Eni / Caqui

Saul pushed the grocery cart behind Ava as she worked through a list on her phone, her thumb scrolling between items. She pulled a jar of pasta sauce off the shelf and tossed it into the basket without looking back, then a box of rice, then a bag of shredded cheese, each one landing on top of the last until the pile shifted and the jar tilted against the side of the cart.

Saul reached in and reorganized, stacking the heavier items along the bottom and sliding the rest to one side to give her more room. Ava was already three steps ahead of him, her eyes back on her phone, her free hand pulling a can of diced tomatoes from the shelf and adding it to the pile he had just sorted.

"You close with Andrew?" He kept his grip on the cart handle, his eyes on the back of her head. "Like close close?"

Ava kept her eyes on the shelves. "No closer than I am with any of my other friends. You have nothing to be jealous about."

Saul nodded to himself and pushed the cart forward as she moved down the aisle, the wheels rattling over a seam in the tile. He let a few steps pass before he spoke again. "I was talking to one of my coworkers, uh, Katie."

Ava looked back at him, one eyebrow up. "Katie?"

"Yeah, she works in the permit office for Methanex."

Ava shrugged, her eyes moving back to the shelves. "Okay, Katie then."

They turned the corner into the next aisle, Saul angling the cart wide to keep it from clipping the endcap. A woman with a toddler in the seat of her cart came from the other direction and Ava stepped to one side to let her pass, her back pressing against the shelf for a second before she pushed off and kept walking. She stopped in front of the pasta section, her fingers running across the boxes until she found the one she wanted.

"She's always in there flirting and shit with all of the guys then I found out she's married."

Ava pulled a pack of spaghetti noodles down and turned the box over, reading the label. She looked up at Saul. "So, Katie's a piece of shit who is cheating on her husband."

Saul shook his head. "Nah, that's the thing. She said he's cool with it."

"Her husband is okay with her messing around behind his back."

"That's what she said. Said he likes it."

Ava's mouth pulled to one side and she set the spaghetti in the cart, sliding it flat against the cans along the bottom. "That's fucking disgusting. Why would you want someone that you're with to hook up with other people?"

Saul shrugged, his hands settling back onto the handle. "I don't know. You'd have to ask her that I guess."

Ava turned back to the shelves and grabbed a second box of spaghetti, checked the label against the first, and put it back on the shelf. She started walking again, her steps light on the tile. She pulled her phone from her pocket and scrolled once, checking the next item on the list.

"I hope you're not bringing that up because you want to do some weird shit like that."

"Fuck no. I just thought it was weird, but clearly all the guys are cool with it on the site because she's entertaining them or whatever."

Ava nodded as she kept walking. She slowed in front of the canned vegetables and pulled two cans of corn off the shelf, setting them into the cart one at a time. She looked back at him. "Is she hot?"

Saul blinked. "What?"

"Is she hot? I figure that doesn't work if you're ugly."

"Yeah, she's alright I guess."

"You guess."

"Yeah."

Ava stopped. She turned around and put her hands on either side of the cart, her fingers curling over the metal edge, her weight settling between her arms so the cart pushed back an inch against Saul's grip. "You better not cheat on me, Saul."

"I ain't."

"And I'm not doing anything with Andrew since that was your roundabout way to see if I was."

"No, I—"

"I wouldn't do that to you."

Saul closed his mouth. "My bad."

Ava held his eyes for another second, her fingers still pressed into the metal of the cart. Then she let go and turned back around, pulling her phone up from her pocket. "C'mon. We gotta get back before the LSU game comes on."

She started walking. Saul pushed the cart after her, the front wheel catching on a crack in the tile before straightening out. They passed the baking aisle and the cleaning supplies without stopping, Ava checking her phone once more and sliding it back into her pocket.

She was already at the end of the row by the time Saul caught up, pulling a can of black beans off the shelf as she passed it, tossing it over her shoulder into the cart without breaking stride.

Ramon came up the stairs to Tyree's apartment two at a time, his hand catching the rail once on the turn before he let it go and crossed the landing. He slammed his fist against the front door hard enough to rattle the hinges. "Come open this fucking door, nigga!"

He hit it again, then again, the side of his fist flat against the wood, the blows landing in quick succession that carried down the breezeway. He kept banging until Tyree's voice came back from inside, muffled through the door.

"I'm coming, bitch, damn."

The deadbolt turned and Tyree pulled the door open. Ramon pushed past him into the apartment.

