What a fraud, get ranked and then lose. And because of the coaches defense. And this journalist comes at you what softball questions!?

Here’s a question Coach - Is it true your head coach had to give you an attitude check since your head got so big? Why the arrogance when your defense continues giving up points?

And I know you didn’t just compare the FCS to the PAC12 Championship. I’m about to write a newspaper article about your disrespect for the PAC and comparing it to the FCS.
FCS National Championship* and he wasn't comparing, strictly pointing out he's coached big games before :druski:

also, he did say he laid into his team about the lapse and they've been through practice hell the last two weeks for the gaffe. But even so, still coaching the 10th ranked defense in YPG jusssayin

Defensive Stand Ends Texas State's Potential Game-Winning Drive As Beavers Win The Pac
Ricky McKinley // Dam DailyPublished: December 11th, 2026

THE DAM HOLDS, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN.

Trailing 23-21 with just over four minutes remaining, the Texas State Bobcats were within field-goal range for the go-ahead score, but with so much time on the clock, head coach GJ Kinne stated after the game he wanted to go for the "knockout punch."

Instead, Ka'eo Akana drilled Brad Jackson on the pass attempt, causing it to sail high, and converted safety Hasson Manning Jr rose up for the interception. Salahadin Allah would carry the ball seven times on the final drive as the Beavers salted away the clock to clinch their first Pac-12 Championship since a three-way tie for the title in 2000.

It hardly looked like the vaunted Beavers' defense would be able to halt the Bobcats' offense as Texas State scored on their first two possessions, each with the benefit of a big play to set up the scoring opportunity. Trailing 3-0 after Oregon State marched their own opening drive for points, Texas State quarterback Brad Jackson kept the ball on a read-option and slipped undetected out of the backfield. If the quarterback had an extra second or two on his 40-time, he would have been gone, but he was run down 47 yards later by LB Hasson Manning Jr to keep the Bobcats out of the end zone, that is, until Tiaquelin Mims got inside leverage on a slant route and hauled in the eight-yard touchdown.

On their next possession, it was Jackson's turn to make a play with his arm, lofting a perfect 42-yard pass despite the Beavers' relentless pass rush bearing down, with Tyler King hauling in the bomb despite textbook coverage by strong safety Kyle Chen. Greg Burrell would dive into the end zone two plays later and the Bobcats were up 14-3 thanks to a pair of explosives.

Oregon State's defense would begin to settle in after the two flurries, holding the Bobcats without a first down in the second quarter as the pass rush finally started getting home. While the Beavers' defense racked up four sacks in the second quarter alone, the Beavers' offense finally found a groove as Kallen Gutridge and Co. took advantage of the short fields with a pair of touchdowns to take a 17-14 lead into the half.

Oregon State would tack on another field goal coming out of the halftime break, but disaster would strike on their next possession when Bobcats' safety Ryan Nolan jumped a post route and snatched the ball in midair for the interception. The sudden change of possession jolted the Bobcats' sputtering offense back to life as tight end Ty Stamey ended the drive with a 15-yard corner route for the touchdown.

Since the Beavers had taken the lead midway through the second quarter, it felt like the momentum in the building solely belonged to the orange and black, but in the span of minutes the stadium seemed filled with Bobcats' energy as the Texas State sideline erupted on the score.

The Beavers' aggressive pass rush continued to make life difficult for the Bobcats, refusing to let them add onto the slim 21-20 lead. The Beavers themselves finally broke through after tight end Jackson Bowers turned an out-route into a 18-yard reception, then backup halfback Jake Reichle churned out 20 yards to put the Beavers just inside Logan McCreery's field-goal range, who laced the 50-yard boot to take a slim 23-21 lead.

Brad Jackson was determined not to let his Texas State squad slink out of Allegiant Stadium with their tails between their legs, quickly completing passes of 18 yards to Greg Burrell, then 22 yards to Ty Stamey. Facing 1st-and-10 from the Beavers' own 40, Jackson scrambled out of a sack for a gain of nearly ten, but then gave three yards back as Tygee Hill buried Jackson for a 3-yard sack, the ninth sack of the contest for the Beavers' defense.

Facing 3rd-and-3 from the Oregon State 32-yard line, the Bobcats got aggressive. And that's when the play of the game happened, as Manning Jr rose up and plucked the ball, and a championship trophy, out of the air.

On the podium after the confetti finished falling, defensive end Ka'eo Akana was named the game's MVP for his two sacks, including one on the final drive that forced the 3rd-and-long prior to the interception.

Speaking while holding the Pac-12 Championship Trophy, HC Jonathan Smith said he hoped this is a lesson for all of the "other guys."

"This program was written off and forgotten about two years ago. Hats off to athletic director Scott Barnes, who never gave up on making Oregon State football great. To any other school out there that thinks they're going to get left behind in this new age of college football, I implore you. Keep fighting, keep striving for greatness. It's attainable."

Now let's go to the CBS broadcast crew who had none other than defensive coordinator Armando Leon join them after the celebration.

