Beavers Fight Valiantly, But Can't Overcome Big Brother Oregon
Ricky McKinley // Dam DailyPublished: October 16th, 2026

The Oregon Ducks may have avoided being charred and plated by their little brother, the Oregon State Beavers, in this contest. But the margin of victory wasn't nearly the belt-to-ass blowout many expected nationally. For a game that many - myself included - thought would be a bloodbath, our boys buckled their chin-strap and went toe-to-toe with the Ducks in an eventual 23-7 loss during a steady downpour of rain.

I'll admit, when I watched the Ducks march their opening possession 80 yards in 12 plays—after our own was a meager three-and-out—moving with surgical-like precision, I figured it was wraps. But as the field shrank, so did the running lanes. We buried Jordan Davison for a four-yard loss, then stuffed the screen pass on the next play and suddenly, the Ducks field goal unit was trotting out.

The Ducks' next two drives followed the same pattern. Slow, methodical, content to take what was given and not what they wanted. However, despite reaching plus territory twice more in the 1st half, sacks on 3rd down pushed Oregon out of field goal range. We were bending, but we weren't breaking this time.

Oregon's defense was forcing the same frustration for our offense, however, as a pair of promising drives were each stifled, forcing Logan McCreery onto the field to attempt 52- and 53-yard field goals. He would miss both, leaving the Ducks leading 3-0 going into the break.

When asked what the hometown Beavers needed to do in the second half as he jogged off the field, head coach Jonathan Smith didn't sugarcoat it. "We need points and we need them soon. We can't expect our defense to hold the line without any support, we owe them that much."

The Ducks' first drive of the second half played like it was a re-run from the first-half. Another surgical drive as they methodically marched down the field, but once again, the Beaver- were able to make one play to disrupt the momentum. Linebacker Hasson Manning Jr, who had one of the earlier drive-killing sacks, leveled Justius Lowe to break up the first down reception.

Another promising drive, another field goal. The defense was doing its part. The offense would continue failing at picking up the slack.

The Beavers' offense was forced into another quick three and out, then the dagger came. On his only carry of the game, backup HB Jay Harris slashed through the Oregon State defense for 51-yards, leaving Harlem Howard stumbling after a quick cut, to spark the Ducks offense, One play later and Makhi Hughes plunged in from two yards out and the Ducks had their first touchdown, and a 13-point lead.

Oregon's Makhi Hughes would nab his second touchdown in the 4th quarter, stretching the lead to 20-0, before Gutridge and the Beavers offense finally put in some work, with Gutridge finding Zachary Card for a 4-yard score.

Trailing 20-7 with just 4:25 left, HC Jonathan Smith opted for the onside kick to try and steal a possession, hoping for a miracle. Instead, Oregon recovered, drove within field goal range, and laced the uprights for a 23-7 final score.

During the post-game press conference DC Armando Leon praised his team's effort, but pushed back on the idea of morale victories:

•••

Question One - Danny Marks (CW Sports): "Coach, many pundits nationally had this earmarked as a more lopsided Oregon victory. Is your team taking any 'morale victories' from competing at a high level against a Ducks team that has championship expectations this year?"

Armando Leon: "Not at all, Danny. We came in here with a game plan to win, not a close loss. Is it encouraging to play a team the caliber of Oregon so tightly? Absolutely, and we're going to make sure we acknowledge the effort and passion from the team. But the end of the day, the standard we're trying to build isn't to be good enough to compete with these guys. It's to be these guys. But to be the man, you gota beat the man. We're encouraged, but not content, Danny."

Question Two - John Evans (DuckTerritory): "Coach, with how strong of a defensive effort your unit put forth in this game, how frustrating is it that the offense didn't do its part-?"

Armando Leon: Leon interrupts John Evans' question "Is that a serious question, John? This is a team game. We lose as a team, and we win as a team. We all have areas we need to work on so that the next time we take the field, we win as a team. Next question."

Question Three - Olivia LeRusso (Oregonlive): "Last question Coach, it looked like outside of a few big plays, Noah Fifita and the Ducks were methodical with moving the ball, taking the underneath throws and leaning on the run game to the tune of 183 rushing yards. Do you think the weather played a factor in their less-than-aggressive passing game, or was it your defensive game plan?"

Armando Leon: "I'm sure the weather definitely played a factor, Olivia. They only took two real deep shots, but both balls didn't have enough juice on them. That's not a knock on Noah, just the facts. But this was also our game plan. Keep them in front of us, make them earn every yard. That philosophy worked as the field shrank, we were able to notch a pair of sacks to knock them out of field goal range in the 1st half, and finished with eleven tackles for loss and those two sacks.