A girl was sitting on the sofa in a PSD set, her legs tucked under her, her phone in her hand. She looked up at Ramon as he came through the door. Ramon looked back at Tyree, then at the girl. He walked over to the counter where a set of keys sat near the edge and picked them up, holding them toward her. "This yours?"

She looked at the keys. "Yeah."

Ramon threw them to her. "Get the fuck out."

She caught them against her chest and her eyes went to Tyree, who was still standing at the door with his hand on the frame. He pulled the door open wider and tipped his chin toward it. "I'm gonna text you after we done."

She sucked her teeth as she pushed up from the sofa and crossed the room in her bare feet, her phone gripped in one hand and the keys in the other. She stepped into her slides by the door, threw her hand in Tyree's face as she passed him, and walked out. Tyree watched her go, then slammed the door behind her, the latch catching hard. He turned back to Ramon with his arms out at his sides.

"You ain't have to come over here like the fucking jakes."

Ramon walked further into the apartment and turned to face him, his back to the kitchen counter. "That's who gonna be on your ass for spinning on them 110 niggas. You been smiling and kekeing all in my face all week and ain't tell me you did that."

Tyree shrugged, his hands coming up at his sides. "You wasn't about that ride so I took it alone, niggas."

His hand swung toward Tyree. "You ain't even hit none of them niggas. And you took that green ass nigga Bakari with you? He ain't hit nothing neither."

Tyree sucked his teeth. "I can spin again if that's what it take."

Ramon shook his head. "Nah, you need to sit your wild ass down and let this shit simmer."

Tyree pointed at him, his finger cutting the air between them. "That's your bitch talking. Ain't you just get mad at E.J. for not being about that action?"

Ramon stepped forward, closing the distance between them until he was in Tyree's space, his chest square to Tyree's. "Watch your mouth, lil' bitch."

Tyree held his ground, his feet set, his chin lifting a fraction. His eyes locked on Ramon's face. He shook his head. "They don't even know who it was so it don't even matter."

"It's only a matter of time until they figure it out then we gonna be shooting it out in the fucking Quarter again."

"Ain't none of these would've happened if Duke wasn't slow walking everything talking about some fucking patience."

Ramon brought both hands up and pointed them at Tyree. "For a nigga who go to college, you fucking dumb as a bitch. I swear to fucking God, bruh."

Tyree's hands dropped to his sides and he took a half step back, his weight shifting off his front foot. "What Duke said?"

Ramon dropped his hands to his sides. He let a beat pass, his chest rising once on a breath before he spoke. "Nothing. I fixed it. Like I always fucking do." He let that sit. "Next time, get your pussy ass out the car and walk them niggas down if you gonna do that shit."

Tyree held his hands up, palms open. "It was seven of them."

"You got more than seven bullets."

Tyree shook his head then he turned and walked to the door, pulling it open.

Ramon's head came up. "Where the fuck you going?"

Tyree looked back over his shoulder from the doorway. "Going see if Carresha still out there, nigga."

Ramon shook his head as Tyree walked out of the apartment, the door left open behind him, his footsteps carrying down the stairs until they faded out at the bottom.

Mireya had her back against Sena's front, her hips finding the beat and pressing into Sena's with each downstroke, the two of them moving together in the packed crowd. Bodies pressed close on every side, shoulders brushing shoulders, the bass pushing through the floor and up through their legs. Every few bars, Sena's hand went to the hem of the cropped top she was wearing, her fingers hooking the fabric and tugging it down where it had ridden up above her sternum.

Mireya turned around and slapped her hand, light, the contact quick against Sena's knuckles. "Stop that."

"You're not the one worried about flashing everyone in here."

Mireya smiled, her hands finding Sena's waist, her thumbs pressing into the skin between the top and the waistband of her jeans. "I tried to tell you how to get it to stay down but you ain't listen to me."

Sena rolled her eyes, her fingers still pinching the hem. "Yeah. Your stripper tactics didn't make sense. Strippers take their clothes off, not keep them on. Besides you're the fucking one who told me to wear this."

Mireya gestured around them at the women filling the bar, the dance floor, the booths against the far wall. "Yeah, because now every other bitch in here wants to fuck you."

"You're saying that like it's a good thing for you."

Mireya laughed, her body still swaying, her grip steady on Sena's waist. "It is, because I know I'm the one who will be. Boosts my fucking ego."

