Pittsburgh, PA. - Anthony Richardson made sure his return to Lucas Oil Stadium was unforgettable. The former Colts quarterback erupted for 401 total yards and five touchdowns, leading the Pittsburgh Steelers to a thrilling 38-28win over Indianapolis despite a career night from Drew Allar, who threw for 442 yards in defeat.
Early on, it looked like the Steelers were in control. While the Colts settled for field goals, Richardson and the Pittsburgh offense found the end zone twice to take a 14-6 lead. But momentum swung midway through the second quarter when Richardson’s fumble set up a 41-yard touchdown strike from Allar to Jonathan Taylor, trimming the lead to 14-13. By halftime, the Colts had battled back to within one, 21-20.
The two young quarterbacks traded blows throughout the third quarter, with Allar connecting on a two-point conversion to knot the game at 28 apiece. But when the pressure was highest, it was Richardson who delivered.
After orchestrating a drive that resulted in a field goal to regain the lead, Pittsburgh faced 4th-and-goal from the 8-yard line late in the fourth quarter. Rather than settle for three, head coach Mike Tomlin put the ball — and the game — in Richardson’s hands.
“A field goal does nothing for us, so we told him to let it rip. It was his moment,” Tomlin said after the win.
Richardson rolled to his right and fired a dart across the field to DK Metcalf for the go-ahead touchdown, sealing the victory and punctuating a statement performance.
Allar and the Colts made one final push, connecting on a 65-yard bomb to Michael Pittman Jr., but with no timeouts and the clock running, the comeback fell short.
“Now that the game’s behind us? Yeah, I wanted this one — bad,” Richardson admitted afterward. “It wasn’t about proving them wrong, but proving to myself that I’m still that guy — the one they drafted. To have this kind of performance here meant a lot.”
Teammates knew how much the night meant to him.
“We knew what this game represented,” said Metcalf. “We wanted to go out there and get this one for him.”
The Steelers may have stolen a win in Indianapolis, but if Drew Allar’s performance was any indication, the Richardson–Allar rivalry is only just beginning.
