Coastal Shows No Mercy In Freeman's Return

The Chanticleers came out of the half with a vengeance, holding the Bulldogs to a mere 15 years of offense in the 2nd half while tallying four sacks and an interception to send the Bulldogs back to Georgia with the tails between their legs.

Conway, SC. - If the final score didn't tell you how much bad blood remained between Coastal Carolina and Marcus Freeman, the two passing touchdowns in the final two minutes certainly did.

And if that wasn't enough, the postgame handshake, or lack thereof, stood as further evidence. Not a single Chanticleer except head coach Brian Hartline even looked at Freeman, let alone made an effort to shake their former coach's hand.

With signs ranging from Freeman inside a dog kennel to an image of Hartline snatching a Cuban link chain off Freeman's neck, the Coastal Crazies were out in full force to boo their former leader.

When asked if he was sending a message with the two late touchdown passes, Hartline revealed how deep the wounds really went.

"I left that up to the guys. We had the ball with under three minutes and I asked Ant, 'What do you guys want to do?'"

Prude quickly added clarity. "Embarrass him. That's what we said. He played us, all of us. You saw that in the crowd, you felt it when we celebrated on the field. We didn't just want to beat him, we wanted to run him out of town so bad he'd never forget."

While the Chanticleers were candid after the game, Freeman himself skipped the postgame press conference, a move that will surely result in a fine from the SEC. After his former team hung 52 points on his current squad to drop them to 4-4, Freeman has bigger problems than media obligations.

To their credit, the Bulldogs fought for a half to stay even with the clearly motivated Chanticleers. They answered Coastal's first two scores with touchdowns of their own, including a 48 yard scamper by Barry Peters on his lone carry of the rain soaked affair. But Coastal struck at the buzzer with a 17 yard strike to Darin Best, who weaved through the Dawgs defense for six.

The Chanticleers opened the second half with a field goal drive, not the dagger they wanted, but enough pressure to force Georgia to abandon its ball-control approach and put the game in the hands of redshirt freshman Duke Hamm.

From there, Coastal's defense took over. They sacked Hamm six times, four in the second half alone, and picked off the young quarterback once as they stifled the Bulldogs after the break. Of Georgia's 205 total yards, only 15 came in the second half.

Meanwhile, Prude added four more touchdowns to his Heisman resume, finishing with 371 passing yards, 83 rushing yards, and seven total touchdowns (four passing, three rushing).

"You just sit back and marvel sometimes," offensive coordinator Connor McQueen said. "I've seen a lot of guys run this Air Raid style offense, but none with the explosion and crispness he does."

Coastal remains home next week as the NC State Wolfpack (5-2) head to town riding a two-game losing streak.

Chants Receive Another Wave of Commitments Following Georgia Blowout

Image

Conway, SC. - The recruiting commitments continue pouring in for the Chanticleers and first-year head coach Brian Hartline, with nine more players pledging allegiance to The Teal over the weekend.

The headliners are #1 WR and sixth overall prospect Jeff Braham from Cedar Hill, Texas, and #2 CB and ninth overall prospect Eric Clinton from Tampa, Florida.

"Who wouldn't want to play in this offense when you see the numbers these guys are putting up?" Braham said when asked why he picked the Chanticleers. While Braham lacks the size of Coastal's current receiving corps at 5'11", he certainly has the speed to fit right in.

"With Braham and last year's five-star receiver Dalton Fowler, Hartline already has a pair of studs to replace Briggs and Sawyer," one recruiting analyst noted.

Clinton is a prototypical man coverage corner with the speed (4.3 40-yard dash) and size (6'0", 195 lbs) to press opposing receivers at the line without getting knocked off his stance, then the speed to stay step-for-step on deep routes.

"He's the type of corner Reyna is looking for in his aggressive scheme, guys he can put on an island and not worry about," the analyst added. "Clinton is that shutdown type of corner."

Third overall cornerback and 21st prospect George Garvin also committed over the weekend, giving Coastal four five-star recruits midway through the season.

That number could balloon to eight depending on key recruiting battles. The Chanticleers are in a close race with Ohio State for fifth overall prospect ATH Doug Kelemete out of Delaware, while also leading for a pair of defensive tackles in Joe Tobin (15th overall) and JaMichael Colbert (19th overall), ranked first and second at the position respectively.
