Can Huskies fix the defense in 2023?

The Toronto Huskies wasted no time firing defensive coordinator Brendan Daly and after fielding two of the NFL's worst defenses the past two seasons, it's easy to see why. Fixing the defense, however, won't be so easy.

Toronto enters the 2023 off-season with a high powered offense that desperately needs its defense to catch up. They had hoped that the answer would be in in Mike Tomlin but Tomlin, after entertaining the idea, ended up with an head coaching job in Chicago. Toronto will still look to lure perhaps former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores but for now, the play caller on defense remains a mystery. It doesn't help that Devin McCourty announced his retirement.

Speaking of retirements, Toronto improved its offensive line play with the signings of Mitchell Schwartz and Bryan Bulaga. Bulaga also retired and Schwartz is a pending free agent. Toronto now has a gap to fill at left guard unless they rock with former third round picks and starters Calvin Throckmorton and Josh Myers. Ideally, Toronto would love to kick center Netane Muti back to guard where he had success as a rookie as opposed to center, where he struggled last season. This leaves Toronto in the market for a center as well as deciding on whether or not to bring Schwartz back at right tackle.

The big fish this offseason, however, is wide receiver Terry McLaurin. McLaurin ended the 2022 season with a bang, finishing the year in the top five in receiving yards and posted his first 1,000-yard season since his rookie campaign. McLaurin's numbers were helped by Rondale Moore's injuries but was it enough to get Toronto to give him a mega extension in the ballpark of a number one receiver?

At running back, Sherwin Florence and Bryce Love are nice complementary pieces with Love having a great playoff run. Despite this, neither have really solidified themselves as true feature backs and with Love's contract up, it's likely that he is on his way out.

Huskies secure front seven, bring back Rosas and Thompson; tag Schwartz

The Toronto Huskies are bringing back starters from last year's defense, albeit the 32nd ranked defense in almost every category. The Huskies re-sign defensive tackle Matthew Ioannidis, defensive end Montez Sweat, linebacker Cole Holcomb as well as safety Jalen Thompson.

Ioannidis' deal is 2 years, $24 million while Sweat is three years, $28.4 million to keep the front four of Ioannidis, Da'Ron Payne, Chase Young and Montez Sweat together. They also re-sign all-pro Holcomb to a three year, $22 million while getting a bargain for Jalen Thompson at two year, $5.9 million in a potential replacement for the retired Devin McCourty.

Toronto used their franchise tag on tackle Mitchell Schwartz, coming in at the $16.4 million tag for the all-pro tackle. With the franchise tag used up, this likely means that pro bowl receiver Terry McLaurin will be a free agent.

Kicker Aldrick Rosas also signed a two year, $8.9 million extension.

Huskies add veterans Hightower, Suh and Thomas to defense along with Bowles hiring

The Toronto Huskies opened the first day of free agency with three signings, all former pro bowlers as they signed safety Earl Thomas III, defensive end Ndamukong Suh and linebacker Dont'a Hightower.

The deals are all one-year deals with Thomas and Hightower getting $3 million and Suh getting $1 million.

Just a few hours before the official start of free agency, the team announced on their social media page that they had hired defensive coordinator Todd Bowles. Huskies pursued after Mike Tomlin and Brian Flores, with Tomlin ending up in Chicago and Flores replacing the retired Sean Payton in New England following their Super Bowl win.

He played eight seasons in the NFL as a safety, mainly for the Washington Redskins, and started in Super Bowl XXII against the Denver Broncos. Bowles was the interim defensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2012, and then for the Arizona Cardinals in 2013 and 2014. He was the interim head coach for the Miami Dolphins for the final three games of the 2011 season with a 2-1 record after the firing of Tony Sparano, and served as the head coach of the New York Jets from 2015–2018.

Bowles was the defensive coordinator in Tampa Bay before Bruce Arians retired last season. He spent the 2022 season out of football.