Sena shook her head, a smile breaking through despite the roll of her eyes. "C'mon. I gotta get drunk to keep up with you."

The two of them squeezed their way to the bar, Mireya leading with one hand behind her holding Sena's, cutting a path through the press of bodies until they reached the counter.

Andrea saw Sena from behind the bar and started making a Cosmo without asking, pulling bottles, working the shaker, straining the pour into a glass and sliding it across the bar top toward her. She looked at Mireya. "You want something?"

Mireya shook her head. "I'm good."

Andrea nodded and moved off to the next person flagging her down. Mireya leaned her hip against the bar and watched Sena bring the glass to her mouth, the pink liquid tilting against the rim as she took a sip. A smile pulled at the corner of Mireya's mouth.

Sena lowered the glass. "What?"

"You come to a lesbian bar enough that they just know what you drink and you refuse to come out. You're pretty fucking gay, Sena."

Sena's jaw tightened for a fraction of a second. "We're not talking about this right now."

Mireya held a hand up. "I'm just fucking with you, baby. But I ain't never been somewhere they knew my drink."

"Not even when you were stripping?"

Mireya shook her head. "I'd just drink whatever was bought for me. Don Julio, Casamigos, mostly."

Sena nodded to herself and brought the Cosmo back to her lips for another sip. Her eyes moved across the crowd over the rim of the glass, scanning the room, the faces, the bodies packed along the dance floor and the booths. Then her eyes stopped. The glass came down and her hand went still around the stem, her shoulders pulling back an inch.

Mireya caught the shift before Sena said anything. She turned and followed the line of Sena's gaze through the crowd until she found it. A woman across the room, looking back at them.

"Who's that?"

"Alex."

"Your ex? That Alex?"

Sena's thumb moved once along the stem of the glass. "I don't think I can call her that."

Mireya looked at the woman for another beat, her eyes taking her in from across the room. "She's not fine enough to act like she does."

"She gets a lot of attention."

Mireya shrugged, one shoulder lifting and dropping. Then she turned back to Sena. She reached over and took the Cosmo out of Sena's hand, her fingers closing around the glass and setting it on the bar behind her. Her hand came up to the side of Sena's neck, her palm warm against the skin, her fingers curling into the hair at the base of her head. She pulled Sena closer and kissed her.

Sena's body went soft against hers. Her hands came to Mireya's hips, her fingers pressing into her, her weight tipping forward into the kiss until Mireya was holding most of it. Mireya pulled back an inch, her forehead still against Sena's, her hand still on her neck.

"Say you mine."

Sena's eyes opened, slow, the lids heavy. She drew a breath that lifted her chest against Mireya's. "I'm yours."

Mireya smiled, close enough that Sena could feel the shape of it. She let her hand slide from Sena's neck to her shoulder, then looked back over her shoulder toward where Alex had been standing. She caught the back of her turning away, her body folding into the crowd until it swallowed her and she was gone.

Caine stood on the fairway with Garrison, Donovan and Julian, the four of them grouped between shots, clubs resting against legs or propped on the grass at their feet. The sun sat high and warm over the course, the light falling flat across the green in every direction. Autumn watched them from a golf cart nearby where she sat with Sasha. Vivienne and Nadine carried a conversation that drifted in pieces across the grass without reaching the men.

Donovan pointed his iron at Caine, the shaft angling between them. "You had a great game yesterday, son. You were slinging that ball around the field like a prime Randall Cunningham."

Caine tipped his chin. "Appreciate it. I ain't really happy with some of them missed throws, but we won so we move."

Garrison lined up his shot a few feet away, his feet finding their width, his hands adjusting on the grip. He looked over at Caine before he addressed the ball. "A man that is never satisfied is one that's going to reach the top of his profession. That's why these white boys from Holmby or the Palisades never make it. They aren't hungry enough."

Caine nodded. "We done played a few of them this season."

Julian shifted his weight and crossed his arms, a grin pulling at his mouth. "You know y'all still gonna lose to UCLA."

Caine looked at him, one eyebrow up. "You smoking fucking crack. If we beat Oregon and Michigan, them boys gonna be easy work."

"If, but y'all ain't."

"You getting on the field, bro? Or you talking from the stands?"

Julian held his hands up, , and Garrison and Donovan both laughed, Donovan's head shaking as his shoulders moved with it, Garrison's laugh coming out full with his weight rocking back on his heels before he struck the ball.

