"Bombastic" report surfaces of head coach Don Brown trashtalking offensive coordinator James Xavier

AMHERST, MA -- Reports have surfaced of UMass Minutemen head coach Don Brown being caught on an audiotape being critical of his star offensive coordinator, James Xavier. This comes during an impressive 6-0 start for the Minutemen in their inaugural season in the Mid-American Conference.

The audio file has circulated and seems to have been taken sometime during the pre-season. Many pundits believe it stems from the media day broadcast on a camera that was accidentally not turned off. The camera is not in focus, but it has been heavily reported to be Coach Brown speaking with other coaches on the UMass staff.

Though some of the audio is muffled, it can be overheard Brown, though not mentioning Xavier by name, speaks on the offensive coordinator "hogging all of the limelight and taking credit for everything good that's happened as if we haven't been grinding this out." Brown goes on to speak on how Xavier's recruitment efforts have birthed lackluster results.

"Guy thinks he's Mr. Charisma, but can't land a single [expletive] recruit of note. He's completely ignored some of the profiles I sent him, talking about how we've overloaded our recruitment board already, [expletive]."

Brown, who is in the midst of a successful second stint with the football program, hired Xavier out of the Florida high school football system last season and has seen a rapid turnaround behind Xavier's creative and hyperproductive offense. A notable rift has been reported in the last few months surrounding the focus of Xavier's offense, which has been nationally ranked since midway through his first season in Amherst. Brown first encountered Xavier when he was a quarterback at the University of Michigan, and Brown was the defensive coordinator under Jim Harbaugh.

"The way he processes information was evident even from [our side] sitting on the defensive side of the ball," commented head coach Don Brown during the initial press conference announcing Xavier as the team's newest offensive coordinator. "It was a damn shame he got hurt the way that he did, but seeing him rebound and become the powerhouse coach he's become. We're fortunate to have him here at UMass."

The audioclip that has been circulating on the internet is about 50 seconds in length and has been picked up by most major sporting news outlets. So far, no one from the UMass administrative team has commented on the reports. Head coach Don Brown has notably disabled comments on his Instagram account.

No players have commented on the notable divide in the locker room, though quarterback Ahmad Haston has changed his Instagram profile picture to a photo of him and Xavier celebrating a victory. Other players, such as running backs Jalen John and C.J. Hester, as well as wide receiver Kezion Dia-Johnson and tight end Noah Staples have done similar things on their respective pages.
