Berkeley, CA • The first game of California's new era delivered exactly what fans hoped for—an emotional rivalry win and a glimpse of a program built on resilience.

Behind an efficient performance from quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele and a defense that made game-changing plays when it mattered most, the Golden Bears opened the 2026 season with a 21-16 victory over UCLA at Memorial Stadium.

UCLA opened the scoring with a 44-yard field goal. Cal Running back Adam Mohammed answered with a 1-yard touchdown run before Sagapolutele took over in the second quarter. The sophomore quarterback connected with Cooper Perry for a 16-yard touchdown and later found Ian Strong on a beautiful 41-yard strike, giving the Bears a 21-13 halftime lead.

Sagapolutele earned Player of the Game honors, finishing 20-of-33 for 275 yards and two touchdowns, showing the poise and leadership that made him the centerpiece of Cal's new era.

But while the offense built the lead, it was the Golden Bear defense that protected it.

UCLA quarterback Nico Iamaleava repeatedly marched the Bruins into scoring position, but Cal's defense responded with clutch plays all afternoon. The biggest came when the Bears forced a fumble by Iamaleava deep inside the red zone, erasing a prime scoring opportunity and swinging momentum back to California.

Later, with UCLA trying to seize control of the game, the Bruins elected to go for it on 4th-and-2 in Bear Territory. Once again, the Cal defense answered the call, as defensive tackle Stanley Saole-McKenzie burst into the back field and stuffed the run, forcing a turnover on downs to keep the five-point advantage intact.

Still, UCLA refused to go away.

The Bruins outgained Cal 403-395 in total offense and drove into the red zone one final time with a chance to steal the rivalry game. With less than ten seconds remaining and the ball just yards from the goal line, it looked as though UCLA would get one last snap to try for the game-winning touchdown.

Instead, confusion took over.

The Bruins struggled to get lined up as precious seconds ticked away. Rather than spiking the ball or getting the offense set quickly, valuable time melted off the clock. Before Iamaleava could take the snap, the final seconds expired.

No final play.

No last-second heroics.

Just disbelief on the UCLA sideline as the clock struck 0:00.

It was a crushing ending for the Bruins, whose poor late-game clock management overshadowed an otherwise strong offensive performance.

For California, however, the finish perfectly embodied the identity the new coaching staff hopes to establish.

The offense delivered explosive plays. The quarterback looked every bit like a future star. And when the game was on the line, the defense came through with a red-zone takeaway, a critical fourth-down stop and the composure to capitalize on UCLA's final mistake.

The Golden Bears begin the season 1-0, and if Week 1 was any indication, Berkeley may once again be home to one of the toughest teams on the West Coast.

Bad weather, not the best game, but a win's a win.
