Earl Nienhuis throws for six TDs as Cardinal rout No. 8 Florida
Stanford had forty-five first downs against the Florida Gators on Saturday. Florida had forty-three total plays.
It was a completely one-sided matchup in Palo Alto as the Cardinal put in their bid into being a top three team, routing No. 8 Florida 56-21 behind Earl Nienhuis six touchdown passes, including four to true freshman tight end Colt Mixon.
The game was never competitive as Stanford scored on the third play from scrimmage, a 49-yard catch and run by Rodney Cookus who finished with ten receptions for 191 yards and two touchdowns. Florida's first drive ended with Terrence Urbik being sacked and ten plays later, after a conversion on third and thirteen with a 29-yard completion to Cookus, Mixon caught the first of his four touchdowns to begin the rout.
Nienhus finished the game 24 of 26 for 335 yards and six touchdowns, all career highs. D.J. Sapp got in the game, getting his first career snaps, and went 3 for 3 for 38 yards as Stanford emptied the bench in the fourth quarter.

That's a paddlin.
Earl looks like the right choice at QB. Maybe Mack is onto something here.

The Victory Lap: Stanford made the right choice at quarterback, D.J. Bass' struggles rear their ugly head and farewell to a legend

Even with Houston losing to Boise State in the season opener, former Stanford quarterback Alex Rowe played well enough in the game that the jury was still out on whether or not Stanford made the right decision, choosing to ride with Earl Nienhuis over Rowe, who led them to the playoffs and an ACC Championship.
Now, it's just two games and the jury is still deliberating but through two games, especially after Rowe's two interception performance against Auburn in a 42-21 loss compared to Nienhuis' six touchdowns against Florida, advantage Nienhuis.
Stanford's offense looks relatively the same as last season in terms of concepts, formations and personnel groupings but the big difference has been their effectiveness on early downs when throwing and being able to attack down the field on third down, completing all ten of their third down attempts against Florida.
Should we be worried about D.J. Baas?
The NC State/Marshall/Penn State transfer had a tough day against Florida's speedy pass rushers who were able to get to Nienhuis on their second effort, including an early strip sack that could have kept Florida in the game.
Baas was solid for the second half when he was able to get back to his strength which is running the football and he will probably be fine in most games. However, it's clear that Baas struggles against smaller and more athletic defensive ends that are able to just outwork him and outlast him on the rep.
While that's not as big of a concern within the flow of a regular game where they have to respect the threat of the run, where Baas is really effective, if Stanford is ever in predictable passing situations, trailing late and needing to go to straight drop back, that could be a weakness that teams are able to attack.
A farewell to Shaquille Marks
Stanford coach Bubba Mack confirmed that it's a torn pectoral for Marks and that his season, and by extension his Stanford career, is officially over.
Marks was a three-star high school prospect that played in all twelve games as a true freshman prior to Mack's arrival before Mack reloaded the offensive line room and brought in four transfer portal additions, relegating Marks to a backup who played in just three games and had to redshirt.
A lot of kids would have transferred but he stuck around, earning a starting role in that 2029 team that went on that playoff run and earned second team All-American honors at tackle after starting the year as a backup before filling in for Jameson Flood and Neil Pryor at different parts of the season due to injury.
Marks unselfishness was on display the next year when he made the move to guard to accommodate for Flood and Pryor as the two tackles where he would once again earn All-American honors, leading the team with 862 snaps played. He easily could have declared for the draft but chose to come back to help stabilize a young offensive line.
Players like him often go unnoticed but Trumaine Lasike doesn't rush for the million yards he did without Marks. The team doesn't bring in two first-time starters at quarterback, now three, without a guy like Marks up front with only one sack allowed in the last three seasons.
Speedy recovery and thank you.