•••

Brad Nessler: "Congratulations Coach Leon on an incredible season and turnaround for your defensive unit this season. After you had immediate success at Montana State under Brett Vigen, did you have those same expectations coming to Corvallis, or are you pleasantly surprised at the quick turnaround?"

Armando Leon: "No one likes losing, Brad, myself included. But did I think we'd go 9-4 and win the Pac-12 the first year? I definitely didn't have any plans of getting in front of a hot mic and guaranteeing it, that's for sure. But it's a testament to the hard work we've put in since arriving, the culture we've established since Day 1. Coach Smith deserves a ton of credit; people like to talk about the defense, but it starts at the top and he's been a helluva teacher and coach this season."

Charles Davis: "Let's talk about the defensive game plan a bit, Coach. Texas State was generating chunk plays early, but you guys weathered the storm, adapted, and held them in check until that final drive. What was the key to the game plan against an innovative offense like Texas State?"

Armando Leon: "You saw it, Charles, hit the quarterback a lot. Nine sacks takes a toll on even the toughest competitor's body and you saw the results. That final throw? It's one Jackson makes nine times out of ten under normal circumstances. But when he's been driven into the dirt nine times, hit how many other times that don't show up in the stat sheet, and is coming off just being sacked? Everything speeds up and that's when mistakes happen. Our philosophy has been; put the opposition into long-yardage situations, then take advantage of the mistakes. We did that on a grand scale today and it won us the game."

Adam Zucker: "Last one Coach, then we'll let you get back to celebrating with your unit. After an impressive debut season, taking the Oregon State Beavers from 2-10 to 9-4 currently, with a top-50 defensive unit, have you had any other programs reach out about future vacancies?"

Armando Leon: "It would be a bit premature in the process for teams to reach out to me, but we all know in today's day and age, tampering windows are merely suggestions. But to be frank, no. Haven't heard from anyone and am not crossing my fingers hoping for a call. I'm focused on awaiting the bowl matchups to see our final game of the season. Tomorrow will come, one way or the other."

•••

It took twenty-five years and the Pac-12 nearly collapsing, but here we are! Pac-12 Champions and damn does it feel great!

If you would have told me to start the season we would get only one of either nine wins, a Pac-12 Championship, or a top-ranked defensive unit, I would have been skeptical to begin with. But to get all three, in the first year of Coach Jonathan Smith's return?

We hit the jackpot. Here's to hoping that we don't go bust before we get the chance to keep building our winnings. But regardless of what the future holds, we're going to party like it's the year 2000 tonight.

THE DAM IS BUILT, PEOPLE.

Nice job. Now leave so I can cheer for you. I didn’t care until a few updates ago you had to bring up Oregon State beating Oregon. Now i wish you nothing but heartbreak.

Nice defensive stand though.

National Award Announcements, College Football Playoff Seeding, and Where the Beavs Are Bowling
Ricky McKinley // Dam DailyPublished: December 13th, 2026

Before we get into the awards announcements, I just want to go on record and say our man Sailasa Vadrawale III was ROBBED. You're telling me a CORNERBACK who finished in the top five for both the Bednarik and Nagurski, isn't the Jim Thorpe award winner? Not only did our guy come in second place, but the kicker?

HE FINISHED ABOVE HIM IN BOTH THE BEDNARIK AND NAGURSKI VOTING BUT IS SECOND IN THE THORPE!?

Make it make sense.

Okay, lost my head a bit there. In other news, defensive end Ka'eo Akana turned his 15 sack senior season, made even more impressive with him coming into the season with exactly zero sacks, finished fourth for both the Lombardi and Edge Rusher of the Year awards, while Zachary Card finished second for the Jet Award.

However, we here at the Dam Daily would like to sincerely congratulate former Pac-12 member, even if he was at that other school up north, John Mateer on his 2026 Heisman victory. The Sooner quarterback led Oklahoma to a perfect regular season record, despite losing in the SEC Championship Game to rival Texas, throwing for 3,444 yards with 36 touchdowns to a mere 4 interceptions, adding another 651 rushing yards and 11 more rushing touchdowns to boot.

Mateer also brought back to Norman the Maxwell and Walter Camp, but lost out on the Davey O'Brien to Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning.

With their SEC Championship Game loss to the Longhorns, the Sooners not only missed out on a perfect 13-0 start, but fell out of the top four and thus will have to open the first round of the College Football Playoff against the 12th-seeded Missouri Tigers. The winner of that 5 vs 12 matchup will advance to the Cotton Bowl to face the 4th-seeded Big Ten Champion Ohio State Buckeyes (12-1).

Big brother up north, Oregon, earned the 8th seed behind their 10-2 record and will host the 9th seeded Notre Dame Fighting Irish (10-2). The victor will travel to Miami to face the SEC Champion and #1 overall seed Texas Longhorns (12-1) in the Orange Bowl.

Meanwhile, Big Ten runner up USC (11-2) earned the 6th-seed and will host the ACC runner-up Duke Blue Devils (11-2) who garnered the 11th-seed. The 3rd-seeded Georgia Bulldogs (11-1) earned their own bye despite not playing in a conference championship and will face the winner in the Fiesta Bowl.

