What Miami is playing for -- and fans should root for -- in the regular season finale against Syracuse
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports Miami Insider
With Georgia Tech winning last week, the Yellow Jackets clinched an appearance in the ACC Championship Game and sealed Miami's continued streak of never winning the ACC, even in an outstanding season for the Hurricanes which have them ranked inside the top five for the first time since 2017.
It was in 2017 the last time Miami faced off against Syracuse and would enter the last week of the regular season with a chance to make a case to be the country's top ranked team before losing to Pittsburgh, on the road, and never recovering.
On top of avoiding another late season blunder, there's plenty for Miami to play for even with their conference championship aspirations dead and gone.
College Football Playoff Rankings
Look no further than Colorado and NC State with the Buffaloes dropping from No. 6 in the ranking to No. 14 with their loss to a ranked opponent in Kansas while NC State dropped all the way from No. 9 to No. 21 in the latest poll with their loss to Georgia Tech, effectively ending their playoff hopes.
Earlier in the year, Syracuse could be tucked away as a quality loss as they were once ranked but with the Orange dropping three of their last four games, including most recently to UConn, a loss to Syracuse would likely see a drop similar to NC State and could ultimately keep Miami out of the playoffs. The debate has already began about who exactly Miami has beaten with only one win over a currently ranked opponent in Florida State which if they lose to Florida, could see that win look less and less impressive.
Even if Miami still gets in with a loss to Syracuse, they'd be getting in as a lower seed and will have to go on the road in that first round. This is impactful on multiple fronts, including financially and in the world of NIL, that can't be understated. It's also a much tougher road to Atlanta if Miami has to go on the road against the likes of Texas A&M, Texas, or Michigan with 100,000+ people in the fans as opposed to the friendly confines of Hard Rock Stadium.
Award Considerations
Miami has three players as semi finalists for the Bednarik Award, given to the nation's best defensive player in linebacker Wesley Bissainthe, defensive end Reuben Bain Jr. and edge rusher Elijah Alston.
Safeties Mishael Powell and Jaden Harris are in consideration for the Thorpe while offensively, running back Damien Martinez is a semi-finalist for the Doak Walker Award.
This is the last week of the season and with the playoffs right around the corner, there likely will be extra set of eyes on CFP bound teams which is the perfect showcase opportunity for these semi-finalists to make one last convincing case to take home some hardware come February.
Individual milestones
It's a team sport but stats and performances get guys noticed by NFL scouts and raise the NIL value of others.
Damien Martinez needs 158 rushing yards to break the 1,000-yard mark which hasn't been done by a Miami running back since 2017. It's unlikely he does that in one game but he could eat a decent chunk of that against a Syracuse defense that will likely need to help out their secondary in pass coverage.
Junior receiver Sam Brown needs 46 receiving yards and redshirt junior Elijah Arroyo needs 84 receiving yards to eclipse 500 receiving yards, giving Miami three such pass catchers as they would join team leader Xavier Restrepo who leads the team with 59 receptions for 648 yards and five touchdowns.
The aforementioned Alston and Bain are also knocking on a big milestone with Alston being one sack shy of the 10-sack mark while Bain needs 1.5 sacks to reach that. Seniors Akheem Mesidor and Marley Cook each need a sack to reach five sacks.
A good ole fashion belt to ass beatdown
This ties into all of the previous things to play for and root for but also stands on its own. Miami, while impressive, hasn't always been dominant this season with their double-digit margin of victories coming against 7-4 Virginia Tech, 4-7 California, 5-6 Duke, 3-8 Georgia Tech and 4-7 Wake Forest.
A dominant win against the Syracuse would be Miami's second best win on their schedule, trailing only their three point home win over rival Florida State in October. They'll be in a dome and Syracuse isn't exactly a tough place to play but it'll still be impressive for the Hurricanes to navigate through an ACC season and finish it off with a post-Thanksgiving road trip against a team that has looked formidable at times this year.
The last time Miami played in Syracuse was in 2002 when they beat them 49-7, two games before that controversial finish in the desert against Ohio State in the National Championship Game. Is this team more 2002 -- perhaps with a better ending -- or more like the 2017 team that imploded in December?

Miami adds another stud defender in IMG Academy's LaMarcus 'Man Man' Cook
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports Miami Insider
The University of Miami isn't done on the recruiting trail, adding four-star safety LaMarcus Cook to their recruiting class which currently ranks third behind Georgia and Notre Dame. Cook is part of an impressive safety duo at IMG Academy in Bradenton that features two elite players in Cook and Denzel Major, who committed to Alabama over Miami back in October.
The Panama City native, who also goes by 'Man Man', is an instinctive player that cracked IMG's defensive back rotation as a sophomore before emerging as one of their better players this year. He's not going to wow scouts with his testing numbers but he's a good enough athlete who makes it up with his physicality and sound coverage skills for a bigger safety at 213 pounds.
Cook's aggressiveness can sometimes get the better of him in terms of being handsy in coverage and also taking risks when it comes to jumping routes or coming downhill in run support and being susceptible to bigger plays down the field. Miami likes him at safety but like a lot of other guys in the class, he does bring positional versatility in terms of being to also play that big nickel role in certain situations and a move to linebacker not out of the picture either which is what he primarily played at the youth level.

