2030 Week Five Preview - #16 Texas A&M (2-1) @ #1 Oklahoma (4-0)
Boone Tillman // Sooner Born • Published: September 20th, 2030
It feels like it's been forever since the Oklahoma Sooners kicked off the 2030 season with a 44-14 rotisserie of the Oregon Ducks, while in reality it's been almost a month since the Sooners graced the "Palace on the Prairie." The Sooners come into the contest still unblemished with a 4-0 record, and in fact, when the Sooners and Texas A&M Aggies officially kick off tomorrow afternoon, it'll be exactly 364 days since the last Sooners' last loss—last year's 52-51 loss in Gainesville.
We'll take a quick peek at how we stack up with the A&M Aggies before we get to the latest "Schooner Scoop" where we'll talk to Coach Leon about the nearly year-long unbeaten streak, the familiar faces making their first trip to Norman as visitors, and the Sooners' first official recruit for the 2030 cycle.

Schooner Scoop
BT: "As y'all prepare to face the Texas A&M Aggies tomorrow, Coach, are you aware that on Sunday, it will be a full calendar year since the last loss by the Oklahoma Sooners? What does that kind of consistency mean to you, after all the doubts and slander you overcame in your first season?"
AL: "If we lose tomorrow, it's on you, Boone. That's like a no-hitter in baseball, bro, you don't talk about it until it's happened! But, even if we don't last an entire calendar year, it's still an incredible run we've had since I arrived in Norman. The plan is always to finish better than you started, but even I think we're setting the bar pretty high for ourselves."
BT: "On the other side of the field is a pair of familiar faces: Chance Ojabo and Maurice Awosika. Both guys were a part of last year's Championship squad, even though they were both little more than role players. What kind of challenge does it represent going against guys who have inside knowledge of your personnel and defensive formations?"
AL: "They've both become integral pieces of the Aggies' offense, but it's curious that they both ended up on the same team. If I recall, they both entered the portal stating a desire to find somewhere with a 'clearer path' to playing time."
BT: "Have you spoken to either of them since they entered the portal about ending up on the other side in the SEC, or fighting each other for playing time?"
AL: "Talking to players enrolled at other schools is a violation of NCAA rules, Boone. But I will say, if they think being on the team last year is going to give them some inside baseball on our defense, they're dead wrong. We've got plenty of new wrinkles to throw at them, so I hope they're ready for the roughest homecoming of their lives."
BT: "Murder's row coming up with Alabama, Texas, Ole Miss, and then Georgia before the bye week. How important is it to get a win here to keep the pressure from reaching a critical point this early in the season?"
AL: "I said it before, if we come out of this with one, or even two losses, I think we're still alright. So, if we happen to lose tomorrow, that just means we've got to lock in and make sure we don't snowball."
•••
The Aggies have leaned heavily on the rushing ability of not only Rico Willie, but the two-headed monster in the backfield of former Sooners Ojabo and Awosika and I've got to be honest, after watching Nathan Henderson shred our defense last week, I am worried about how we're going to hold up in run defense. They've got three legitimate game-breaking threats in the backfield that would keep most defensive coordinators up late into the midnight hour. But then again, we don't have just anyone scheming up our defense.
If Leon and Co. can limit the production of the Aggies rushing attack, I don't see any way that Willie can channel his inner Uncle Rico and start slinging that pig all over the field. If we stop the run, we stop the Aggies. And if there is anyone I'd bet on outscheming the opponent, it's Leon.
We may not go undefeated this season, but the streak will reach a full calendar year. Put that in your pipe and smoke it, folks.
Texas A&M 17, Oklahoma 38.

