Upper St. Clair falls just short, drops narrow loss to DeMatha

Upper St. Clair's undefeated run came to an end Friday night in Maryland, as the Panthers dropped a tightly contested 41-31 matchup to powerhouse DeMatha Catholic High School. Despite a spirited fourth-quarter comeback attempt, the Panthers couldn't overcome a late turnover that sealed their first loss of the season.
Quarterback Malik Richards delivered one of his most productive games of the year, finishing with 359 passing yards and four touchdowns through the air. Richards kept Upper St. Clair within striking distance all night, distributing the ball effectively against DeMatha's aggressive defense.
However, the turning point came midway through the fourth quarter. With the Panthers driving to potentially tie the game, Richards attempted to a force a dig route to wide receiver Cam Wilson.The pass was jumped by DeMatha linebacker Anthony Berry, resulting in a costly interception that stalled the comeback effort.
Upper St. Clair's receiving corps still produced strong numbers. Three-star wide receiver Zane Jones hauled in 12 receptions for 115 receiving yards and a score, continuing his strong season as Richards' most reliable target. Wilson also made his presence felt as his stock continues to rise, catching seven balls for 110 yards and a touchdown himself, including several key third-down conversions that helped keep drives alive.
DeMatha's defense was anchored by the state's top-ranked edge rusher, Leon Winfield III, who consistently disrupted the Panthers' pocket. Winfield finished with two tackles for loss and two sacks, applying pressure that forced Richards to speed up several throws throughout the night.
On the other side, DeMatha's offense proved explosive. Four-star quarterback Justin Marlow showcased why he's one of the most coveted passers in the region, throwing for 405 passing yards and five touchdowns in a standout performance. One of his primary targets was four-star wide receiver and University of Michigan commit Jett Moore, who finished with seven catches for 105 yards, repeatedly stretching the Panthers' secondary.
Despite the loss, Upper St. Clair showed resilience, fighting back late to cut the deficit to one possession before DeMatha closed the door. The Panthers now sit at 5-1 on the season as they regroup and prepare for the final stretch of their schedule, including trips to Ohio and Michigan for more interstate contests.
