From the Ashes.

Mario Cristobal leaves the door open with faux vote of confidence on quarterback Nicholas Vattiato
Carlos Navarro -- The Athletic Staff Writer
Miami head coach Mario Cristobal said all the right things when asked about starting quarterback Nicholas Vattiato and his recent streak of turnovers, citing that some of them were great plays made by the defense and that Vattiato, with his ability to extend plays, is also making plays and scoring points that other quarterbacks can't.
What was of more importance, however, was what Cristobal hasn't said all week. Cristobal has has three different opportunities -- the post-game presser, his Monday morning radio appearance and his Wednesday afternoon practice availability -- to double down that Vattiato is the team's starting quarterback for the rest of the year and each time, Cristobal has side stepped the question.
"We like [Vattiato] and we feel that he gives our team the best chance to win," said Cristobal on Monday, "You've got to look at the whole picture, see what's working, see what's not working and go from there. I don't think it's fair to isolate just one position, one play or handful of plays and go from there. You have to look at everything, analyze everything and see where we're coming up short and then make a decision."
Vattiato was benched for a series against Florida Atlantic after throwing two interceptions. Despite being a fifth-year transfer, he split first team reps with two other quarterbacks in the spring and in fall camp, he didn't begin to separate from the pack until after the second scrimmage.
In speaking with those close to the program, the feeling has always been that Vattiato has done enough to be the team's starting quarterback but that the coaching staff was split on naming him the starter. He was outplayed by Judd Anderson in fall camp and so far this season, Emory Williams has been the standout at practices. Someone with direct knowledge of the situation said they wouldn't be surprised if all three quarterbacks got in the game against Stanford in preparation for Miami's toughest slate of their schedule with road trips to Florida State, Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech coming up.

Miami's comfortable 34-6 win over Stanford not without drama as starting QB benched
The Miami Hurricanes are back to their winning ways, handily beating Stanford 34-6 on Saturday after being upset by NC State last week.
It wasn't without incident, however, with Miami quarterback Nicholas Vattiato throwing two first half interceptions, on both the first and final drive of the half, and was benched for the remainder of the game. Emory Williams finished the game, throwing for 181 yards, completing sixteen of eighteen passes with Miami scoring on all of their second half possessions.
Miami head coach Mario Cristobal said after the game that expectations weren't being met with Vattiato which is what led to his benching but did not rule out Vattiato starting next week against Florida State.
"We needed a spark, see something different and [Williams] provided that," said Cristobal, "I think there's value in [Vattiato] being able to watch the game from the sideline, see it from a different perspective and as a competitor, definitely put that drive in him to attack this week's practice and we'll make a decision and go from there."
Miami's defense was as dominant as ever, scoring on a pick six by Armando Blount in the first quarter and holding Stanford to negative yardage on the ground when factoring sack yardage. Even without those, Miami native Sedrick Irvin was held to a yard per carry with his longest run being a nine-yard carry.

some of them are bad throws though, didn't post a recap vid but the first pick against Stanford he horribly misplaced a slant to JS1, threw it right to the corner that was trailing. The second interception, Horton beat his guy on a post but the ball was underthrown and undercut by the DB
