Atlanta, GA. - The Texas Longhorns have made a season of overwhelming opponents with fireworks and flair. But on Saturday night inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium, they showed they can win ugly too — and perhaps sent their most intimidating message yet to the rest of the College Football Playoff field.
Behind a suffocating defense that piled up 11 sacks and forced two early turnovers, No. 1 Texas cruised to a 21-3 victory over No. 9 Georgia to secure their second consecutive SEC Championship.
It wasn’t pretty. It didn’t have to be.
“You always want more points, sure,” head coach Nash Savage said with a grin. “But as long as we’re scoring more than the other guys? We’re doing all right.”
For the first time all season, the high-octane Longhorns (13-0) failed to crack 30 points. In fact, their 21-point output was a new season low — a full touchdown below their previous floor. But Georgia never came close to threatening thanks to a Longhorn defense that turned Mercedes-Benz into a house of horrors for Bulldogs quarterback DaShawn Salako.
Defensive end James Mosely continued his campaign of destruction with 4.5 sacks, ballooning his season total to 27 and breaking Texas’ single-season record.
“I told people in the spring he was going to have a Jason Veasy-type season and they laughed at me,” Savage said postgame, referring to the former Syracuse star and NCAA single-season sack leader (29). “Who’s laughing now? He’s two away from the all-time record.”
Georgia, playing in its third SEC title game in four years, managed just 178 total yards once Texas’ 11 sacks were factored in. Even Salako’s respectable 20-of-32 passing night was marred by a pair of first-quarter interceptions by cornerback Jarrad Frank that set the tone early.
The Longhorns capitalized on both turnovers with touchdowns to build a quick 14-0 lead. From there, they didn’t look back.
“We kept getting behind the sticks — 2nd and long, 3rd and long,” Salako said with a sigh. “You can’t beat a team like that playing from behind all night.”
For Texas, Barry Orlovsky was held in check by Georgia’s front seven, grinding out 126 yards on 24 carries. But he still found the end zone once to push his season touchdown total to 37, keeping the senior running back within striking distance of Darryl Pope’s NCAA record of 40 set during the former Cardinals 2032 Heisman campaign.
“You have to tip your cap to Georgia’s defense,” ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit said during the broadcast. “They held the No. 1 offense and the Heisman frontrunner in check all night. But you’ve got to get more from your offense in a game like this.”
With the victory, Texas extended its winning streak to 29 games — the longest active streak in the FBS — and kept alive its pursuit of history. The Longhorns now await their College Football Playoff seeding with a chance to join Ball State (2033-35) and Syracuse (2028-32) as the only teams in the CFP era to win back-to-back national titles.
Speaking of Ball State, the Cardinals survived an epic double-overtime shootout against Syracuse in Week 13 (69-66) to earn a shot at the Big Ten title. A week later, Kadin Semonza’s squad captured its second straight conference crown with a 27-16 win over No. 15 Cincinnati.
Meanwhile, Orlovsky and Mosely are closing in on individual immortality. Orlovsky’s 37 touchdowns leave him three shy of Pope’s mark, while Mosely’s 27 sacks put him within range of Veasy’s record. Both will have at least one more game to chase history — and possibly two if Texas reaches the national championship.
“This is what we’ve worked for all year,” Savage said. “Now it’s time to finish it.”
