Sun Devils Stay Hot In Tempe Thanks To Fourth Quarter Dominance
12 Utah (3-1) @ Arizona State (5-0) 26 | Mountain America Stadium | Tempe, AZ.
By Emilio Suarez Image October 2nd, 2027
The Sun Devils started their early October contest against the Utah Utes with a bang, nailing Byrd Ficklin for a safety after a holding penalty pushed the Utes against their goal line. They then spent the next three quarters fighting to stay within striking distance until Austin Mack delivered a sparkling fourth-quarter performance.

Austin Mack would fumble on the Sun Devils opening possession after the free kick, and Utah converted the only turnover for ASU into a field goal. It would be a disappointing result for the Utes, as it became the story of their evening.

Three straight drives the Utes offense drove into ASU territory. Each of those drives ended with a field goal as the Sun Devil defense stood stout to keep the score close. Austin Mack would finally get the Arizona State offense out of neutral on the final drive of the half, finding Mason Mini on a jump ball in the back corner of the end zone to tie the game at 9 all going into the half.

The Sun Devils opened the second half hoping for a double-dip to take the lead, but found themselves inches short after a 4th-and-inches attempt at midfield was snuffed out by Utah MLB Kana'i Lopes. Utah would settle for their fourth, and final, field goal of the contest as they retook the lead.

From there, Austin Mack delivered.

He ran in a 10-yard touchdown on 4th-and-one, plunging across the goal line for the go-ahead score. JaBril Rawls would force—and recover—a fumble on the next Utah possession and Mack delivered once again with a 15-yard strike to Austin Carlisle on a corner route to quickly and forcefully slam the door shut on any potential comeback.

"We obviously want to be more explosive earlier, but you have to tip your cap to the defense. They fought all night to keep us in the game and we finally came through on our end," said ASU OC Ra'Shaad Samples after the narrow 26-12 victory.

Arizona State will remain home next week as the Iowa State Cyclones whip into Tempe, hoping to hand the Sun Devils their first loss of the Weis era.

Saldiveri Island Coming To Tempe
Man-coverage specialist a 'huge get' for ASU according to Adlridge
The Devil's Due Mailbag — Season Preview Image By Diego Alfaro
Published: October 3rd, 2027
Ever since Josh Aldridge and Patrick Surtain Sr. were hired, it was no secret they wanted to play more press man-coverage against the up-tempo Big XII offenses.

"To me, that's how you counteract all of these RPOs and screens teams are doing now a days," rationalized Surtain Sr. during the offseason. "You get in their face and make them actually read a defense, not just throw the designed play."

"But to do that, you've got to have guys who are comfortable on islands."

Introducing Saldiveri Island, coming to Tempe in the spring of 2028.

The three-star cornerback, who has been praised as a man-coverage specialist by Anthony Peerman with On3, from Lawndale, California officially announced his decision to commit to the Sun Devils.

"I had my visit this weekend and you can just feel the passion in the building," said Saldiveri when reached for comment. "Coach Pat and Coach Aldridge were just up front about the vision and how I was a key component in that."

When asked why he skipped a verbal commitment that would still give him time to reconsider, Saldiveri doubled down "Why delay what I know is the best decision for me?"

"From the staff to the university and the campus, I loved every minute of it. I didn't need to visit any more schools, because I knew I belonged there."

"Saldiveri is a gifted athlete who uses that to his advantage in coverage," praised Peerman of On3 in his scouting review before the season. "He's got the strength to press without giving up leverage, and the speed to recover on the rare occasion he gets beat. Fluid hips and a great understanding of route concepts allow him to almost always be in the right position. His hands leave something to be desired, but he makes up for that by rarely, if ever, getting beat in man."

"There is always a downside and for Saldiveri it's twofold. For how great his man coverage skills are, you'd love to see more interceptions. But worse than that, he is atrocious in zone coverage. Like a lost puppy bad. He gets confused on who is he and isn't responsible for and often finds himself reverting back to his man-coverage instincts, throwing the whole coverage off kilter. He'll have to at least improve on that marginally, because the Sun Devils won't always be able to hide him."

Saldiveri, the 695th-rated prospect this year and the 69th CB, becomes the second recruit of the Charlie Weis Jr. era, joining Jay Bourne who committed last week.

Three star linebacker Alex Minnis, the 627th-rated prospect in this year's class, is reportedly weighing between the Sun Devils and USC with a decision expected 'soon' according to sources close to the Moraga, California native.