I would like to point out, you mentioned 183 rushing yards total. But if you take the 51-yard run from Harris and the 37-yard run from Davison away, they only tallied 95 rushing yards against us. We've preached limiting big plays all season and it's just another example of how even two of them can flip a game on its head. Like I said before, we're encouraged with the progress, but hungry for success."

•••

Listen, Coach won't say it, but I will. You can't not be excited about this team going forward. I will be honest, I thought it was going to be another Red Raiders massacre out there. This may be one of the only times in my life that I'm happy to be wrong.

We went toe-to-toe with one of the premier teams in college football, a roster literally LITTERED with five-star recruits. And, I would like to point out, this is only our second loss of the season. We're still 4-2 with a full slate of conference games ahead of us.

Watch out Pac-12, 'cause if today's game is any indication, we're coming for the #1 spot. Not next year, not in the future. THIS YEAR.

quack quack MF.

Offense really didn’t help you in that one. Holding Oregon to 23 is good but your defense.

This offense is killing me. But slightly my fault for not going after a transfer portal QB harder once Akili Smith Jr spurned me :barneydead:

2026 Week Eight Preview - Oregon State (4-2) @ Texas State (4-3)
Ricky McKinley // Dam DailyPublished: October 23rd, 2026

The Oregon State Beavers are packing their bags once again, this time moseying on down to San Marcos, Texas to face off against the red-hot Texas State Bobcats, winners of four in a row.

While our beloved Beavs had their own three-game winning streak snapped against arch-rival Oregon last week, we're in good spirits here in Corvallis. A win would have been nice, but an arduous climb makes the view from the top that much sweeter. It was a far cry from the 41-7 thrashing we received from big brother a year ago, signaling that while we're still working ourselves to the bone, success may be right around the corner.

Before we get to another segment of "Leon's Lowdown", let's take a gander at how we stack up with our newest Pac-12 conference foe.

4th Down Stand Thwarts Texas State's Potential Game-Winning Drive
Ricky McKinley // Dam DailyPublished: October 24th, 2026

Over the course of the week leading up to the Oregon State Beavers showdown with the Texas State Bobcats, the talk was about the speed of the Bobcats wide receiving corps.

Well, Coach Mando said we got shooters for your shooters! After saying the Beavers would run Cover 4 most of the night, Coach Mando flipped the script and played press-man for a majority of the night. Texas State didn't back down and while they hit on a pair of big touchdowns in the 4th quarter, specifically a 70-yard bomb to Beau Sparks and a 52-yard heave to Tyler King, it was the Beavers who drilled the final blow in the 32-27 contest.

The Texas State offense faced 4th-and-short twice in this contest, once in the 1st quarter and again on the potential game-winning drive. Both times, they put the ball in QB Brad Jackson's hands on the option. Both times Jackson kept and both times the Beavers rallied. In the 1st Q it was FS Jason Mitchell who stayed sound, squared himself up, and wrapped up Jackson for the TFL and turnover on downs.

But in the 4th-quarter, game on the line, it was former Air Force Falcon Kyle Chen who shot the gap and stood up Jackson for the stop.

"They'd run the same play to the other side earlier in the game," dissected Kyle Chen after the game, "When they came out in the same formation, just with the HB flipped to Jackson's non-throwing side, we knew the play. I told Jalen to watch the back, 'cause I got #9."

Texas State came in with the top ranked offense in the Pac-12 and while they still got theirs with 361 passing yards and 90 rushing yards, the Beavers defense came up with key stops when they needed them that proved to be the difference. 17 tackles for loss, a sack, and two fourth-down stops. That's a good day at the office, however you want to slice it. Add in the win moving the Beavers to 5-2, and there's reason to celebrate.

•••

Question One: Mick Lancing (The University Star): "Coach, you mentioned in the lead-up to this showdown that you anticipated running more Cover 4 to account for the Bobcats speed out wide. When the teams took the field, however, you ran Cover 2 press-man for the majority of the game. Was this a last-second change of heart, or some gamesmanship in the media?

Armando Leon: "A little bit of both, to tell you the truth, Mick. We planned on running more Cover 4, if the boys at corner had problems. But aside from a few big plays, we went bar-for-bar with them. Sailasa had more than a few batted passes, so did Noble and Exodus dropped a pick when he cut a curl route. When you're playing a team as explosive as Texas State, you can't expect to limit every big play. You just need to make sure you get enough on your own to end up with the W."

Question Two: Chip Swarley (CW Sports): "Beau Sparks and Tyler King each had a pair of explosive catches in the 4th quarter. What happened in coverage that allowed them to be that wide-open?"