Finally, the champions of the Big 12 and American, Texas Tech (11-2) and Tulane (11-2) respectively earn the 10th and 7th seeds, with the Red Raiders heading into Louisiana. The winner moves to Georgia to face ACC Champion (12-1) Miami.

While our beloved Oregon State Beavers will not be crashing the playoff this year, although I have already started squirreling away money to buy National Championship tickets next year, they will be featured in the Holiday Bowl against the 16th-ranked SMU Mustangs (10-2).

While we're all disappointed the Beavers couldn't hold onto their 25th ranking of a few weeks ago, which would have likely grown with wins against Washington State and in the eventual Pac-12 Championship, another showdown with a prominent Power Four program will only continue to boost the profile of the rebuilt Oregon State program.

We'll see you guys in a few weeks when we break down how the Beavs and Mustangs stack up along with a special edition of the "Leon's Lowdown" from San Diego, California!

2026 Holiday Bowl Preview - #16 SMU Mustangs (10-2) @ Oregon State Beavers (9-4)
Ricky McKinley // Dam DailyPublished: December 20th, 2026

Oregon State finishes an already highly successful 2026 campaign in sunny San Diego as they prepare to face the 16th-ranked SMU Mustangs in the Holiday Bowl.

Things won't be any easier for the Beavers in this one with another prolific offense on tap. after holding the 6th-ranked Bobcats offense to 21 points, the Beavers are hoping for a repeat performance against the Mustangs' offense, led by Kevin Jennings, who are 2nd nationally points scored and 1st in yards per game.

I don't think it's hyperbole to say this is easily the most lethal offense Coach Leon is going up against, but we'll hear it from the man himself after a quick glance at the statistical breakdown between the two squads.

Leon's Lowdown

RM: "The sun isn't the only thing brightening things up down here in sunny San Diego, as the SMU Mustangs enter this contest with a scorching hot offense behind a one-time Heisman contender in Kevin Jennings. Fair to say this is the most dynamic offense you've faced this year, Coach Mando?"

AL: "Statistically, yes. But we've also faced two other schools in the top-10 offensively in Texas Tech and Texas State, whom we beat twice, so while they're a different animal, it's also the same beast essentially. Every team has little quirks, so it's just identifying what is different, then drawing up ways to exploit it. I'll tell you the biggest matchup is going to be our secondary. They've got dynamic athletes in Jalen Cooper and Chris Dawn on the outside, we've got to keep them from running buck wild on us, or it's going to be a long night of getting humped down the field."

RM: "Let's take a minute to talk about Ka'eo Akana. We all know the story by now; he bounced around a bit, got some playing time at both Utah and Hawaii, but never produced a sack. Then suddenly, he takes a flier to come up to Corvallis and you turn him into a sack machine, finishing with 15 on the year. Does that speak more to your ability to coach 'em up, or did the other schools just not give him enough water to make him blossom?"

AL: "That's the problem with some of those bigger schools—you don't have a lot of time to break through. If you aren't impressing them by camp going into year two, you're cooked. I don't know what happened at Hawaii; you'd think they'd lean into him a bit being a hometown kid, but for whatever reason he saw minimal playing time. It took two practices for me to see the raw ability he had, so we just worked together from there. I was a former pass rusher and I think having someone who's been in the trenches to bounce ideas off of really appealed to him and he skyrocketed once we started working one-on-one. But I can't take all the credit; he came here willing to put in the work to get the results, and they speak for themselves."

RM: "Okay, Coach, I hate to do this. I see you already shaking your head across the table, but I have to ask it. They're accusing me of giving you softball questions already, so I can't not ask this question.

"We all saw the news that Billy Napier and Brian Kelly are going to the NFL, while Willie Fritz and Kyle Whittingham are retiring. It only takes one to make a window, and now we have four head coaching vacancies. So should Beaver Nation start drafting their farewell cards now, or later?"

AL: "Draft 'em all you want, Ricky. But I have no news on that front. I haven't talked to, or received requests, from any programs to leave Corvallis. Far as I see it, you lot are stuck with me. Hope we can catch up one more time after the Holiday Bowl, Ricky. Have a Merry Christmas."

RM: "I hope I'm still on the Christmas card list after asking that question, but same to you and the family, Coach. Hope you get a bowl win on Christmas Eve!"

I know you guys couldn't see it, but Coach Mando was NOT happy with that final question. But hey, that's part of reporting. You can take his comments with a grain of salt, but I for one believe him. We all saw the reports of the big-name schools opening up and while I'm not advocating for Coach Leon to end up at Florida or LSU one year into his college football coaching career, we all know the trickledown effect is real.

What would keep a program like North Texas or Tulane, from gambling on potential and hiring an almost 35-year old defensive coordinator with a proven track record?

I, for one, hope that Coach Leon's phone goes dark mode until it's time to hit the recruiting trail again.

But back to business at hand, we saw the boys hold their own against Texas State's vaunted attack. But SMU makes the Bobcats look like a warm-up.

Hate to say it, but Coach Leon is going to have to wait for that first bowl win.

SMU 38, Oregon State 17.
