The Big House on the Prairie
Chapter Nine :: Million Dollar Baby, Part Two

The South Carolina was incredibly frustrating, perhaps even more so than the loss to Oklahoma as I had played well against South Carolina and we still lost the game so the criticism, despite my improved performance, didn’t let up. Athletes talk all the time about blocking out the noise, ignoring the critics and social media but for me, that was never a reality. I was a 20-year old college student and trying to stay off my phone was nearly an impossible task. Even when I didn’t go looking for it, criticism of the team would somehow find its way onto my timeline.

The only place that was sacred from that was Irene’s small one-bedroom apartment on Peachtree. She didn’t watch football, didn’t care much for it and once she realized she wasn’t obligated to ask me how my game went out of politeness, she stopped asking altogether. For Irene, her problems and the challenges she faced were that of the real world. While she was only a few years older than me — twenty eight at the time to be exact — she felt like such a grown up to me. She had bills, multiple jobs and not only had been through some shit in this thing we called life, she had made it to the other side. At least that’s how I viewed it through my childish lens. The reality of the situation very well could have been that she was just as lost as me, just as uncertain but she didn’t show it.

She was estranged from her parents, something we could relate to. My father and my grandfather would occasionally check in but nothing beyond that and that was of my doing. My responses were short, courteous and respectful but nothing that would delve even an inch beyond surface level. Her communications with her parents were even less frequent, the occasional holiday and birthday text, some of them going unanswered. She had gone out into the world by herself, stumbled, got back up and stumbled again. And yet, she was still marching forward, bloodied knee and all.

While she didn’t care about football, her advice and words would help me that season. She noticed very early on, perhaps even dating back to our time together in Vegas, that I cared too much about other’s opinions on me. It was likely the remnants of growing up in a small town where my family and my last name carried so much weight. I wasn’t just a kid in Prairie View, I was a Gurley and even more than that, I was the next iteration of a lineage of men that helped define the town.

Irene’s skin had grown callous from years of arrows piercing through, most of them originating from her own family and friends. She dropped out of college after one semester. Arrow. She became a dancer at a gentlemen’s club which her parents eventually found out about. Another arrow. She dealt with various boyfriends that were both initially attracted to her because of her job in the nightlife only to then grow jealous and use it against her to diminish her character and value. Another arrow. The friends she would make in the industry, some of them fellow dancers, bartenders, promoters, would reveal themselves to be opportunistic, slighting her at the first chance if it meant an advancement for them.

"If you worry too much about what other people got going on, you ain’t never going to have nothing going on," she would often say.

I internalized this and focused on my individual performances that season, perhaps out of resignation that with two losses on the year already, we weren’t going to be winning anything meaningful that season. I had an interception against Arkansas in a three-point win to end the losing streak and then the next week, we traveled to Jacksonville to play our rival Florida and arguably the best receiver I hade ever faced in Dallas Wilson. Wilson was a five-star recruit when I was coming out of high school so I was familiar with his game. We would beat the Gators 17-10 and while Wilson caught a touchdown, it wasn’t against me and outside of an early jump ball that he beat me on, he was shutout for the rest of the game.

Quite frankly, I had a great rest of the season with two interceptions against Vanderbilt and against LSU, a school that reputed itself to be one of the top producers of NFL wide receivers, I held the speedy Kylan Billiot to two catches for fifteen yards in a blowout win over the Tigers. Somehow, being a selfish player had paid off not only for myself but for the team and we were now headed to the SEC Championship Game.
