Investigation into Stanford’s Bubba Mack, alleged tampering over RB Jamarice Wilder, reaches impasse

The joint investigation into alleged tampering by Stanford head coach Bubba Mack has stalled, sources told ESPN, as Mack has declined to turn over his cell phone records to investigators from the NCAA, ACC, SEC, and Conference USA.

The inquiry stems from tampering allegations filed earlier this year by Florida and Kennesaw State related to the transfer of running back Jamarice Wilder, who joined Stanford this offseason after stints with both programs.

While Stanford has been described as “fully cooperative,” providing access to Mack’s university emails and other institutional correspondence, multiple sources say the lack of access to Mack’s personal phone data has “significantly limited” the investigation’s ability to corroborate contact or communication that might support the schools’ claims.

According to one compliance official familiar with the process, investigators have been unable to find “direct evidence of tampering,” though they continue to review communication timelines and transfer documentation related to Wilder’s move from Florida to Stanford.

However, Mack’s refusal to hand over phone records has created friction between Stanford’s legal team and NCAA investigators, with one source noting that the Cardinal’s cooperation “only goes as far as the university’s jurisdiction allows.”

“Stanford has done what’s been asked of them institutionally,” the source said. “Coach Mack’s private phone is not university property, and that’s where things have gotten complicated.”

The NCAA and ACC are reportedly preparing to move forward with potential penalties — a step that could range from recruiting restrictions to a formal show-cause order — despite the absence of conclusive proof. League officials have cited “obstruction of process” as a key factor in determining next steps, echoing precedents from similar investigations in recent years.

For now, both Stanford and the ACC have declined to comment on ongoing proceedings.

Behind the scenes, several athletic department officials around the country are watching closely. Mack, who led Kennesaw State to back-to-back conference titles before leading Stanford to the No. 1 ranking this season, has quickly established himself as one of college football’s rising coaches.