385th-ranked WR Mike Holly and 415th-ranked G JJ Read are both visiting Tempe this week as the Sun Devils prepare for the Iowa State Cyclones.

Sun Devils Aren't Settling Despite 5-0 Start
'Changes coming' to offense according to Tommy Rees, Ra'Shaad Samples
The Devil's Due Mailbag — Season Preview Image By Diego Alfaro
Published: October 5th, 2027
Charlie Weis Jr. and his staff have the Sun Devils offense humming to start their inaugural campaign in the desert, but despite the strong start, they're not content to lay off the pedal.

"We're always looking at ways to improve, period," stated Weis Jr. after practice on Monday, where co-offensive coordinators Ra'Shaad Samples and Tommy Rees added a few wrinkles to the Sun Devils' offense.

"Look, we have one of the top scoring attacks this year, the stats say that. But, that doesn't mean it's all offense. We've had plenty of defensive touchdowns, and we've had the benefit of some lopsided victories to improve those numbers," further explained Weis Jr. "We're making moves that we feel are going to help our passing attack turn the corner."

According to one source close to Tommy Rees, the idea is to lessen the usage currently on Kyson Brown's shoulders while getting the versatile Austin Carlisle and the rest of the Sun Devils receiving corps more engaged.

"Kyson has really been their offense this year, accounting for 42% of their offensive yardage. That isn't sustainable," explained the source.

Samples himself acknowledged the high-usage rate.

"He's in the Heisman conversation for a reason, he's everywhere. But while we love that, we also want him to be everywhere come Championship Weekend and beyond."

"Right now, KB, Austin, and RVB are the only receivers to break 200 yards. Something has to give."

Rees also noted that the Sun Devils wanted to get the dynamic trio of Raiden Vines-Bright, Austin Carlisle, and Kyson Brown on the field together more.

"You kind of see the defenses eye's follow him[Austin Carlisle] when he enters the game. Same for KB. We want to get the defense in the pickle of having to choose which one of our three track stars they want to run with. Because most times, they don't have the athletes to cover all three."

In addition to reportedly moving Carlisle into the slot on passing downs with higher frequency, the Sun Devils are also planning on putting Jaren Hamilton into the game plan early and often, reflected by the former Alabama recruit's increased role in practice this week.

"RVB is getting it done, but we need to see more overall production from the wide receivers," explained Rees. "This isn't a demotion for anyone. We're going to keep moving pieces around. It just means that Bettis Jr. and Lacy aren't always going to be the primary guys with RVB out there."

Arizona State will look to keep their offensive production humming next week with the Iowa State Cyclones bringing a rare tornado to Tempe.

2027 Week Six Preview
Iowa State (4-2) @ #17 Arizona State (5-0)
The Devil's Due Mailbag — Week Five Preview Image By: Emilio Suarez
Published: October 8th, 2027
Arizona State will look to remain perfect this weekend as the Sun Devils prepare to host Big XII foe Iowa State at Mountain America Stadium. The Cyclones are looking more like their in-state rival Iowa than ever before, boasting one of the top defenses in the country, while being entirely anemic offensively.

They'll look to put the Sun Devils in the spin cycle this weekend and be the first team to hand Charlie Weis Jr. a loss when they storm Tempe this weekend.

Pitchfork Points

Image Run it up.

Does Iowa State statistically have one of the top-ranked defenses in the country? Yes. But they've also lost two games by giving up 30+ points. The formula is clear; if you make Iowa State have to score, they're going to lose. All four of the Cyclones wins came with the opposition being held under two touchdowns. It's time to see if these Cyclones really are a whirlwind of problems, or if they've blown over some paper houses this season.

Image New changes = new production?

Charlie Weis Jr. and his staff weren't shy announcing they were moving the receivers around. Jaren Hamilton is expected to slide across from Raiden Vines-Bright, with Austin Carlisle getting 'a ton' of reps at slot this game. The biggest question is, can they keep their production up if they aren't force-feeding Kyson Brown?

Image Less bend from the defense

The Sun Devils' defense only gave up four field goals last week, but consistently gave up chunk yardage before finally bowing their back. A few late sacks helped diminish the yardage they gave up, but against an anemic offense like the Cyclones the defense should have a field day. Let's see a statement performance from the defense to keep the momentum moving into the second half of the season.

