Huskies active yet again at the trade deadline, trade defensive end Allen, QB Newton

The Toronto Huskies have traded defensive end Jonathan Allen to the Denver Broncos for a 2023 second round pick. They have also traded quarterback Cam Newton to the Tennessee Titans for a fifth round pick and cornerback Malcolm Butler and traded a fifth round pick for Tampa Bay LB Michael Pinckney, a former fifth rounder himself.

Allen, a first round pick in 2017 by the Washington Redskins, was set to carry a $11.1 million cap hit in 2023. With the team likely to re-sign defensive lineman Matthew Ioannidis to a long term deal this offseason, they opted to trade Allen in order to have flexibility in perhaps re-signing defensive end Montez Sweat at a cheaper rate than Allen while also leaving room for the mega-extension that Chase Young is set to receive in 2024.

With news that tight end Brycen Hopkins will miss two months with a dislocated ankle, the team tried to include tight end Brevin Jordan in the Allen trade but Denver declined despite the former first round pick only having two catches in his two seasons behind Dallas Goedert and Noah Fant. The team instead signed tight end Jordan Franks.

The Pinckney trade landed LB Christian Sam, sidelined with a dislocated elbow, on IR to free up a roster space.

When Newton signing with the team back in the off-season, it was with the stipulation that if a starting job came available, he would be traded. Titans quarterback Justin Herbert broke his toe last week, giving Newton the opening he was waiting for.

The team had also shopped cornerback Sidney Jones IV but injuries to corners Donovan Bigby and Lavert Hill slowed down the appetite to potentially trade Jones in just his second season with the team.