Miami's Cam Ward sets school record with seven touchdown passes in blowout win over Orange
Through one half, Miami quarterback Cam Ward had already eclipsed his season averages with 268 yards passing, three touchdowns and completing 80 percent of his passes with his first pass of the game going for a touchdown.
"He's been selfless this entire season," said head coach Mario Cristobal of Ward after the game, "He's done what we've asked of him and more and just really glad that he's our starting quarterback."
Ward hasn't put up the video game numbers that many expected him to but has led Miami to an eleven win season and on Saturday, he got a chance to air it out in Miami's final game of the regular season, throwing for a school record seven touchdowns in the 55-20 win over Syracuse on Saturday. Ward finished the game 40 of 52 for 512 passing yards, the second most in school history behind Stephen Morris' 566 yards against NC State.
The game was a rout from the beginning with Syracuse turning the ball over on a fumble forced by true freshman Justin Scott on the third play of the game which resulted in a 23-yard touchdown to Xavier Restrepo on Miami's first play from scrimmage. Syracuse would turn the ball over four more times, leading to fourteen points with a Mark Fletcher 22-yard touchdown pass from Ward, a Ray Ray Joseph three-yard touchdown from Ward.
It was also a big day for Restrepo who caught four touchdown passes, a school record. Ray Ray Joseph caught a career high two touchdowns while Elijah Arroyo eclipsed 100 receiving yards for the first time in his career.
Even amidst the passing explosion, Miami still rushed for 180 yards, totaling nearly seven hundred yards of total offense in what was their most dominant performance of the season. Syracuse Kyle McCord's was able to find some success once the game got out of hand, throwing for 358 yards but threw two interceptions.

An early preview at potential opponents for Miami in the College Football Playoffs
Manny Ledo -- The Miami Herald Sports Columnist
The Miami Hurricanes are all but guaranteed a spot in the College Football Playoffs after the team's dominant win over Syracuse and Alabama dropping to Auburn, pushing the Hurricanes into the top three for the first time since 2017.
As the rankings currently stand, Miami would be the sixth seed as the top four seeds are reserved for conference champions with Clemson playing Georgia Tech in the ACC Championship Game. The Yellow Jackets lost in the regular season finale, essentially making this a de-facto playoff game for them as with a loss to Clemson, they are likely out altogether while the Tigers could still make the playoffs even with a loss due to their high ranking.
If the season were to end today, Miami would play Penn State at home in the first round but let's look at some other alternatives.
If Boston College loses to Clemson
This is a very likely outcome and what Las Vegas is predicting will happen as the Tigers are frankly a better team than the Eagles that have dropped three games this season already.
A one-win Clemson would likely slide into the two seed and push Miami into the top non-champion seed, which is currently projected to play the only Non-P4 opponent in the first round, Texas State. This would be the ideal scenario for the Hurricanes as they avoid the likes of Michigan, Penn State or Texas A&M in the first round and get to play a home game as well.
Not only does this help their chances of getting out of the first round, as the top seeded non-champion, the Hurricanes would also play -- with a win -- the lowest ranked champion in the second round which could be Utah instead of Oregon, Alabama or Clemson.
An Oregon, Utah loss could change everything
Even with a loss, the Ducks still make the playoffs and then it's a matter of where are they slotted. The ripple effect of that however is that now a four-loss USC jumps into the picture as a top four seed which becomes a potential opponent for Miami in the second round, another favorable matchup for the Hurricanes compared to the field.
However, the question becomes just how far does Oregon drop in the rankings. Do they drop to the fifth seed, keeping Miami put at six? What if Colorado also wins against Utah, does Utah get slotted ahead of Miami and push Miami into a seventh seed where they would play Florida State, at home, in the first round?
Beware of the sleeping Dawgs
It will take a lot, and that's an understatement, but it's not out of the possibility that four-loss Georgia, which is still one of the more talented teams in the country, find a way to sneak into the playoffs.
The committee put them at thirteen for a reason, jumping seven spots from the previous week. They are now within striking range of that top twelve ranking, with seven slots available for non-champions.
The first domino that would need to fall is for Clemson to knock out Boston College, elevating them into an automatic qualifier which would likely knock out Boston College entirely. Texas A&M and Alabama will sort each other with the loser likely being out as A&M already has two losses on the season and the Tide would be coming off back-to-back losses.
As long as Utah takes care of the business against Colorado and Oregon does not drop to USC, it's hard to see a case being made that Georgia wouldn't jump up at least four spots in the rankings with Boston College out, either A&M or Alabama out as well as Colorado.
What does this mean for Miami? Georgia would be a potential opponent for Miami, depending on where the final ranking puts Miami and Georgia. A likely ranking for both teams would be Miami at six and Georgia at eleven, pitting them against each other in the first round. While Miami has the better record, Georgia's roster is more talented and the type of team that could give Miami problems, similar to Michigan, with a physical defense to stop the running game and a ball control offense capable of neutralizing Miami's pass rush.

Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders wins Heisman Trophy
Jessica West -- SI.com
In a season for the ages, Shedeur Sanders has been awarded the prestigious Heisman Trophy, cementing his place in college football history. The Colorado Buffaloes’ star quarterback dazzled fans and critics alike, throwing for an impressive 4,014 yards, 40 touchdowns, and just four interceptions. His stellar performance not only earned him the Heisman but also propelled Colorado to a Big 12 Championship.
Dillon Gabriel of Oklahoma finished second in the Heisman voting, while Cade Klubnik of Clemson took third. Both quarterbacks had outstanding seasons, but it was Sanders’ remarkable efficiency and ability to carry his team stood out.
Colorado’s success this season has been a team effort, but there’s no denying that Sanders has been the driving force behind their achievements. As the Buffaloes prepare for the College Football Playoffs, they will face the winner of the Penn State vs. Michigan matchup.
