year I've done the talking and let my team back it up. Twelve wins later and we're sitting right where we expected ourselves to be. Go ahead and keep doubting us, 'cause we're itching to prove you wrong. I'm thankful for all we've accomplished this year, but I'm hungry for more and so are the men in that locker room. That should scare the rest of the playoff field."

Listen, I was one of those doubting the hiring of Armando. I'm not afraid to admit it and eat crow. Especially now that we're FINALLY sitting at the top of the SEC Mountain.

I don't think anyone, even Armando Leon if we're being honest, expected this quick of a turnaround. But, it just goes to show you what hard work, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to excellence can get you.

For me, if we go out and lose in the first round, it will be disappointing. But after the season we just witnessed from Armando Leon and Co., I am more confident in the future of the Sooners than I have been in a long while.

We're back, baby. And I don't think the Schooner is going to stop circling anytime soon.