:baze: once I got used to the new offense he settled in nicely. He's got a big arm and I've found recently he can move a bit too, which is nice in short yardage

Sun Devils Stall Cyclones, Move To 6-0
17 Iowa State (4-3) @ Arizona State (6-0) 49 | Mountain America Stadium | Tempe, AZ.
By Emilio Suarez Image October 9th, 2027
The formula was simple: score over 14 points and the Iowa State Cyclones would fizzle into nothing more than a brief windstorm.

The Sun Devils accomplished that by the end of the first quarter in what turned into a 49-17 rout at Mountain America Stadium that moved the Sun Devils to an impressive 6-0 to start the 2027 campaign.

Austin Mack was on fire from the opening snap, leading a crisp 10-play drive to open the game with a touchdown. A rare miscue resulted in an early interception on the Sun Devils' second drive, which almost instantly turned into one of two long touchdowns for Dominic Overby. It was the only hiccup in the contest for Mack who rebounded from the mistake to finish with six touchdowns on the day.

"Just finding the open guy and trusting they'll be there," said a humble Mack when asked about his success as of late. While much was made about the Sun Devils shakeup at wide receiver during practice, Mack appeared unfazed. The former Alabama quarterback completed passes to eight different Sun Devils on the afternoon as he shredded the Cyclones top-rated defense.

Despite two long-touchdowns by Conner Moberly to Dominiv Overby, the Sun Devils took a commanding 35-14 lead into the half after a flawless two-minute drill saw Mack hit Jerome Bettis Jr. in the corner of the end zone to close out the first half.

While the Cyclones would get a field goal late in the third quarter, the win was never in question for the Sun Devils.

Arizona State heads to Fort Worth next week to face the TCU Horned Frogs.

The Commitments Come Rolling In
As Sun Devils surge up the AP poll, the recruiting wins are coming fast
The Devil's Due Mailbag — Season Preview Image By Diego Alfaro
Published: October 10th, 2026
Just two weeks ago the Sun Devils received their first verbal commitment for the 2031 graduating class, and Charlie Weis Jr.'s first recruiting win as a head coach.

While the Sun Devils demolished the Iowa State Cyclones this weekend, the scoreboard at Mountain America Stadium wasn't the only thing working in overdrive. The recruiting trail was equally as exciting for the Sun Devils, with five more recruits either verbal or outright committing to the Sun Devils this weekend.

Leading the charge may not be the highest rated prospect this year, coming in at 627th, but linebackers coach Joey Porter Sr. thinks Alex Minnis has the talent to be a household name before he leaves Tempe.

"The athleticism is off the charts. Like, crazy," marveled the longtime Steelers linebacker. "Just really, really fluid. Good hips, great fast twitch muscles. When he decides he's going somewhere, you blink and he is THERE. That's what we need. Guys who can close gaps and passing lanes just as quickly as they can get after the QB."

While Porter Sr. is incredibly high on the Moraga, California prospect, On3's Anthony Peerman has a more reserved take on the linebacker.

"He's athletic, yes. But that's about all he has," cautioned Peerman. "He doesn't do coverage well. He isn't instinctive in the run game and he struggles to get off his block rushing the passer. I mean, there is something to be said about being near the ball, but at this rate, he's simply slowing down the ball carrier for others to clean up."

Minnis isn't the top-ranked player, regardless of Porter Sr.'s assessment, as that honor belongs to corner Donald Sharpe from Plano, Texas, the 365th-rated prospect.

"He's another one of those prototypical man corners," acknowledged Peerman, "We know by now what identity the Sun Devils are trying to build defensively, they want to get in your face on all three levels and make you beat them."

"Sharpe has the talent to do that."

In addition to the commitments from the pair of defenders, Weis Jr. also reportedly received :onestar: verbal commitments from Mike Holly (385th), G JJ Read (415th), and SS Ama Smoot (430th), bringing the Sun Devils total commitments for this cycle to seven with more than half the season remaining.

:nothanks:

I have a house rule where a newly hired coach can't leave before 3 seasons, to avoid that exact thing. If he does good Y1 then every school with an opening will offer him and we'll have a revolving door at HC, since the other house rule is if he gets an offer from a higher prestige school he'll accept it (after that 3 year window). And I don't see our prestige raising until we win a few CFP games

I'll review it on a case by case basis, but even Dillingham avoided leaving for four years, even though he was sought after for two straight years.
