Miami RB Damien Martinez enters the draft as LB Chase Smith jumps into the portal

Miami junior running back Damien Martinez, who led the team in rushing last year, is entering the NFL Draft as expected following a one-year stop at Miami.

Martinez, who transferred from Oregon State, rushed for 934 yards, averaging 4.5 yards per carry with a team leading eleven touchdowns. A six-foot, 232-pound running back, Martinez has a chance to skyrocket draft boards if he tests well at the NFL Combine and at Miami's pro day. Martinez showed while at Miami that he's more than just a power back, showcasing quick feet and improving as a receiver with 38 receptions and three receiving touchdowns.

Miami has plenty of talent at running back to replace Martinez in Mark Fletcher Jr. who was second on the team with 683 yards on a team high 5.4 yards per carry as well as Jordan Lyle who rushed for 130 yards as a true freshman and the speedster Chris Johnson Jr. who scored three touchdowns against Florida A&M.

Miami is also losing Chase Smith, the uber athletic linebacker out of Groveland, Florida that recorded seventeen tackles last season along with an interception against Florida A&M. Smith was Miami's fourth linebacker, playing behind Francisco Mauigoa, Wesley Bissainthe and Jaylin Alderman. Both Bissainthe and Alderman have another year of eligibility left and with two highly ranked linebackers enrolling early in five-star prospect James Fernandez and four-star linebacker Jacques Turk, Smith was likely looking at yet another reserve role in his last year of eligibility.

With a recruiting class that has twenty-one signees, Smith likely isn't the last Hurricane to have to enter the transfer portal.
