Miami's Jeremiah Smith, Tyler Baron to wear coveted jersey number for the Hurricanes
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports Miami Insider
When Mario Cristobal took over as Miami Hurricanes head coach in 2022, he said the jersey #1 has to be earned, and can only belong to the "baddest son of a gun" on the team.
In the 2022 and 2023 seasons, Miami did not have a number one on its roster. Last year, senior linebacker Francisco "Kiko" Mauigoa and senior transfer quarterback Cam Ward both wore the coveted jersey. This year, it'll once again go to two former transfers with defensive end Tyler Baron and wide receiver Jeremiah Smith with players numbers being released on the team's updated roster.
"He is built like an avatar and he is explosive," said Cristobal when asked about Baron. "He has one of the most natural feels for the game of anyone I have seen. He understands leverage and angles. He is really smart. He is locked in and in tune with what is going on. He is always looking for ways to get better and he works hard. He is tough. He checks all the boxes. And now he is full throttle. He has shown everybody what he is about and he is another hungry human being."
Baron, who transferred from Tennessee, had eight tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks last season for the Hurricanes while sharing snaps with Elijah Alston and Akheem Mesidor opposite of Reuben Bain. An energetic and disruptive pass rusher, Baron has grown into a leadership role during his time at Miami with Bain describing Baron as the spark plug of the defensive line.
"He gets us going," Bain said of Baron at ACC Football Kickoff, "He's always lifting us up, giving us a ton of energy, getting us hype. I'll try to calm him down sometimes and at the end of it, he just gets even more hype and now I'm matching his level and we just go out there and make plays."
For Smith, his homecoming is one of the more anticipated Hurricane debut in recent years as he is widely regarded as the best receiver prospect since Julio Jones. He caught eleven touchdown passes for Ohio State last year before transferring to Miami where his customary No. 4 jersey, which he wore in high school and and at Ohio State, is currently worn by another star on the team in running back Mark Fletcher Jr.
Smith wore No. 6 in the spring game.

