Oklahoma Dominates Georgia As They Continue To March Towards History
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: December 31st, 2031

The Oklahoma Sooners wasted little time reminding the Georgia Bulldogs why they are the reigning back-to-back National Champions, jumping all over the Bulldogs behind a 24-7 first quarter en route to a 55-24 drubbing of Georgia that is likely to earn some strongly worded letters from PETA.

Markelle Nickey marched the Oklahoma Sooners right down the field to start the game, finishing the brisk six-play drive with a 1-yard strike to Isaac Adcock, the first of his four touchdowns in the Sugar Bowl victory. Things went from bad to worse for the Bulldogs on their opening offensive possession.

Looking to get some quick rhythm after a holding penalty pushed them ten yards closer to their goal line, George Okoye tried to find TE Malik Smoker on a shovel pass screen. The problem was; Smoker never turned around. The ball bounced off Smoker's back and was deftly plucked from the air by Jason Pilgrim, putting the Sooners right back in scoring range.

Adcock punched in his second touchdown and it looked like the Sooners were well on their way to rolling the wagon out of New Orleans with a Sugar Bowl trophy in tow. To his credit, Okoye composed himself to march Georgia down the field, finding De'Andre Kashama on a 16-yard touchdown to briefly silence the swarming Sooner fans in attendance.

Oklahoma would score the next twenty-four points, with the aid of a second Okoye interception, building a commanding lead that not even 10 final points before the half by Georgia could put a dent into.

Oklahoma entered the half with the gargantuan 38-17 lead and tacked on two more touchdowns for good measure before backup QB Ben Beach scored a morale victory for Georgia with a late touchdown.

If anyone wanted to question the Oklahoma Sooners' determination to reach their third consecutive National Championship, consider yourself warned.

They mean business.

Question One - Larry Samson (The Red & Black): "Coach, your offense has relied on a number of different backs to keep the chains moving throughout the season. With the return of Tyler Ryder, you once again had a stable of three backs with unique abilities, that seemed to give the Bulldogs fits defensively. How hard is it, as a defensive coach, to prepare for a team with so many versatile weapons at their disposal?"

Armando Leon: "Ty's return was a big part of our success. He brings that bruising, old school element to complement Isaac and Dill's flash and sizzle. But I imagine it's incredibly difficult. We have the ability to utilize any of those three at any time, sometimes on the same drive, to keep the defense guessing. When you're stuffing Ty between the tackles, suddenly Dill is downfield catching passes, or Isaac is flared out on a screen with a convoy. We make sure to give each of them the ball in different situations to avoid the defense being tipped off. It's worked so far and we're going to keep utilizing it until the wheels fall off."

Question Two - Meg Semental (SEC Network): "Many call the SEC the hardest conference in college football, with some even going as far as saying it's closer to NFL level than it is to the other FBS power conferences. Yet, you've performed your best against the SEC with only one loss in your career against an SEC school. Is the conferences superiority simply overstated, or are you simply better prepared for that type of competition?"

Armando Leon: "I can't speak to any of the other programs in the SEC, but we train to win regardless of the opponent. I know other coaches say that, but we do it. So when you know you're going up against the best—and believe me I certainly think the SEC is the toughest conference in college football—it makes you rise to the occasion every single practice. That type of intensity doesn't just disappear when the patch doesn't say "SEC" on the opponent. And I think that is what sets us apart."

Question Three - James McDavid (OU Daily): "Coach, the three running backs are obviously getting a lot of attention, and deservedly so. But once again, Markelle Nickey rose to the occasion. How mind-boggling is it that he's still a sophomore and yet is out here performing with the poise of a veteran?"

Armando Leon: "He was built for this, period. He had some up and down moments in the regular season, even he'll admit that, but when the lights shine the brightest, Nick rises to the occasion. There's a reason he's the captain, I've been pounding that drum all season. Nothing he does anymore leaves me in awe, he's just that dude."

One down, two to go, folks.

I think this one speaks for itself.

We came, we saw, and we kicked some Bulldog ass.

On to the next one. #BoomerSooner.

2031 College Football Playoff Peach Bowl Preview - #4 Duke (12-2) Vs. #1 Oklahoma (13-1)
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: January 8th, 2032

The magic number is down to two and the Duke Blue Devils have the unfortunate distinction of being the Oklahoma Sooners next victim on their way to a third consecutive National Championship. You know the drill by now; we're going to take a quick look at how the Sooners and Blue Devils stack up by the numbers before diving right into a Peach Bowl edition of the "Schooner Scoop."

Schooner Scoop

BT: "I think it's safe to say that many expected the Tennessee Volunteers to be on the opposite sideline when the Peach Bowl kicked off, rather than the ACC runner up Duke Blue Devils. Did the Blue Devils win take you by surprise?"

AL: "We know firsthand how potent the Volunteers offense is, but defense travels. The Blue Devils have one of the best defenses in the country headlined by a ferocious pass rush, and that tipped the scales in their favor. Did it take me by surprise? I'll be honest, a little bit. I wasn't sure if Duke had enough offense, even with their stellar defense, to get the job done. Now, it's our job to figure out how to keep Nick upright while scoring enough points of our own."