They walked back over to the carts. Garrison rested his club against the bag strapped to the back of the lead cart and pulled the towel off the handle to wipe his hands. Autumn leaned forward in the cart, her forearm resting on the edge of the roof, her eyes on her father as he approached.

"You're not being too tough on my man, are you, daddy?"

Garrison pointed back at Caine with the club. "This kid? I think he'll be alright with a little pressure from a couple old men trying to get under his skin."

Caine came up beside the cart, his hands resting at his sides. "Definitely can't be the worse I've come across."

Garrison laughed and slapped Caine on the shoulder, his palm landing flat against the muscle and staying for a second before he pulled it back. His eyes moved to Autumn and back to Caine, the grin holding. Autumn raised an eyebrow.

Sasha sucked her teeth from the passenger side, her head shaking once. She pushed herself out of the cart, her hand catching the roof bar as she swung her legs down and walked to the one behind it where Julian was loading his club into the bag strapped to the back. Vivienne and Nadine shifted to the second cart, Nadine saying something to Vivienne that made her wave her hand and laugh.

Autumn scooted over to the passenger side. Caine dropped into the driver's seat, his hands settling on the wheel, his foot finding the pedal. The cart rolled forward onto the path, the tires pressing into the grass where it met the concrete.

Autumn looked over at him, her body turned in the seat to face him. "Look at you getting along with my daddy and my uncle."

Caine smirked, his eyes on the path ahead. "You saying that shit like it's a bad thing."

"Based on your track record with meeting parents, I figured you wouldn't know what the fuck you were doing."

"What track record?"

Autumn laughed. "Exactly, nigga. My parents are a little different than some married white woman's and your baby mama's absentee mama."

Caine held one hand up. "I'm a fast learner. All we gotta do is keep talking about football. Shit easy."

Autumn rolled her eyes, her head tipping against the back of the seat. "That's just because Julian around. My daddy will start asking your political opinions soon enough."

Caine steered the cart around a bend in the path, the wheels turning over the concrete. "That's when I'm gonna tag you in."

Autumn shook her head. "I thought you had it."

Caine laughed, the cart rolling along the path toward the next hole, the fairway opening up on both sides of them, the sun pressing warm across both of them. "We supposed to be a team. The fuck you mean?"

Autumn leaned over and kissed him, quick, her lips catching the corner of his mouth before she pulled back. "Already saying you need me. I like that."

Caine snorted a laugh, his eyes cutting to her before they moved back to the path. "Shit went straight to your head."

Autumn looked over at him and winked, the smile sitting at the corners.

She's been to FOUR, FIVE sessions. This is why therapy doesn't work. People think you go twice and you're cured
That was not what I was referencing. There is a ton of people who use "i go to therapy" as an excuse, but then don't work on changing any of the reasons they need to go to therapy. Mireya is going to therapy, cool, but she isn't actively changing any of the activities that hindered her ability to have a better life. If anything, she's doubling them down on the side. I get she hasn't been to a lot of sessions, but therapy requires work and effort that it *does not appear* Mireya is putting in, atm.

Tyree spun the block and didn't hit shit?

Ramon gonna get stretched out when 110 doubles back and assumes he was with him since they potnas

Sarin / Ixtelolotli

Sena sat with her hands laced together between her knees, her weight settled forward on the couch so her spine curved away from the cushion behind her. Across the rug, Celia had her notebook open against her knee, pen uncapped, the tip resting at the margin of a fresh page. Her legs were crossed at the ankle, her free hand on the arm of the chair.

"I think I backed myself into a corner and I don't know how to get out of it."

Celia nodded. "What's the corner that you feel you're backed into?"

Sena's shoulders came up with a breath and settled back down on the exhale, her thumbs shifting against each other between her knees.

"I told my parents that I'm dating a boy named Rey. And I don't know why I did it. They were just always asking about me dating, especially my mom. My brothers are married. Now, Sophie is pregnant. I don't know. I just—"

"You wanted to feel included."

Sena sat back against the cushion, her palms settling flat on her thighs. She nodded once. Her eyes stayed on the carpet between her feet and the leg of Celia's chair.

"My brothers have always teased me about dating even though I had a couple boyfriends when I was in high school and stuff. Then I think my mom is worrying that I'm going to turn into a spinster and she just seems so disappointed in me."

"Do you think that she's disappointed in you for not dating or is that what you assume?"

