Steelers Bolster Defensive Depth With Watson, Simmons

Image

Pittsburgh, PA. - The Pittsburgh Steelers continued their aggressive approach to free agency on Tuesday, announcing a flurry of moves that reshaped both sides of the roster. The headliner: cornerback Jaylen Watson, who joins the Steelers on a three-year, $21 million contract after spending the start of his career with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Watson arrives as a replacement for Darius Slay, who departed after one season in Pittsburgh. At 6-foot-2, Watson brings length, physicality, and the ability to match up with bigger receivers — traits that fit seamlessly into a secondary already boasting Jalen Ramsey and Joey Porter Jr.. The trio could give the Steelers one of the more imposing cornerback groups in the AFC.

The team also moved quickly to strengthen the back end, signing former Chargers safety Alohi Gilman to a three-year, $19.5 million deal. Gilman, a steady presence in Los Angeles’ defense, will compete with Juan Thornhill for the starting free safety role, providing depth and flexibility for defensive coordinator Teryl Austin.

The Steelers weren’t done with the defense. Former Cardinals and Giants hybrid linebacker Isaiah Simmons agreed to a two-year, $12 million contract, giving Pittsburgh a versatile chess piece capable of lining up at safety, slot corner, or linebacker. Simmons’ athleticism and range could be invaluable in sub-packages against modern spread offenses.

Joining him is former Cowboys linebacker Damone Clark, who signed a three-year, $9 million deal. Clark, just 25 years old, adds youth and speed to the linebacker rotation, potentially slotting in as an off-ball defender alongside Cole Holcomb.

While much of Pittsburgh’s offensive core is intact outside of the unsettled quarterback position, the front office also looked to add playmaking depth. Speedy running back Keaton Mitchell signed a three-year, $13.5 million deal, bringing home-run ability as both a change-of-pace runner and return option. Mitchell’s explosiveness could complement Kaleb Johnson and Jaylen Warren, giving the Steelers one of the deeper backfields in the league.

The team also inked return specialist and gadget player KaVontae Turpin to a one-year, $7 million contract. Turpin, a Pro Bowl returner with the Cowboys, offers game-breaking speed and could factor into Pittsburgh’s offensive packages as a slot weapon or jet-sweep option.

Through two days of free agency, the Steelers have taken clear steps to strengthen their defense and diversify their offensive skill set. With Cameron Heyward’s retirement and the search for a new franchise quarterback still looming, Pittsburgh’s front office has prioritized surrounding the roster with proven veterans and flexible role players to keep the team competitive in 2026.

Getting some the classic value Madden guys for me there with Turpin and Mitchell - great depth pieces.

And adding a lot of athletic, flexible talent can only help. Good moves thus far this offseason :yep:

Thank you sir! Mitchell is a guy I sign in almost every franchise too lmao can never have enough speedy bois. Same with Simmons - he usually develops into a + S/LB and we'll see - maybe he'll have a bigger role :curtain:

Steelers Send Smith To Los Angeles

Image

Pittsburgh, PA. - With the NFL Draft just days away, the Pittsburgh Steelers appear to be readying their war chest as they traded veteran TE Jonnu Smith, along with a 5th and 7th round pick, to the Los Angeles Chargers for their 3rd round pick.

The move gives Pittsburgh two 3rd round picks, along with their own 2nd and 1st rounders as well.

"They're clearly planning for something big," stated a rival GM, "Jonnu is a good player, but without Smith there running double TE sets he was expendable."

Steelers Make Their Move

Image

Pittsburgh, PA. - When quarterbacks Cade Klubnik and Drew Allar went back-to-back at picks No. 7 and No. 8 in the 2026 NFL Draft, Steelers GM Omar Khan knew it was time to act.

But instead of moving up for LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier — the last quarterback with a first-round grade — Khan went in a different direction. Pittsburgh packaged its two third-round picks (their own and the one acquired from the Chargers) along with a future third to land Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr., who had just seen his replacement drafted in Allar.

After the deal was announced, Khan kept his comments brief.
“We’ve still got plenty of draft left — we’re only ten picks in,” Khan said. “But we saw an opportunity to bring in a guy we rate very highly. When Coach Tomlin, Coach Daboll, and I went through our evaluations, Anthony was someone Brian identified as having a ton of untapped potential.”

The Steelers are clearly betting that Daboll can work the same magic with Richardson that he once did with Josh Allen in Buffalo — another raw, uber-athletic passer who blossomed into a franchise star under Daboll’s watch.

Not everyone in Pittsburgh was thrilled. With the draft being held in the Steel City this year, boos rained down when Indianapolis selected Allar. One fan summed it up bluntly: “WE. WANTED. DREW.”

Still, others found reason for optimism. “At least he’s not another over-the-hill retread,” said one fan. Another added, “Even if we don’t win big right away, he’ll give us some highlights.”

For now, the Steelers have their quarterback. Whether Daboll can unlock Richardson’s potential remains the franchise’s biggest gamble yet.

I didn't even realize until the end of the season that DK was 4 yards away from breaking CJ's record :pgdead:

AR was the 2nd option for me - I was hoping to get Allar but once he got scooped up I pivoted. Milroe would've been option #3 before kicking the can to Arch next year
