Oklahoma De-Rails Branham With Another Vulgar Display of Power
Boone Tillman // Sooner Born • Published: October 5th, 2030
Coach Leon said it best: "Nick Saban ain't walking through that door!" and it was never more apparent than during the Oklahoma Sooners' 55-6 demolition of the Alabama Crimson Tide on Saturday afternoon in Norman, Oklahoma.
After the talking heads in Oklahoma, admittedly myself included, spent the past week questioning if this year's Sooners would get caught asleep at the wheel, they came out and delivered one of the most dominant performances of the season, but despite the final score, it was far from a sure thing early on.
On the Sooners' opening drive, facing 4th-and-one in their own territory, Coach Leon rolled the dice and sent Terrance Butcher up the middle hoping to gain a yard. Instead, he gained a loss of downs as the Tide took over with excellent field position.
In what would be the story of the night, Troy Branham was shut down on his first two attempts before a Max Bagent pass was batted down at the line, leaving Kalen DeBoer no choice but to send out the field goal unit. Elliot Burns would drill the 35-yard attempt and Alabama took their first, and only, lead of the game.
The Tide's reign was short lived, as 14 seconds later Brad Thorne finished off a blistering 75-yard run in the end zone to put the Sooners up for good.
What came after was an onslaught by the Sooners, with the only saving grace for Alabama being a late drive in the second quarter to scrape together a final field goal to enter the half trailing 28-6.
The scary thing for the Crimson Tide? Markelle Nickey was in the midst of his worst game of the season. The true freshman quarterback started a bleak 5/11 for 29 yards, but a final touchdown drive in the first half finally saw the freshman phenom catch fire, going 4/5 for 52 yards and a touchdown on the final drive and eventually ending his day on a 14/19 tear for 196 yards and three touchdowns.
Much like Nickey, the Sooners' offense never cooled down and even incited some postgame words between Kalen DeBoer and Armando Leon, although the pleasantries didn't extend past an animated exchange during the postgame handshake.
After the game, Coach Leon clarified the brief disagreement between himself and DeBoer, lauded the continued dominance of his rushing attack, and hailed his secondary for "stepping up to the plate."
•••
Question One - Meg Semental (SEC Network): "Coach Leon, can you share what happened in the postgame handshake between yourself and Coach DeBoer? From the sideline, it appeared that more than a simple 'good game' was exchanged between yourselves?"
Armando Leon: "Just a quick discussion about etiquette during a blowout, Meg. He questioned my team scoring two touchdowns in the final two minutes; I pointed out that if he didn't want us to score, don't go for it on fourth down trailing by 35 points late in the fourth quarter. The fact of the matter is, these kids get paid nowadays based on their stats. I ain't going to stand there with a straight face and tell a sophomore to tank his stats for the sake of sportsmanship. Get yours, kid, 'cause guess what? The guys on the other side get paid too, and they wouldn't hesitate to lay you out for a little extra cheddar."
Question Two - Duane Mudd (The Crimson White): "Troy Branham came into this game looking like the second coming of Derrick Henry. What did your defense do to slow his roll and keep him from dominating the game?"
Armando Leon: "Usually this is the part where I praise the hog mollies up front, but not today, Duane. Our game plan hinged on two things: swarming Branham every time he got the ball, but more importantly, lockdown coverage in the secondary. If our guys aren't plastered to the Alabama receivers and coming up with two interceptions that led to 14 points in the second quarter, then who knows what happens. We can't send eight guys at Branham if we're getting toasted like a marshmallow on the Fourth of July in coverage. They deserve a round of applause for sure."
Question Three - James McDavid (OU Daily): "Another game where a key player gets hurt, this time Terrance Butcher, yet your rushing attack keeps rolling behind the replacement. How crucial is it to have a deep bench at a position like that, and how do you plan to keep everyone happy when the injury bug isn't nipping?"
Armando Leon: "You've seen it already this season, James. There have been more than a few games where someone wasn't banged up, but we still fed all the mouths. It just means we have clearly defined roles for when everyone is healthy, but guys that are versatile enough to adapt and overcome when the need arises. Brad, Butch, Dill, or Isaac have the ability to take over a game if needed and that allows us to have some grace with guys who are banged up, let them fully heal, and live to fight another day."