Sena's right hand came to the edge of the cushion beside her thigh, her fingers curling over the lip of it. "Well, I am dating. She just doesn't know."

Celia nodded, the dip small. "Right, because you haven't come out to them."

"Yeah." Sena's hand left the cushion edge. "But the bigger problem is my dad. He's real traditional. He's expecting some boy to show up for dinner soon to properly meet my family."

Celia let a beat pass. "I'm sure you knew he would react that way before you said it. What were you hoping to achieve with giving them that information?"

Sena shrugged. "I don't know. I wanted them to know that people want me, too. Not just June and Tae."

"They have no reason to think that's not true anyway."

Sena's lips pressed together. Her thumbnail found the edge of her cuticle on her index finger and pressed, working a small ridge back and forth. "I guess. I just don't know what to do at this point."

"What do you want to do?"

Her thumbnail stopped. "Probably just say we broke up when I mentioned meeting my family to this fake person."

Celia's head moved a fraction to one side.. "Sena, your family isn't stupid. If you do that and then one day introduce them to Mireya, they will put two and two together that Rey and Mireya are the same person. You'd be risking damaging their opinion of Mireya before they even met her."

Sena's hand stilled in her lap.

"If." Her voice flattened. "If they meet her."

"You can't keep running from this forever. You can't fully live your life until you begin to live your truth. Your truth is that you are a woman who loves other women. That's part of who you are. At some point, you have to rip the bandaid off. Otherwise, it's going to begin to negatively impact your life."

Sena's eyes moved off Celia's face. They went across the carpet, past the near edge of the rug, and stopped on the closed door across the room. Her fingers pressed into the denim on her thigh, the knuckles going pale once before they eased.

"I'd say it already has."

Mireya sat in the leather chair with one ankle crossed over her knee, her hands resting on the armrests, her fingers loose against the ends of them, her weight settled deep in the back of the seat. Fernanda sat across from her with the portfolio open on her knee.

"I want to talk to you about identity and how it relates to your relationship with your children's father, Caine."

Mireya's eyebrow came up. "I don't see how one thing got anything to do with the other."

Fernanda offered a small smile, the corners of her mouth lifting once before they leveled. "I think they have a lot to do with one another. You've mentioned that your ex was gunned down in a supposed gang-related shooting and he sold drugs. You've also mentioned that Caine sold drugs and committed carjackings."

Mireya's fingers curled once against the end of the armrest and then opened. "Is this where you say that I'm a poor judge of men?"

Fernanda shook her head. "No. It's a trend and a pattern, but not an indictment. My point is that you also have that part of you. You, yourself, have engaged in criminal activity."

Mireya's ankle shifted on her knee, the top foot rocking forward and settling back. "Selling drugs and stealing people's cars and selling myself are hardly the same thing. I'm the worse person in that equation."

"Society will always judge women harsher. You're not wrong. But what I want to point out is that you, like Caine based on what you've told me, lead with the worst part of yourself. What you think is the worst part of yourself, I should say."

Mireya's chin dipped a fraction. "It's the part that most people will be disgusted by and throw me away for."

"Is that why you have a problem with Caine's girlfriend? She's not cut from the same cloth as the two of you, correct?"

Mireya shook her head. "She's some rich bitch from a two parent home. But that's not why I have a problem with her."

Fernanda's head tilted a fraction, the light shifting across one side of her face. "What is?"

Mireya's hand came off her calf. She set it back on the armrest, the heel of her palm pressing into the leather, her fingers wrapping over the edge. "Because she's better than me. That white woman in Georgia was, too, but she was married. That wasn't going anywhere. But Autumn, even if she was in my situation, wouldn't have done the things I've done."

Fernanda's pen lowered to the page. She made a short mark at the margin, the tip pressing there and lifting. "The things you're still doing even though you don't need to?"

Mireya nodded. "I'm good at it."

Fernanda let that sit. Her pen stayed against the page, her eyes on Mireya's face, the space between them held open. She let the silence do the work for a few seconds, her thumb pressing once against the barrel of the pen, before she spoke.

"Mireya, you said the same thing I said. Autumn wouldn't have done what you did in your situation. There is something to be said about having a mindset that, as we love to say here in New Orleans, teaches you how to make a dollar out of fifteen cents."

Mireya snorted a laugh.

