Pittsburgh, PA. - For most of Sunday’s game, the Pittsburgh Steelers looked every bit like the AFC contender they believe themselves to be. But for a three-and-a-half–minute stretch late in the second quarter, the Atlanta Falcons flipped the script and turned a comfortable Steelers lead into halftime drama.

The afternoon started rocky. Pittsburgh’s opening drive sputtered with just one first down before Atlanta blocked the punt, setting up rookie QB Michael Penix Jr. for a short-field touchdown strike from six yards out.

From there, though, Anthony Richardson and the Steelers offense found their groove. Richardson engineered three straight touchdown drives, highlighted by his improvisational playmaking and a balanced rushing attack, giving Pittsburgh a 21-7 cushion with just over four minutes left before the break.

Then came the meltdown. Ray-Ray McCloud III split the safeties on a seam route and raced 75 yards for a touchdown. On the ensuing drive, a holding penalty pushed Pittsburgh back, and Richardson was strip-sacked — the ball scooped and returned for another Atlanta score. To cap it off, a late field goal sent the Falcons to halftime improbably up 24-21.

Whatever was said in the Steelers’ locker room worked. Pittsburgh roared out in the second half, and Richardson responded with authority. He tossed three more touchdown passes after the break, spreading the ball around with confidence while the defense suffocated Atlanta. Penix threw two second-half interceptions, and even workhorse Bijan Robinson coughed up a rare fumble as the Steelers slammed the door.

By the final whistle, Pittsburgh had outscored the Falcons 24-0 in the second half, cruising to a statement 45-24 victory.

Richardson Downs Plays Emotions Ahead Of Return To Indy

Image

Pittsburgh, PA. - After an uneven debut in Week 1, Anthony Richardson delivered the kind of performance the Steelers envisioned when they traded for him — torching the Atlanta Falcons in a 45-24 rout and silencing critics who wondered if his turnover issues would linger.

“Definitely wanted to go out there and show the turnovers weren’t going to be the norm, no doubt,” Richardson said following Tuesday’s practice. “It felt good to just play free again and get back to who I am.”

Now, the spotlight turns to his next test — a prime-time return to Indianapolis, the city that drafted him No. 4 overall and then traded him away just three years later. But Richardson insists it’s not personal.

“Nah, not at all,” he said when asked if Sunday’s matchup carried extra emotion. “It’s a place where I learned a lot, where I grew up as a player and as a man. There’s no ill will on my part toward the organization or the city. I’m focused on the Steelers and what we’re building here.”

When pressed about wanting to prove the Colts wrong for drafting Drew Allar and moving on from him, Richardson offered a tight smile and a short answer: “I don’t really think about that.”

Still, those in Richardson’s circle say the moment isn’t lost on him.

“He’s happy in Pittsburgh — probably the most relaxed I’ve seen him since his rookie year,” said one person close to Richardson. “But just because you’re happy in a new relationship doesn’t mean you’ve forgotten the old one. He’s definitely got this game circled. He wants to walk into Lucas Oil and remind them what they gave up.”

Regardless of how Sunday night unfolds, one thing is clear — the careers of Drew Allar and Anthony Richardson are now linked. The Colts chose one and shipped out the other; the Steelers landed their quarterback after missing on the same player.

For both franchises, Sunday night feels like more than just another early-season matchup. It’s the first chapter in what could become one of the league’s defining storylines for years to come.