Armando Leon: "Again, you can't expect to stop every big play. Both of the touchdowns came on third down. Sparks' was on 3rd-and-7, King's 3rd-and-3. We gambled and sent the safety blitz, leaving our guys mano a mano on the outside. Both receivers did a great job using inside leverage to gain separation, and hats off to Brad Jackson 'cause they were both dimes. If he places that ball anywhere else, it's at worst a PBU. Those are the type of plays you sometimes have to live with playing an aggressive, man-coverage defense."

Question Three: Olivia LeRusso (Oregonlive): "Last one, Coach. How beneficial is it for you as a play-caller when your own offense is cooking like they were today? Does that affect how you call the game, or do you coach in a vacuum?"

Armando Leon: "Both, Olivia. I try to coach my game, regardless of how our own offense is doing. But when our boys are cooking like they were today? It allows us to play a little more aggressively, with the knowledge that one mistake isn't going to sink us. We gave up the last touchdown to Texas State with 4:25 to go and that cut it to a two-point differential at 29-27. If they only ran clock on our offenses final possession, we're talking about a different game, 'cause Texas State would have kicked a makable 43-yard field goal. Instead, Gutridge made some gutsy throws, and we got a field goal, making it touchdown or bust for the Bobcats. I've preached it's a team game all year, and in this one? We won as a team."

•••

Love Coach Mando giving credit where it is due with the offense. Without Allah's 200 rushing yards and Gutridge's 3 touchdowns, the defense doesn't have the ability to get exotic with their blitz packages, or take the risk of man-coverage. The team is working as a cohesive unit right now and that's all you want from a team on the rise.

For a team that seemed rudderless during last year's 2-10 season, the Beavers are suddenly playing complementary football and are thriving. It's still early; it's only Texas State, but it just feels different this year, y'know?

I'm going to keep singing this team's praises until the wheels fall off. #GOBEAVS.

2026 Week Nine Preview - Utah State (1-6) @ Oregon State (5-2)
Ricky McKinley // Dam DailyPublished: October 30th, 2026

The Oregon State Beavers head back to Reser Stadium to face the slumping Utah State Aggies, hoping that their Halloween matchup doesn't bring anything spooky their way. Despite some late fireworks, the Beavers were able to hold off the Bobcats in San Marcos, bringing their record to a sparkling 5-2.

While they went into San Marcos and faced arguably the hottest team in the Pac-12—with the Bobcats riding a 4-game winning streak—now they host a team on a frigid run.

After winning their debut against FCS Weber State, the Aggies have dropped six straight contests and rank in the bottom quarter nationally in nearly every statistical category.

Here is a quick look at how our Beavers stack up statistically with the Aggies before we get to your favorite segment, "Leon's Lowdown."

Leon's Lowdown

RM: "Welcome back to the PNW, Coach. Hope Texas treated you well, aside from the win. With this matchup against the Aggies falling on Halloween, what kind of sinister blitz packages are you cooking up for one of the worst offenses in the country?"

AL: "Woah, there Ricky. Just 'cause they're ranked towards the bottom half of the league, doesn't mean they don't have talent. These guys are still D1 athletes. Overlooking opponents is a good way to get clocked in your own house. Fortunately for us, they'll be without their top offensive player in HB Derrick Jameson, so we can really get aggressive with our packages to try to throw CJ off balance, knowing they'll be relying on the passing game."

RM: "What do you say to the critics who question the overall productivity of your defense seven games in, specifically after giving up over 400 yards to the Bobcats last week?"

AL: "I'd implore them to look at the stats, Ricky. We're top 50 in both yards per game and points allowed per game, tied for 15th nationally in sacks, and lead the nation in tackles for loss. But, most importantly, we're 5-2 after a brutal 2-10 campaign last year. Stats are great tools, but they don't tell the full story. We've given up some big plays, specifically a pair of long touchdowns last week, but in the grand scheme of things, we get ours more than we get got. Period."

RM: "Love the Marshawn Lynch quote! Let's look ahead a bit, Coach. Sitting at 5-2, I'd say it's pretty safe to assume the Beavers are going bowling this year. What does that mean for this program after the last two years?"

AL: "That's the goal, Ricky. Get those bowl games, get more exposure, and build the brand. But first things first, we're aiming to win the Pac-12 in the first year of the new-look Pac."

I get respecting an opponent, not giving them bulletin board material. But these Aggies are ICE cold. I'm not saying they aren't going to get some big plays, we've developed a penchant for giving up at least a pair of them each game, but overall, I think this is a game the Beavers walk through.

This has trap game written all over it, but with the mindset Coach Leon has brought to this team, I don't see that happening.

Beavers 38, Aggies 10. #BuildtheDam.