Fernanda's mouth pulled into a smile for a beat before it settled back. "I believe this is how your trauma bond with Caine manifests. Why you can't let the sexual part of your relationship with him go. Your being a hustler is so ingrained into your identity that his criminal background matches and you look down on anyone who doesn't know what you or he or anyone else has had to go through. Does that make sense?"

Mireya's ankle uncrossed from her knee and both feet came to the carpet. Her hand left the armrest and went to her thigh, pressing flat against the denim above her knee.

"Sena doesn't have that background. She's probably never even gotten a parking ticket."

Fernanda's expression remained passive. "You cheat on Sena."

Mireya's hand went still on her thigh. "Right."

Caine crossed the living room to the front door and pulled it open. Tatum came through with his phone in one hand, already pocketing it as he stepped inside, his other hand catching the edge of the door behind him. Caine stepped aside to let him through, turned back toward the kitchen, his bare feet on the hardwood, then walked around the edge of the island.

He set his elbows on the island, his forearms flat against the stone, his weight leaning forward into them. "You must have gotten some good news if you couldn't tell me this over the phone."

Tatum held his hands at his sides, his keys still in one of them. "When do I not bring you good news, kid?"

He dropped the keys on the counter near the entrance to the kitchen, walked to the fridge, pulled it open, looked through the shelves for a beat, then grabbed a bottle of Pellegrino from the door. The fridge swung shut behind him. He twisted the cap off, the seal cracking under his thumb, set the cap on the counter next to his keys, then crossed to the island.

He leaned his hip against the edge of it, the bottle held loose at his side and pointed it at Caine. "You look at the Heisman odds after Saturday's game?"

Caine shook his head. "You know I ain't looking at that shit. Motherfuckers gonna give that shit to who they want to give it to even if that motherfucker don't deserve it."

Tatum brought the bottle to his mouth and took a short drink. "You're second. Behind that kid from Georgia, what's his fucking name?"

"Keys? The kid they ain't want me because they recruited and he from around there?"

Tatum shook his head. "Not the quarterback." He brought his free hand up and scratched the side of his chin with two fingers, his eyes narrowing. "Talyn Taylor. That's the fucker's name. A receiver."

"That'd be crazy if they give that shit to a Georgia receiver back-to-back."

"That's what I'm saying, but they haven't started letting agents vote yet." Tatum took another drink from the bottle then set it down on the island between them. He wiped the corner of his mouth with the back of his hand. "Anyway. My point is that if you win the Heisman, you get a $275,000 bonus from the collective."

Caine laughed. "Then I guess they ain't gonna be pushing me in the media."

"Good thing it's a win-win for them. But that's actually not what I came here to talk about when it comes to that little popularity contest."

Caine's eyebrow came up.

Tatum held up both hands. "I know you're not really thinking about what you're going to do at the end of the season, but it's only a matter of time until that becomes a right now decision and not a few months from now decision."

"All that shit depends on if we win the natty or not. I ain't leaving this bitch without one."

Tatum nodded once. He picked the bottle back up and turned it once in his hand, the water shifting inside the green glass. "Well, another bitch you might want to take into account is the blank check they'd give you if you were a Heisman winner and coming back to run it again."

"I wouldn't have shit to prove."

Tatum's head tilted a fraction. "Do you want to play for the Browns?"

"Fuck no. And I for damn sure don't want to live in shitty ass Cleveland."

Tatum's mouth pulled at one corner. He straightened off the island and pointed the neck of the bottle across the surface at Caine. "They're fucking one and five so that's plenty reason to figure out some other shit to prove."

"Don't even start talking about the shit until after we get back Saturday."

Tatum lowered the bottle to his side, the glass resting against his thigh, the condensation leaving a line on the fabric. "I wouldn't suggest that. Oregon at Autzen?"

Caine snorted a laugh. "We're fucking beating them boys."

Autumn walked up to the apartment door with a folder in her hand, the pages pressed flat between the covers. She knocked twice, stepped back, and settled her weight onto one hip, the folder resting against her thigh.

The door opened a few inches and Miles put his head through the gap. His eyes moved over her once, from her face down to the folder against her leg, then he reached his hand out through the opening.

Autumn pulled the folder up to her shoulder. "Nigga, you're supposed to give me this back after looking at it and I'm not going to stand out here on the fucking doorstep like a girl scout waiting for you to do that."

Miles kept his hand out. "Go wait in your car then."

"Open the fucking door, Miles. I ain't got time to play with you right now. I have to get back to campus."