•••
Before I get to the game, another round of applause for the home fans at Gaylord Family Memorial Stadium today. It was a moment you might have missed if you didn't know what to look for, but late in the fourth quarter, freshman quarterback Klay Abraham took the field in garbage time for the Crimson Tide.
The same Klay Abraham who chose the Tide over Oklahoma last recruiting cycle. And the Oklahoman faithful let him know what they thought of that decision, booing the true freshman relentlessly for the final five minutes of the contest. That's what I call home-field advantage.
Back to the game, this was the exact kind of showing Oklahoma needed after an uninspiring win over A&M last week. After the early miscue, it was green-light-go for the rushing attack. And even better, we got to see Nickey learn through his rough patch in real-time, something that is going to prove valuable later in the season. Now, he's struggled in a big game, against a big-time SEC opponent, and figured it out on the fly and got the job done.
You can't script that kind of experience, you just have to live it, and survive it.
Now, we're on to Dallas and the Red River Shootout.

2030 Week Seven Preview - Texas (4-2) @ #1 Oklahoma (6-0)
Boone Tillman // Sooner Born • Published: October 12th, 2030
It's fair season in Texas and that can only mean one thing, folks: it's time for the Oklahoma Sooners to remind the Texas Longhorns which side of the river boasts the better team. After last year's thrilling 45-38 Oklahoma win, the good guys will be looking to make it two straight over our hated rival this weekend in Dallas.
Before we can get to that, however, we've got to get the latest buzz in the "Schooner Scoop" as Leon talks about more injury news and how he plans to keep the Golden Hat in Norman for another season.

Schooner Scoop
BT: "Coach, another week, and yet another injury. After staying relatively injury-free last season, the bug has bitten y'all it seems this season. What is the plan without the services of Terrence Butcher for one more game?"
AL: "Plan don't change, Boone, only the pieces do. We're blessed to have a running back room with five guys who could be starters at most FBS programs, so we're going to lean on our depth and figure it out. Butch is an integral part of our team, but these things happen. We're prepared for worst-case scenarios like this one and we're confident the wagon is going to roll right through the State Fair tomorrow."
BT: "Speaking of rolling right through the State Fair and the Longhorns, what is the plan to attack them? On one hand, they have one of the most explosive offenses in the nation. On the other? The most porous defense. But, a birdie told me you think their defense is better than their overall ranking suggests?"
AL: "They're definitely a conundrum, Boone, 'cause you look at the roster and they've got talent. No question. So why the pieces aren't working on a week-to-week basis is head-scratching. But, we're not going to let that stop us from taking advantage of it. As you mentioned, they've got an explosive offense so we'll need to keep pace until our defense can get a few stops. The Achilles heel of their offense is turnovers; Westerman has six interceptions and five more fumbles. We'll need to exploit that to get the edge we need. Hopefully, we don't have to wait until the final punt return to get that advantage."
BT: "You mentioned the Texas defense has talent, but execution seems to be the problem. I'm not asking you to specifically speak to the Longhorns, but typically that is a situation where the coaching staff is losing the locker room, no? I only ask, because if you talk to some diehard Texas fans, the shine from those two National Championships is already wearing thin. You wouldn't think that two years removed and they'd already be drafting their "Fire Kiffin" campaign, but that is exactly what I'm hearing is happening."
AL: "Listen, I'm not getting involved in all of that. You never want to see a guy lose his job, because I know all too well there is more than just a job behind that person. There's a family that has to be uprooted, wives who have to figure things out, kids who are suddenly moving with no notice. I would say, it shows you why Oklahoma is a class ahead of the Longhorns, however. Or at least, I hope that if I have one rough season, y'all ain't going to be calling for my head on a pike, Boone."
•••
If Leon wins two Championships in three years, the only thing I'll want his head on a pike for is leaving for Alabama.
I'm kidding, folks. I don't think that's in the cards for Coach Leon. Or at least, I don't think it is. But I digress.
This is a Texas Longhorns team that is a far cry from the version that won two of three National Championships from 2026-2028. Their defense is in shambles, their offense lives and dies by the big play, and the fanbase is already clamoring for their next savior.
I say it's the perfect time to hit 'em where it hurts with another blowout win.
17 Texas, 38 Oklahoma.