Miami Football: 2025 Hurricanes Season Preview and Prediction
Athlon Sports Staff Writer • 8 min read
Head coach: Mario Cristobal (4th at Miami)
Offensive Coordinator: Shannon Dawson (3rd season)
Defensive Coordinator: Lance Guidry (3rd season)
2024 record: 11-2 (lost CFP Round 1)
2025 recruiting rank (247 Sports): No. 4 nationally, No. 1 in the ACC
Preseason All-American: OT Jalen Rivers, OT Francis Mauigoa, DE Reuben Bain Jr, DE Tyler Baron
Preseason All-ACC: WR Sam Brown, OT Jalen Rivers, OG Anez Cooper, DE Reuben Bain Jr, DE Tyler Baron, HB Mark Fletcher Jr, WR Mario Williams, OT Francis Mauigoa, LB Wesley Bissainthe, S Kamari Wilson, P Dylan Joyce
The Miami Hurricanes were as close to being back as they have ever been in 2024, making the College Football Playoffs before suffering an early exit at the hands of the USC Trojans, who would make it all the way to the CFP Semifinals.
An incredibly productive offseason led to that success, which included pairing the top available quarterback in the portal in Cam Ward with the top available running back in Damien Martinez. Miami seems to have replicated that formula by going out and getting Middle Tennessee State's Nicholas Vattiato along with two of the best receivers in the portal in Jeremiah Smith and Mario Williams.
Mario Cristobal was able to temper the criticism with a strong 2024 season but with renewed expectations and hope, Hurricanes fans and the media at large will be expecting similar results in Cristobal's fourth senior as the cupboard is full of four and five stars from three consecutive elite recruiting class under Cristobal, arguably the sports top recruiter.
Previewing Miami's Offense for 2024
The Hurricanes haven't officially named Vattiato their starting quarterback but all signs point to the Florida native as being the team's starter against Syracuse in the season opener.
Vattiato competed with Emory Williams and Reese Poffenbarger in the spring and with Poffenbarger entering the portal, it's likely down to Vattiato and Williams. Williams does have some experience with two starts as a true freshman back in 2023, beating Clemson and nearly upsetting Florida State on the road but his experience pales in comparison to Vattiato who was the starter for three seasons for the Blue Raiders.
The redshirt senior threw for 28 TDs and 3,385 yards in 2024 and is a viable option in the running game with 431 yards on the ground. He does have some experience against Power 4 opponents, playing Ole Miss and Duke last year. He's also started games against Alabama and Missouri and while none of those performances stood out, it should curb the learning curve once he's lined up against bigger bodies that he'll see in the ACC.
The offensive line, anchored by two Preseason All-Americans in Jalen Rivers and Francisco Mauigoa, should continue to be a strength of the team. They bring back their entire offensive line with Anez Cooper being a potential NFL draft pick along with Ryan Rodriguez at center and Matthew McCoy at the other guard spot who should improve as they were first-time starters last year.
Miami's quarterback situation should be buoyed by the supporting cast with Preseason All-ACC running back Mark Fletcher Jr, Preseason All-ACC receivers Sam Brown and Mario Williams in addition to Freshman All-American Jeremiah Smith who many view as Miami's best receiver prospect since Andre Johnson. Tight end Elijah Arroyo is another talented piece of this offense, finishing second on the team last year with 52 receptions
Previewing Miami's Defense for 2024
The Hurricanes are getting a complete facelift of their secondary, adding three new corners from the portal and safety Kamari Wilson. They do return some experience in the secondary in Damari Brown, D'yoni Hill and O.J. Frederique Jr. who all started multiple games at corner last season but the Hurricanes' passing defense was near the bottom of the ACC last year and the fact that they went out and got four defensive backs in the portal alone, on top of their high school class, is a sign that Miami is looking to improve that secondary.
Upfront, they lost a ton of production in Tyler Barrow Jr, Elijah Alston, C.J. Clark, Akheem Mesidor and Marley Cook. They do return Reuben Bain Jr. and Tyler Baron, who might be the best EDGE pairing in the country but behind them it's not a lot of proven talent. Instead, it's a crop of former five-stars that still need to make their bones in the college game in second-year players Armando Blount and Marquise Lightfoot along with true freshman Walt Coffey.
On the interior, it's almost entirely unproven with Justin Scott elevating into a starting role, another former five-star. Behind him, it's redshirt sophomore Josh Horton and redshirt freshman Artavius Jones and then a slew of young defensive tackles, including five-star true freshman Kevin Yeboah. Defensive tackle isn't a position you want to be young at as they'll be going up against grown men in the trenches that are just stronger and more physically developed.
Wesley Bissainthe is back at linebacker, but the guys beyond him are average or unproven. The staff is extremely high on redshirt freshman Adarius Hayes and five-star true freshman James Fernandez but they just haven't done anything at the college level yet to have confidence in them.
Schedule (2024 record)
vs. #24 Syracuse (9-4, 5-3 ACC)
vs. USF (7-6, 5-3 AAC)
vs. Florida (2-10, 1-7 SEC)
vs. #11 Notre Dame (11-3)
vs. FAU (4-8, 3-5 AAC)
vs. #8 NC State (10-3, 6-2 ACC)
vs. Stanford (5-7, 2-6 ACC)
at #3 Florida State (9-4, 5-3 ACC)
vs. Louisville (7-6, 3-5 ACC)
at Pittsburgh (3-9, 2-6 ACC)
at #15 Virginia Tech (9-4, 5-3 ACC)
at SMU (8-5, 5-3 ACC)
Miami doesn't leave the state of Florida until the final three week of the season as they open the season with seven home games and then a trip in-state to Tallahassee and then back at home to host Louisville.
It's not an easy schedule by any stretch with Syracuse to open the season, a solid G6 program in USF after that and then back-to-back rivalry games with Florida and Notre Dame. But, they're all at home which should let them ease in a new-look offense and plenty of young players that are going to be playing significant roles by the end of the year.
The road stretch is doable as well because outside of Florida State, they don't go into any other tough atmosphere with it being road games against Pittsburgh, which could be dead in the water once more by the time they play them, a Virginia Tech team that they handled last year and Rhett Lashlee's SMU which will likely be in decent weather and a squad that's not above nosediving.
Projected ACC Standing: 1st
Projected Final Ranking: 5th
With a more proven quarterback, Miami might be everyone's sexy preseason national champion pick but with Vatiatto being a relatively unknown commodity to the public, he'll need to win over hearts and mind and he'll have a chance to do so early in the season against Syracuse, USF and Florida before the ultimate test against the Irish.
Even in Vatiatto is nothing more than a game manager, this roster is talented enough to rattle off ten wins, get into the College Football Playoffs and potentially get hot at the right time, like we saw with USC and Colorado last year.

supposedly the newest update makes it so you can change numbers for non nil players in offline dynasty.
did you have to do the duplicate number trick 100 times to get #1s?

Miami lands first commitment of 2026 class with Monarch tight end Javier Bowie
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports Miami Insider
Every top five recruiting class begins with one commitment and Miami is already off to a great start as they look to land a third consecutive top five class with four-star tight end Javier Bowie committing to the Hurricanes on Monday.
Bowie was on campus watching Miami practice during fall camp when he pulled the trigger, picking Miami over Georgia, Florida, Florida State and Alabama.
The six-foot-six, 239 pound prospect is ranked inside the top-200 and is the eighteen ranked tight end this cycle with a lot of similarities to current Miami tight end Elijah Arroyo. He's more of a receiver than a true tight end at this point of his development, similar to Arroyo, but with his frame and physical traits, he should be able to develop into an at least serviceable inline blocker.
Miami might not be done at the position as they plan on signing two tight ends this cycle with their eyes on top-five prospect Juan Woodside who currently plays receiver at the high school level but with his size at six-foot-five, 240 pounds, Miami is recruiting him to play tight end which he is open to.