BT: "You mentioned their ferocious pass rush. Keenan Keehney and Ofisa Luani have combined for 38 sacks this season, more than some G6 team's entire roster. How crucial is it going to be to identify where they are coming from and identify the hot route to make sure Nick isn't getting beaten like a drum?"

AL: "How we handle those two will make or break our offensive game plan. And I'll give credit to Manny Diaz; he's giving offensive coordinators fits. Sometimes they line up on the same time, sometimes they each take a corner. I've even seen Luani drop into coverage while Keehney blitzes, a clear switch of standard roles, to keep their opponent off-balance. Identifying what they're trying to do pre-snap is going to be paramount for Nick. The quick game will be our bread and butter until we get comfortable enough with our coverage to let it fly."

BT: "Rumors are swirling that Manny Diaz is prepared to accept an offer to become the next head coach of the LSU Tigers, after Kenny Dillingham's dismissal earlier this week. You have your fair share of experience coaching in the playoff while another school pursues you. How difficult is it to manage both your own coaching journey while trying to stay committed to the team you're still representing?"

AL: "It's incredibly difficult, Boone. You feel like you're getting stretched all over the map. I was fortunate enough to be able to peg Kirk Ferentz early and get him in Norman to handle the day-to-day with Oklahoma, enabling me to focus on Maryland's playoff run. I can't speak to Manny's situation—I don't know if his deal with LSU is done or it's just speculation, but it's definitely a tricky situation to navigate. It's a much better feeling being on this side, having all of my attention focused on the next game."

I'll be blunt, I don't think the Duke Blue Devils have enough offense to beat us. Point blank.

But, I also said that about their matchup with Tennessee. The difference became two interceptions by Benji Lemmons. The Dukes have lived by their defensive prowess and ability to generate timely turnovers all season.

If Nickey controls the ball, we win this outright.

If we find ourselves chasing mistakes, we may be in some trouble. Defense travels and I expect an SEC-caliber defensive bout between two of the best defensive minds in the country. But, sometimes it's the Jimmies and the Joes. We have the Joes.

17 Duke, 28 Oklahoma.

Sympathy For the Devils - Oklahoma Continues March Towards History
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: January 8th, 2032

It was a tale of two halves for the Duke Blue Devils in Atlanta on Saturday, and thankfully for the Oklahoma Sooners, the Blue Devils robust second half only came after Oklahoma took a 38-7 lead into the halftime break.

Early, it appeared defense and special teams would rule the day. Oklahoma scored both of their first-quarter touchdowns on special teams—a punt return by Isaac Adcock and a scoop-and-score fumble recovery by MLB Jason Pilgrim—while the Blue Devils took advantage of an interception on Markelle Nickey's first pass of the game to earn a quick touchdown themselves.

Once the first quarter jitters settled, however, the Sooners exerted control.

Oklahoma put up 24 points in the second quarter, behind three touchdowns from Markelle Nickey to Maurice Lucky, as they slowly built the colossal lead.

The fact that the Duke Blue Devils came out of the half with their hair on fire proved inconsequential, the hole was simply too deep to dig themselves out of. Nonetheless, they tried.

Ofisa Luani and Keenan Heeney each recorded a third-down sack to halt the first two Sooners drives in the break, while Duke went a perfect 3/3 on their own attempts, fueling murmurs around the stadium that maybe the Sooners were playing with their food.

Then, the engine roared back to life. Isaac Adcock added one more touchdown while JaMichael Buggs hauled in his own to stretch the lead to the 52-28 final.

•••

Question One - James McDavid (OU Daily): "Coach, another game where your offense built a big lead before you let the other teams offense get going. Is it simply a matter of the team losing focus in a big game, or the opposing coach making better halftime adjustments?"

Armando Leon: "Nerves ease up when you know you're going to lose. Guys start playing freely; execution that wasn't there before suddenly reveals itself. These things happen in big games; it's a proven fact. I think it's less about us easing up and more about the opposition relaxing, knowing whether they win or lose, the mission is already lost."

Question Two - Cooper Irvine (The Duke Chronicle): "The Blue Devils defense jumped all over Markelle Nickey early, with Ofisa Luani hitting him to alter the throw that would turn into an interception. What can you say about the poise of Nickey dismissing the gaffe and executing from there on out?"

Armando Leon: "I'm running out of adjectives, to be honest. He's just got that moxie in him. He saw the interception and decided no more. You could tell the Blue Devils defense was feeling themselves, thinking they'd rattled him. But he picked himself up off the mat and kept firing. Once he strung a few completions together, it was BBQ chicken."

Question Three - Meg Semental (SEC Network): "Arizona State and USC is scheduled for later today, Coach. Who would you rather see in the National Championship?"

Armando Leon: "I don't care who it is, Meg, but I know one thing for sure: They better be ready for a tall can of whoopass."

•••

That first interception had me worried, no lies here, folks. But then Nickey went right back to work, rocking the Blue Devils defense completely to sleep. Once we started rolling, you could tell we were determined to escape with a 'W.'

The random defensive lapses are still infuriating, but so long as we keep building early leads we should be more than fine.

One more game, and we're in the record books.

Side note. Have you tried not throwing interceptions?

I don't mind throwing interceptions, to be honest. To a point. One or two a game doesn't chap me. It's inevitable when you pass the ball as much as we have this season. but I'd rather push for the big play then check it down every time and hope for YAC
