Starting Over

Cam still felt the buzz from UTSA’s biggest win in years. Taking down Texas A&M had lit up the city and his phone. Messages flooded in, from congratulations to NIL pitches. One stood out: a local jiu-jitsu gym offering six weeks of free training in exchange for a few social media posts. Curious, he agreed to give it a shot, even though the closest he'd been to combat sports was a lineman trying to pancake him in the pocket.

A few days later, Cam arrived at the studio, a modest setup tucked into a strip mall. The neon "Open" sign flickered as he hesitated before pushing the door open. Inside, the faint smell of mats and disinfectant mixed with a welcoming warmth.

“Hey, you must be Cam,” a voice called out. Turning, he met Kayla, the gym's owner and instructor. She was striking—confident and approachable, her dark hair tied back, a gi slung over one shoulder. Though she looked a few years older than him, Cam felt at ease right away.

“Nice to meet you,” he said, extending a hand. “Thanks for having me.”

“Of course,” she replied with a smile. “Let’s go over the details real quick.”

They sat at a small table near the front, where Kayla explained the basics of the NIL deal. Free classes in exchange for a few posts on his Instagram—nothing too complicated. “You’ll learn self-defense, build strength, and maybe even surprise some defenders if you ever need to stiff-arm,” she joked, prompting a chuckle from Cam.

When the paperwork was done, Kayla led him to the mats. “So, what do you know about jiu-jitsu?” she asked.

“Not much,” he admitted, scratching the back of his neck. “I know it’s… on the ground?”

She laughed. “That’s a start. Don’t worry, we’ll keep it simple today.”

As they chatted, the conversation turned to football. Kayla was easy to talk to, and Cam found himself opening up about the season, the pressures of being a quarterback, and the thrill of the A&M game. She shared stories about running the gym, her years in martial arts, and her life in San Antonio.

Their rapport was interrupted by the sound of small footsteps. A girl, maybe seven or eight, bounded onto the mats.

“Mom! Can we—oh, sorry!” the girl said, stopping abruptly when she saw Cam.

“It’s okay, honey,” Kayla said, crouching to her daughter’s level. “This is Cam. He’s starting lessons here.”

The girl smiled shyly before retreating to a corner with a book. Kayla stood and turned back to Cam, a flicker of apology in her eyes. “It’s just the two of us most of the time, so she’s usually here when I’m teaching.”

“No need to apologize,” Cam said quickly. “It’s always been me and my mom, so… I get it.”

Kayla’s face softened. “Really?” she said, her tone both curious and understanding. “Then you know how it is—just trying to make it all work. We moved here a couple of years ago, starting fresh. This gym... it’s been everything for us. And I really appreciate you coming. It means a lot.”

Cam nodded, her words resonating. “I get that too. Starting over isn’t easy, but it seems like you’re doing a great job.”

For a moment, their eyes met in understanding, a shared thread of lives shaped by family and resilience.

Kayla ran him through the basics—stances, grips, and escapes. Despite his athleticism, Cam struggled at first, but Kayla’s patience and encouragement helped him find his footing. By the end of the hour, he was sweaty, tired, but surprisingly eager for more.

As he grabbed his bag to leave, Kayla called out, “Good luck in your next game. Texas State, right?”

“Yeah,” he said with a grin. “It’s gonna be a big one.”

Outside, the cool evening air greeted him as he started the short walk home. His thoughts drifted to Kayla and her daughter, their dynamic oddly reminiscent of his own childhood. He’d been that kid in the corner while his mom juggled work and raising him.

He pulled out his phone, scrolling to his contacts. His thumb hovered over “Mom” for a few moments. Memories flooded in—her sacrifices, her unwavering belief in him. He hit “Call.”

“Cam?” she answered, a mixture of surprise and joy in her voice.

“Hey, Mom,” he said, smiling. “Just wanted to check in.”

And as he walked home, the world felt a little closer, a little more connected, than it had before.
