Shawn Clark, Mountaineers set their eyes on College Football Playoff
The Appalachian State Mountaineers are the winningest program in college football over the playoff era to not make the CFP, but that may change in the 2024 season.
A day after being named the preseason favorite to win the Sun Belt Conference football championship for the East Division, Mountaineers head coach Shawn Clark addressed the pivotal change to the playoff format for the upcoming year, which tripled from four teams to 12 to complete for a national championship. The new format could potentially have a team from one of the Group of Five Conferences, like the Sun Belt. Before the expansion, a team from one of the Group of Five was guaranteed a spot in one of the New Year’s Six bowls, which would now be the CFP opening round.
“I like the setup. It gives us a chance to make a run at being in the College Football Playoffs, and that’s what you want an opportunity to do. In the years previously, you had to be undefeated, be a Power Five program,” said Clark. “You still have to have a great resume’ but whoever the highest ranked non-power four program has the opportunity to play in the college football playoff — that’s what you want. Our goal is always to win conference championships, bowl championships, and now this gives you an opportunity to make the College Football Playoffs."
“We play in one of the best conferences in all of college football. I believe our conference is set up for one of our teams to make a run and get a berth in the College Football Playoffs - hopefully that team is us.”
The Sun Belt Conference had an outstanding resume in 2023 as 12 of the 14-member schools played in a bowl game, winning five of them. That included Appalachian State, who bested the University of Miami at Ohio in the Avocados from Mexico Cure Bowl championship. Since re-joining the FBS in 2014, the Mountaineers have yet to have a losing season and are 7-1 in it's bowl games.
As Appalachian State looks to make a run at their fifth Sun Belt Conference championship and the first since 2019, they’ll bring back 70 percent of their production on both sides of the ball, which includes 14 starters. The Mountaineers are scheduled to open their season against East Tennessee State in Boone, NC.
