"I didn't want this to be announced through a breaking news article on ESPN. People finding out from Bleacher Report notifications and viral posts. For everything this community and organization has given to me, you deserved to hear it from me."

"This morning, I accepted a contract to become the next head coach of the USC Trojans."

That was how Kenny Dillingham started his impromptu press conference Monday morning. The presser, which lasted 33-minutes, was a somber event. Dillingham opted not to take questions, instead spending the time continuing to praise the entire Arizona State Sun Devils organization from top to bottom.

"I meant what I said last year. This place is home. It always will be. But sometimes, opportunities present themselves and it would be foolhardy to decline. Arizona State will always have a warm place in my heart. I want to make one thing clear: my departure should not be viewed as a slight against this organization, by any means. USC represented a unique opportunity, a task that many in the country would love to undertake. I consider it a once in a lifetime opportunity, and that is why, with a heavy heart, I knew I had to accept."

"To whoever succeeds me in Tempe, know this: you're inheriting a university that will give you the full support you need. There was never a time during my tenure here where I thought: 'if I was at X, Y, or Z, I would have more support.' I did not take this job looking at it like a stepping stone. To me, this was the job. And I hope whoever you are, it will be the job for you too."

"I have informed athletic director Graham Rossini that while it is my desire to bring some of my staff with me to Los Angeles, I am not going to fully gut the staff. Those that wish to stay will not be held in contempt by myself. And I promise, I will not actively recruit any current Sun Devils to join the portal to follow me. I implore the fans to remember, these young men can act on their own volition. Should one of them enter the portal and wish to come to Los Angeles, they will be welcomed. But I stand by my promise, I will not attempt to persuade any current players to enter the portal simply to follow me."

Dillingham left the Tom and Gloria Dutson Theatre after his final statement to a smattering of applause from the reporters in attendance.

Arizona State fans have every right to feel hurt. Just one year ago, Dillingham publicly declared he wasn't going anywhere. But promises are made with the information available at the time, and circumstances change. Listening to him Monday morning, it was difficult to conclude anything other than that he meant what he said then—and meant what he said now.

This doesn't feel like a coach using Arizona State as a stepping stone before discarding it. This is someone who made the agonizing decision to choose between his home, and opportunity. You can't fault him, even if it stings, for doing what he felt was best for his career.

This isn't Lincoln Riley slinking out of Norman to fly to Los Angeles in the dead of night. Or Bobby Petrino leaving a note in the Atlanta Falcons locker room as he flies to Fayetteville.

This is Kenny Dillingham, pouring his heart out to Sun Devil nation, and making sure that he was the first person we heard the program shattering news from.

Deep down, we all knew this day would come.

Instead of anger, I implore we thank Coach Dillingham. He brought us from the fringes of obscurity to the College Football Playoff.

There will undoubtedly be fans who never forgive him. Others will simply thank him for restoring relevance to a program that had spent years searching for its footing. Both reactions are understandable, and both were visible Monday morning as Dillingham walked away from the podium for the final time.

Dillingham leaves Arizona State the same way he arrived: with urgency, honesty, and an understanding that the program was bigger than any one person. The Sun Devils will now begin searching for their next leader. But whoever takes over in Tempe won't be rebuilding from nothing—the foundation was already poured.

Lost in the chaos that has been the 2026 coaching carousel was the selection of several Arizona State Sun Devils to the All-American second team as well as the Big XII team as well.

Both strong safety Lyrick Rawls and linebacker Martell Hughes were named as second-team All-Americans in addition to being first-team All-Big XII selections.

Additionally, freshman running back Demarius Robinson was named to the national All-Freshman team.

Several more Sun Devils earned Big 12 recognition alongside Rawls and Hughes. HB Kyson Brown, WR Omarion Miller, LT Jalen Klemm, DE Emar'rion Winston, and FS Adrian Wilson were all announced as second-team All-Big XII selections.