The Sooner Schooner Keeps Rolling In Norman
Boone Tillman // Sooner Born • Published: September 28th, 2030
It has officially been a full calendar year since the Oklahoma Sooners felt the sting of defeat thanks to their 33-7 belting of the Texas A&M Aggies. The Oklahoma Sooners controlled the game from the onset, marching down the field on their first possession on a crisp nine-play drive before Nickey found Brad Thorne on a swing route for the quick two-yard score.
A misthrow by Nickey, who misjudged the depth of FS Al Sledge leading to an interception, stalled the second drive, but the Aggies were unable to capitalize, going three-and-out after the turnover, Oklahoma made them pay with back-to-back scoring drives to extend the lead to 17-0 as the halftime neared.
With the game threatening to slip through their fingers, Rico Willie mustered what would be the best drive of the game, going 4/5 for 45 yards, and after a roughing the passer on DT Terrelle Reaves kept the drive alive, Willie found Terrence Lawton for a 10-yard score to give the Aggies a glimmer of hope going into the break.
Oklahoma opened the second half with another quick march down the field, but a pair of sacks by the Aggies stalled the second straight Sooners' drive into a field goal. With the momentum still firmly on their side after finishing the first half with a touchdown drive, Rico Willie went right back to work with his first opportunity out of the break. A 27-yard completion to Conrad Jewell was followed by a 42-yard completion to JC Johns and the Aggies were a few plays away from suddenly making it a game again.
Then, Richard Trainer stepped in front of a mistimed curl route, plucking the ball from the air and turning on the jets for a 92-yard touchdown return that punched the last of the life out of the Aggies. While Oklahoma would misfire on their two-point attempt, the damage was done and the Aggies never crossed midfield again in the eventual 33-7 defeat.
•••
Question One - James McDavid (OU Daily): "Coach, it looked like Rico Willie and the offense finally started finding their groove before the halftime break, and picked up right where they left off coming out of it. What can you say about the heads-up play by Richard Trainer to not only intercept the ball, but to turn defense into offense to snatch the Aggies' souls right before our very eyes?"
Armando Leon: "Play of the game, no question, James. If they even get a field goal there, it's a 10-point game and the Aggies believe they have a chance. Trainer didn't just close the door, he slammed it shut, then nailed it down for good measure. Those are the kinds of plays championship defenses make and we proved once again, we're up to the challenge."
Question Two - Johnny Mooreland (The Battalion): "Coach, a lot was made before the game about Chance Ojabo and Maurice Awosika returning to Norman and having an advantage after spending last season on the National Champion squad, yet you held them to a combined 30 yards on the ground in the contest. What about your defense makes it so hard for the opposition to game plan for, even when they would presumably have insider information?"
Armando Leon: "We're versatile and I think that is the biggest challenge for opposing coaches, Johnny. We can run four guys with their hands in the dirt, or none, and still execute our game plan exactly as intended. We run a number of different sets out of the same look, so even if they start to key on one thing, suddenly both edge rushers are dropping into coverage and you've got two safeties screaming off the edge. Even if Chance and Maurice had some tidbits to give the A&M staff, it wouldn't be helpful in the long run."
Question Three - Meg Semental (SEC Network): "Markelle Nickey had another strong performance, Coach, with 293 yards and two touchdowns, albeit with an interception in the middle. Is it fair to say, this is his team now?"
Armando Leon: "I mean, he's the quarterback, Meg. It's kind of always been his team. But if you're referring to his confidence back there under center, then definitely. He's operating just like Cole did a year ago, and that should scare the rest of the SEC. Imagine how deadly he'll be when he's actually got a full season under his belt? Let's just say, I'm glad he's on our side."
•••
I don't want to be all doom and gloom after a win that turned an entire calendar year without a Sooners' loss...but we almost got caught playing with our food today.
The offense tried getting cute, threw an ugly interception on a go ball that Nickey had no business throwing. Two drives ended with sacks resulting in field goals. And with all of that, we were one Richard Trainer interception away from being in a dogfight and not a 33-7 blowout.
I'm telling you, if Trainer doesn't break on that curl early and turn the tide, I don't know if we pull our heads out of our you-know-whats in time to escape this game.
But in a way, I'm kind of glad. You want those types of wake-up calls to happen early, against a team that isn't quite good enough to fraud check you. That way, when the real test comes, we're ready.
If I'm seeing it from the broadcast, I know Leon saw it on the field. I expect the team to be running doubles all week as a reminder that in the SEC, you're one bad game away from losing everything.

