Zaire Franklin and Whit Weeks bring new voice, new edge to Titans defense
During joint practices with the Dallas Cowboys, the Tennessee Titans’ defense never stayed quiet for long. Whenever Zaire Franklin jogged to the sideline for a breather, the familiar soundtrack of his constant barking — part instructions, part smack talk — would fade. But before the Cowboys could enjoy the silence, rookie Whit Weeks was right there to fill the void.
The handoff of noise is by design. Franklin, acquired in an offseason trade with the Colts, has quickly established himself as the vocal heartbeat of Tennessee’s defense. Weeks, the LSU linebacker drafted in the fourth round, has leaned into Franklin’s mentorship — and into the edge the Titans hope will reshape a unit.
“[Franklin] doesn’t let you hide,” Weeks said after the Titans' second joint practice with the Cowboys which was incident free after a scuffle on Monday. “He's a vocal guy and I'm an emotional guy too so we feed off each other's energy."
For a team searching for identity on defense, Franklin’s arrival is as much about attitude as ability. He brings experience and the reputation of a tone-setter — a player whose words carry weight not just in the huddle, but across a practice field buzzing with competition.
Weeks, lacking the experience but not the mentality, has found himself pushed into that same mold. The same can be said for the rest of the defense, which was involved in a scuffle on Monday with the Cowboys during a period that was supposed to be non-contact turned physical.
Titans head coach Brian Callahan believes the pairing could be transformative.
“Zaire has been where Weeks wants to go,” Callahan said. “When you see a young guy like Whit soaking it up and then turning around and applying it — that’s culture. That’s how you change a defense.”
It’s no small task. Tennessee's defense was promising at times last season with All-Pro defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons leading the charge but often fell to put games away or give the offense one final possession to try to win it. The front office responded by doubling down at linebacker, betting that Franklin’s edge and Weeks’ youthful bite could jump-start a turnaround.
Rueben Bain Jr. not deterred by quiet opener
By his standards, Rueben Bain Jr. had a less than ideal rookie debut with just a tackle for loss that came in the second half and one quarterback pressure. Bain, the fourth overall pick, said after the game that he was equally encouraged as he was disappointed.
"Obviously, I want to have more of an impact on the game," Bain said, "I also understand that I'm not going to learn everything all at once and play the way I want to play every single play right away. I'm just hungry to get back to work, continue to critique my game and get better."
Callahan and Bowen both said there were promising signs from Bain in his opener and that they expect him to see a similar workload against the Dallas Cowboys when the defense will take on one of the better offenses in the NFL. Bain will also receive a boost with Jeffery Simmons expected to play at least in the first quarter according to Callahan.
Cam Ward, Tony Pollard expected to play the first half
Tony Pollard did not play in the opener but is expected to play against Dallas in an 'extensive manner' according to Callahan along with quarterback Cam Ward, who only played a drive in the opener.
Callahan said that he wants to get the offense a 'really good look' against Dallas and that he wants to see them work through the drive-by-drive issues that might arise in a regular season game.
"As fun as it is to go out there, score seven points and call it a day, that's not football," Callahan added, "I want to see guys compete, react to things maybe not going our way and then respond. I think being out there in a more extensive manner allows for more opportunities to arise that we have to deal with it and figure out so we'll probably see them for a little bit in the first half."

Brandon Aubrey drills 61 Yd GW field goal to beat former team
Brandon Aubrey and KaVontae Turpin made their return to Dallas in style as Turpin's receptions of 23 and 8 yards in the final fifteen seconds of the game helped set up Aubrey's game winning 61-yard field goal as the two former Dallas Cowboys joined forces to secure the 34-31 win over their former teammates.
On the previous drive, Dallas' Joe Milton III had matched Tennessee's Jalen Milroe's consecutive game-tying and then go-ahead drives. With two minutes left, Milton completed passes of thirty and twelve yards to get the ball in the redzone where he would find tight end Brevyn Spann-Ford for the seven-yard touchdown to tie the game with a minute left.
Prior to that, Milroe had led impressive drives of his own, once to tie the game with a 30-yard completion to Jam Miller after scrambling for a first down on third and long with four minutes left and after a 58-yard punt return by rookie Deion Burks, Milroe found another rookie receiver in Ja'Kobi Lane on third down for the go-ahead touchdown with 2:44 left.
The catalyst in the Titans comeback, however, was Isaiah Simmons who forced a fumble at the one-yard line on a scramble by Milton that would result in a touchback when Dallas was already leading by a touchdown with six minutes left in the game.
Milroe and Milton replaced Cam Ward and Dak Prescott respectively who both played the entire first half. Ward had two interceptions but responded with touchdown drives after both, finishing the game with 167 yards passing and a touchdown. Prescott was practically flawless, going 14 of 17 for 144 yards and two touchdowns.
Tough day for the offensive tackles
Third round pick D.J. Campbell got the start at right guard over Daniel Faafele after Faafele got the start in the opener and while he get called for a holding penalty, he wasn't the problem. Veteran left tackle Dan Moore got called for two holding penalties that negated first downs and J.C. Latham's penalty also negated a first down and on the next play, Ward would throw his second interception of the game.
Dallas' first round pick at defensive end Matayo Uiagalelei had a monster game against Latham with three sacks and while not all of them were Latham's fault, he didn't have a strong performance.
The run game, however, continues to look promising with 212 yards on the ground, averaging an impressive 9.6 yards per carry.
Welcome to the NFL, Rueben Bain Jr.
After a quiet opener, Rueben Bain Jr. wasted no time introducing himself to Dak Prescott with an early quarterback pressure that drew a hold against Terence Steele and on the second drive of the game, Bain would get his first (unofficial) sack on a beautiful inside move before taking Prescott down.
It was a good day for the rookies with Jam Miller being the top rusher with 44 yards rushing on just five carries. Deion Burks continues to impress at receiver and on special teams while Ja'Kobi Lane caught a touchdown and took some snaps with the first team offense after Chimere Dike had a third down drop for the second game in a row.
Whit Weeks continues to be active with three tackles and a tackle for loss but was partnered with James Williams Sr. or Tanner Muse in the second half instead of fellow rookie Taurean York who did not register a snap defense after playing extensively last week.
Injury News
Brandon Allen and Jake Browning did not dress for the game in what was a bit of a surprise. Both Allen and Browning saw extensive work in the final two days of the joint practices and Callahan said after the game that they are both healthy but that it was a coach's decision based on their overall workload.
Offensive tackle Olisaemeka Udoh picked up an ankle injury early this week and did not play as did cornerback Rejzohn Wright who suffered a shoulder injury.
Wright was replaced by rookie Jermaine Matthews Jr. who missed last week with an injury but played nearly the entire game this week as the Titans clearly want to get him back up to speed as the opener nears. Matthews Jr. was really impressive in his debut with a breakup in the endzone and was stout against the run as well, especially considering he is coming back from an injury.