His hand dropped and he adjusted his grip on the edge of the door. "You're the one playing, thinking your daddy sent you with some important shit to do."

Autumn stared at him, her mouth set, her hand tightening once on the folder behind her hip. Then she stepped forward and pushed the door open with the heel of her palm. Miles gave ground, his feet shuffling back on the floor as the door swung wide enough for her to come through. She walked past him and into the apartment, the hallway opening up ahead of her to the kitchen at the far end.

A woman came out of the kitchen, white, her hair pulled back from her face, her bare feet on the tile, headed toward the back of the apartment. She saw Autumn and her steps slowed, her weight catching for a beat on one foot, her eyes moving between Autumn and the doorway where Miles stood behind her. Then she kept walking, her pace picking back up, and turned the corner toward the bedroom.

Autumn laughed, her chin lifting, her eyes cutting from the empty hallway back to Miles. He had pushed the door shut behind her and stood with his arms at his sides, his weight back on one heel.

"I'm not worried about you fucking Becky in here, nigga. I always knew you were one of them."

Miles's chin came up. "One of them what?"

"You know what I mean."

She held the folder up between them, the edge of it aimed at his chest, the pages shifting inside the covers. "Can you look at this shit now that I know what you weren't letting me in for?"

Miles sucked his teeth and closed the distance in two steps, took the folder out of her hand, and walked past her into the dining area off the kitchen. He pulled a chair out from the table, dropped into it, and opened the folder flat on the surface in front of him.

Autumn followed him and stopped a few feet from the table, her arms crossing over her chest, her weight settling back onto one hip. She watched him turn the first page over and start on the next. His eyes moved down the text in short passes, his finger tracing a line once near the bottom of a paragraph before he turned to the next page. He turned another page, his eyes still down. "Her name's Demi, by the way. Not fucking Becky."

"They're all Becky to me. Where'd you find her? The IE?"

Miles shook his head, his eyes still on the page in front of him. "Irvine."

Autumn snorted a laugh. "Nigga, you're a God damn lie. She's from fucking Laguna Beach, isn't she?"

Miles shrugged, his eyes still on the page in front of him. He turned another page, scanned it, then flipped back to the one before and went over a line again. He closed the folder and pushed it across the table toward the far edge. He sat back in the chair and looked up at her.

"You shouldn't have a problem with it."

Autumn took a step closer to the table. She picked the folder up off the surface, checked the pages inside it once, then closed it against her hip. She held up one hand. "I don't have a problem with it. I just think it's funny."

Miles leaned back farther in the chair. "Funny how?"

"Because I know you tell her to call you nigga when y'all are fucking because you're mad Black women shoot you down."

Miles sucked his teeth, his head turning a fraction away from her before it came back. "That's a wild leap."

Autumn shrugged, turning to leave the apartment.

Mireya set Micaela down in the bassinet, her hands easing the weight off slow until the baby's back met the mattress pad. Micaela's eyes were closed, her mouth slack, her chest rising and falling in a small even rhythm under the blanket. Mireya slid her fingers free and straightened, watched for another two breaths, then crossed the room to the couch where Sara sat.

She lowered herself onto the cushion beside Sara, her hip settling against Sara's, and let her weight sink back into the seat. Camila lay on the floor in front of the television with a coloring book open in front of her, a crayon in her fist. Her eyes moved between the screen and the page, her head lifting to the cartoon for a few seconds before it dropped back to the book and her hand started moving again.

Sara's hand came up and ran over Mireya's hair, her palm smoothing the strands back from her temple and following them down past her ear to where they fell against her neck. "How are you doing with everything now, mija?"

Mireya shrugged, her shoulder lifting against Sara's arm. "It's the same shit as when Camila was little. I just have to watch two of them instead of one."

Sara looked over at Camila. Camila's eyes came up from the coloring book to the screen, held on the cartoon for a moment, then dropped back to the page. Her crayon found a new spot and started filling it in. Sara's hand settled on the back of Mireya's head, her fingers resting against the hair. "It's a good thing Camila is such a good baby, too."

Mireya smiled. "Yeah, she never gives us any problems. A real little trooper."

"She knows you need help."

Mireya pulled her legs up onto the couch, tucking them under herself, her body turning a fraction toward Sara. "Hasta que la traigamos de vuelta de Los Ángeles, se desatará el caos durante unos días."

Sara nodded. "Ella quiere mucho a su papá."