Oklahoma Flexing Its Muscles On Recruiting Trail With Slew Of Early Commitments
Boone Tillman // Sooner Born • Published: September 30th, 2030
The Oklahoma Sooners are 5-0 and still the No. 1-ranked team in the nation as they continue to exert their dominance on the opposition, and now it appears that dominance is translating to the recruiting trail as well.
After their 33-7 belting of the Texas A&M Aggies, Oklahoma went from not having a verbal commitment for the 2030 recruiting class, to suddenly having six in the span of 24 hours.
Oklahoma native Stanley Wrotto, of Oklahoma City, was the first to break the floodgates, posting late Saturday night on his IG: "I can't deny it anymore. There is nowhere else I'd rather be than home, sweet home! #BoomerSooner."
By the time most families were settling in for Sunday dinner, the number had grown to six. Joining CB Stanley Wrotto (#131) are T Antwan Ahmed (#59), HBs Carlos Hicks (#406) and Steve Hodges (#230), G John Sanders (#109), and FS Diego Vizcaino (#120).
"It was unexpected, for sure," commented Leon as he entered the Sooners' facility early Monday morning, "You don't expect 25% of your Big Board to commit overnight, but it just shows you that the country is starting to see the vision we've been building since Day One."
According to national scouts, Wrotto fits the model of the prototypical cornerback that Leon covets.
"He's got the size at the position that immediately stands out at 6'2", but it's more than that," clarified the source, "He has the strength to immediately knock his man off routes in press, the instincts to keep up with double moves, and most importantly, the top-end speed so that even on the rare occasion he gets beat, he still has the ability to recover.
"If Leon can finish developing him, you're looking at a guy who can legitimately erase half the field, that's not hyperbole."
What makes this potential recruiting class even scarier? Wrotto isn't even the most highly-ranked corner on the Sooners' Big Board, with No. 1 overall prospect Brian Lima and No. 2 Prince Onwenu also heavily favoring the Sooners as they narrow their lists down to three.
"If they nab all three of those guys? Good luck."
Oklahoma may not have to wait long to find out if they'll have the most fearsome group of cornerbacks ever recruited at the same time, with both Onwenu and Lima scheduled to visit Norman in the next two weeks.
"From people I've talked to close to the families, Oklahoma is the runaway favorite right now. Obviously things can change quickly on the trail, but if you put a gun to my head right now and asked me to predict where they would end up?"
"They're in Crimson and Cream."

2030 Week Six Preview - Alabama (4-1) @ #1 Oklahoma (5-0)
Boone Tillman // Sooner Born • Published: October 4th, 2030
The real meat and potatoes of the Oklahoma Sooners' schedule starts this week when the Alabama Crimson Tide roll into Gaylord Family Memorial Stadium to try and be the first to hand the defending National Champion Oklahoma Sooners their first loss of 2030.
Alabama fell last week in a closely contested contest in Happy Valley to the tune of 42-36, a loss that surprisingly saw them tumble out of the rankings, but don't let the fact that they don't have a shiny AP ranking next to their name lull you to sleep; this iteration of the Crimson Tide is not to be trifled with.
Y'all know the deal by now, after the graphic we'll dive right into the "Schooner Scoop" with Leon to talk about the mighty Crimson Tide along with some late injury news.

Schooner Scoop
BT: "The Alabama Crimson Tide are about to "Roll Tide" all the way into Norman, Oklahoma, Coach Leon. I know Nick Saban isn't scowling along the sideline anymore, but the name Alabama still inspires fear in the hearts of the opposition, no?"
AL: "I wouldn't say inspires fear, Boone, but it's a program that is still well respected. As you said, Saban ain't walking through those doors tomorrow, but DeBoer is a good coach in his own right. It's not a program we can simply overlook, that's for sure. Especially with the way Branham has been bulldozing his way through the competition."
BT: "11 touchdowns through five games is serious business, and I hope you don't take offense to this, coach, but I call 'em like I see 'em. Your defense wasn't exactly world-beaters on the ground against Mississippi State two weeks ago. I know you shut down our old tandem of Ojabo and Awosika last week, but even then, it felt like we almost got caught playing with our food so to speak. What're the plans to make sure Branham doesn't plow himself a new highway right through "The Palace" tomorrow afternoon?"
AL: "With everything we do defensively, it starts up front, Boone. We've got to be sound in gap integrity, shed our blockers, and put some damn hits on a running back. Branham is a powerful runner, but if you hit him early before he gets the engine churning, you've got a shot. Once he's running downhill, it takes a gang of guys to bring him down. We can't let that happen. This is one of those games where if you give up a chunk play or two through the air, but keep Branham from getting into a groove, you live with it."
BT: "Speaking of the defense, we've got some last-minute injury news, correct?"
AL: "Plugged in as always, Boone. Yeah, Tiquan Middlebrooks broke his hand today in practice and is expected to miss a few weeks. He isn't a starter, but anytime you lose an experienced depth piece, it hurts. He's a special teams ace, and if we happen to start seeing some injuries in the secondary, we're really going to start feeling it. Hopefully, it doesn't come to that. But in a game we fully expected to be a street fight, you never know what might happen."

Troy Branham is a one-man wrecking crew, folks, and if we can't keep him from building a head of steam we're going to be watching him drag Oklahoma Sooner defenders up and down the field all night. He's a Derrick Henry =-type back, and I don't say that lightly.
That being said, there aren't many in the nation I'd trust more than Armando Leon crafting a game plan. If he says they're going to put the focus on Branham, I expect it to get done. The only thing that worries me is Bagent is no slouch either. I just hope we don't get caught lacking in pass defense and end up watching the ball sail over us, rather than through us.
Until this streak is over though, I can't bet against Leon.
24 Alabama, 35 Oklahoma.
