No. 14 Hawai‘i Defeats Wyoming 27–17 to Regain Paniolo Trophy

HONOLULU, HI --
Behind a disruptive pass rush and clutch scoring drives, the 14th-ranked Hawai‘i Rainbow Warriors knocked off Wyoming 27–17 on Saturday night at Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex, keeping the rivalry hardware on the islands for another year.

Hawaii’s defense set the tone early, sacking Cowboys quarterback Kaden Anderson three times in the opening half and limiting Wyoming’s ground game. Quarterback Micah Alejado broke the game open with a third-and-long scramble for a touchdown, igniting the home crowd and giving UH the edge.

After Wyoming briefly tied the game with a second-quarter score, Hawai‘i answered immediately with a touchdown strike to tight end Oakie Salave'a. From there, the Warriors never trailed.

In the second half, Kansei Matsuzawa connected on a field goal to extend their lead back to double digits. The Cowboys responded with Anderson's second touchdown pass of the day, cutting the lead back down to three.

With the game on the line Alejado methodically drove his team down the field thanks to multiple completions to Jackson Harris and Pofele Ashlock. On 4th and inches with 2:43 left on the clock, third string running back David Cordero took the direct snap and charged up the middle for a gain of five. On the next play Alejado punched it in from three yards out to extend their lead back to ten.

On Wyoming's final possession, facing a 4th down, defensive end Wynden Ho'ohuli broke free for a sack to end any chance of a comeback. With the win Hawaii finishes the regular season a perfect 8-0 in conference play as they will host UNLV in the Mountain West Championship.

UNLV Shocks #12 Hawaii To Win Mountain West Championship

HONOLULU, HI --
For three quarters, it looked like No. 12 Hawaii was on its way to completing a perfect run through Mountain West play. But in the biggest moment of the season, UNLV saved its best football for last.

The Rebels erupted for 24 points in the fourth quarter and outscored Hawai‘i 27–3 in the second half, storming back to claim the 2025 Mountain West Championship with a 36–21 victory on a rainy night at Clarence T.C. Ching Athletic Complex.

Hawaii (11–2, 8–0 MWC) controlled the first half behind two touchdown runs by Landon Sims and Cam Barfield, carrying a 14–9 lead into halftime. When Barfield added a second score late in the third quarter, the Rainbow Warriors were up 21–12 and seemed to have the Rebels on the ropes.

But that’s when UNLV (10–3, 7–2) flipped the script.

Caden Costa drilled a 50-yard field goal to cut into the deficit (one of his five made field goals in the game), and early in the fourth quarter running back Jai’Den Thomas plunged in from four yards out to pull the Rebels within two. Moments later, quarterback Alex Orji broke free for a 27-yard touchdown run, giving UNLV its first lead of the night with just over six minutes to play.

From there, the Rebels never looked back. Costa added another clutch kick, this time from 25 yards, before Orji put the exclamation point on the rally with a nine-yard scoring run with 1:20 remaining.

UNLV’s defense was just as critical to the comeback. After surrendering three touchdowns in the first three quarters, the Rebel front harassed Hawaii's offense in the fourth, keeping the Rainbow Warriors off the board entirely and sacking quarterback Micah Alejado on what seemed like every play.

In all, UNLV scored the game’s final 24 points and turned what looked like a dream season for Hawaii into heartbreak.

“This is what we’ve been working for,” Orji said after hoisting the trophy. “Nobody gave us a chance against a top-15 team, especially after we lost to them at home, but we believed in each other. That fourth quarter showed what Rebel football is all about.”

For Hawaii, the loss was a bitter end to what had been a remarkable run, snapping an eight-game win streak and dashing hopes of a playoff bid.

"It was a tough way to end our run but I'm incredibly proud of these boys," said Hawaii coach Timmy Chang. "We can still hold our heads high knowing just how special of a season we had. This is only the beginning."

For UNLV, it was history. Behind a relentless defense, timely special teams, and a dominant fourth quarter, the Rebels are Mountain West champions for the first time in school history. After making it to the championship game and falling short each of the last two seasons, they have finally gotten over the hump and have reached the top of the Mountain.