"I'm lucky I still got Mica on my side."

Sara laughed. Her hand moved once more through Mireya's hair, her fingers combing through the length of it. "She's got your mannerisms already. When she's upset? Her face looks the same as yours."

Mireya rolled her eyes. "It doesn't."

"If you think so. Copy, paste, mija."

Mireya shook her head. The corner of her mouth pulled, a smile working at the edges.

Sara's hand came down from Mireya's hair and rested on her own knee. "Are you still working?"

Mireya's eyes moved to the floor where Camila lay with the coloring book then brought her eyes back to Sara's face.

"No quiero mentirte, mami."

Sara pressed her lips flat. She nodded once, her hand tightening on her own knee before it eased. "Bueno. I'm not going to pretend I'm not sad to hear that but I don't know what you get out of it."

Mireya let a beat pass between them. "When you were growing up, what did you want to be? Like if you could be what you wanted when you were Camila's age."

Sara's posture shifted, her shoulders easing back against the couch. "A dressage rider. You know, one of those people who ride the horses and make them prance around all over the place."

Mireya's eyebrow came up. "Are you serious?"

Sara nodded. "You said if I was going by when I was five."

Mireya looked at her for a beat, the eyebrow still up, then let it drop. "You know what I wanted to be? Before I wanted to be a nurse?"

Sara shook her head.

"A fighter pilot. After I saw that movie with Jessica Biel, Stealth."

Sara's hand came to Mireya's knee. "You could've done that."

Mireya looked down at Sara's hand on her knee. Her own hand came off the cushion and slipped under Sara’s. "Not when Maria found out. She made sure I stopped aiming that high. That's why I can't let go of things I'm good at."

Sara's arm came up around Mireya's shoulders. She pulled her in, drawing her across the cushion until their hips pressed together and Mireya's side met hers. Mireya let her body go with it, her head tipping until it found the curve of Sara's shoulder. Sara pressed her lips to the top of Mireya's head and held them against the hair.

"Lo siento, mija."

Caine pushed through the doors of the McKay Center and crossed the lot toward his Lexus, his gym bag hanging off one shoulder. Most of the cars that had been there when he'd gone in were gone, the spaces on either side of his open. He shifted the bag higher on his shoulder, pulled his keys from his pocket, and hit the unlock.

He got to the car, pulled the door open, tossed the bag across to the passenger seat, and dropped in. He pulled the door shut. He was reaching for the ignition when his phone rang in his pocket.

He pulled it out and looked at the screen. Ramon.

He answered. "What's good?"

"You got a minute, brudda?"

Caine settled back into the seat, his free hand going to the steering wheel and resting at the bottom of the arc. "Yeah, I'm just heading home."

"I need you to let me hold a couple thousand dollars."

"For what?"

"Tyree wrecked his car and needs some help to get the transmission fixed. You know how that goes. He got the shit fixed, but the mechanic is asking for a tip so we want to give him one."

Caine nodded to himself. His hand stayed on the wheel, his eyes on the windshield.

"I gotcha. I'll cash app it to you when I get back to the penthouse. Y'all got someone to look at the shocks and struts?"

"I am. When he gets it back from the shop, I'll head over there and see if anything else needs to be fucked with."

"Cool. Let me know if y'all need something else or if y'all can't figure out how to drive that shit after everything is done."

"We should be good by the end of the week, if not next week."

"Bet."

Ramon let a beat pass on the other end of the line before he spoke again. "Say, brudda. Before you go. You know anyone out there that's selling coconut pies? My mama been looking for some ever since she went to Atlanta."

"I don't but I know some people who probably know someone."

"Bet. Send them my info, my nigga. Let them know we'll come out there and pick them up."

"I'll let you know when I talk to 'em."

"Appreciate it, brudda."

The line cut. Caine pulled the phone from his ear then tossed it on the passenger seat next to his bag. He put the key in the ignition. The engine turned over, the dash lighting up across the console. He checked the mirror once, put it in reverse, backed out of the space.

Caine getting involved in selling drugs again :kghah:

Ramon gonna get caught crossing state lines with some work and go out in a hail of bullets to avoid going back?

At least someone is finally around to call Mireya out on her bullshit

Hope Fernanda knows what she's getting herself into, because that mind is a bag full of cats over there :obama:

Caine losing the Heisman race to a Georgia receiver would be something

Introducing someone to someone is hardly selling drugs.
