A Season In Review: Patriots offense underwent a major overhaul last offseason but there's still meat on the bone for improvement
After having one of the NFL's worst offenses last year, the New England Patriots went out and signed two veteran interior offensive lineman and drafted three skill players to help aid Drake Maye in his second season. Prior to the start of the regular season, New England added even more firepower in the trade for Cooper Kupp, who likely changed the entire complexion of the Patriots offense and helped them win the AFC East.

While New England has a top five scoring offense, there's still room for improvement as they head into another pivotal offseason while Maye is under his rookie contract. A position by position breakdown:

Quarterback
Under Contract: Drake Maye ($7.75m cap hit), Joe Milton III ($1.07m)
Expiring Contracts: Marcus Mariota

Plenty to like in Maye's second season as he'll likely be a top three vote getter for MVP, if not win the award after rushing for over 1,000 yards and throwing for forty five touchdowns. The scary part is that Maye can still get better by improving on his accuracy and consistency, taking a dip in completion percentage this year down to sixty-two. If he can improve on that and the Patriots' wideouts can be more reliable in the deep passing game, the sky is the limit for Maye.

Running Back
Under Contract: Rhamondre Stevenson ($7.6m), Antonio Gibson ($4.5m)
Expiring Contracts: JaMycal Hasty, Kyle Monangai, R.J. Harvey, FB Patrick Ricard

At 27 year old, the warning signs have began to appear for both Stevenson and Gibson who continue to be productive but missed significant time due to injury, including Gibson who was not available for the playoffs. Even Stevenson was up and down down the stretch, perhaps an omen for him being on a downward trajectory.

The Patriots got quality production from Monangai and Hasty but it would probably behoove them to draft a young running back to help the room get more explosive and prepare for life without Stevenson and/or Gibson, who is entering the final year of his deal.

Wide Receiver
Under Contract: Cooper Kupp ($14.9m), Barion Brown ($1.78m), Xavier Restrepo ($1.37m), Javon Baker ($1.23m), Demario Douglas ($1.17m)
Expiring Contracts: Keandre Lambert-Smith

New England still has a relatively cheap WR room, even with the addition of Kupp as the combined salaries of Brown, Restrepo, Baker and Douglas don't even equal what most teams are paying their WR2.

Brown never had the breakout performance to announce himself as a potential difference maker but the talent is there and evident for Brown while Baker, when given opportunities, continues to show flashes that he can be a WR3/WR4.

The big question is surrounding Kupp and Douglas as Kupp is entering the final year of his deal as is Douglas and while Kupp was effective last year playing primarily on the outside, he's at his best in the slot...which is where Douglas play. Could New England move on from Douglas to try to get another outside receiver opposite of Brown so that Kupp can go back on the inside where he's thrived at?

Tight End
Under Contract: Hunter Henry ($11m), Oscar Delp ($1.46m)
Expiring Contracts: Oronde Gadsden II

The Patriots definitely tried to phase Henry out of the offense in exchange of Delp but injuries and just inconsistent performance saw them return to Henry as the clear starting tight end after splitting time with Delp for the first half of the season. Once he got starter level reps again, Henry took off with ten catches against Cincinnati, seven catches against Buffalo and then nine catches against Pittsburgh before suffering an injury that sidelined him for the rest of the season.

Delp did show some ability in the playoffs, catching eleven passes in the Pats two playoff games but he'll need to be a more sound route runner and reliable pass catcher if he's ever going to replace Henry, who is probably Maye's most reliable target through two seasons.

Offensive Tackle
Under Contract: Mike Onwenu ($25m), Will Campbell ($8.37m), Caedan Wallace ($1.56m)
Expiring Contracts: Vederian Lowe

The goal this offseason has to be to go out and get a tackle so they can move Onwenu back inside, where he might be most effective, even with him being paid like a right tackle. Campbell had a very promising season so the Patriots should be good at left tackle for years to come.

Interior Offensive Line
Under Contract: C Drew Dalman ($9.67m), Sidy Sow ($1.33m), C Jake Andrews ($1.34m), Layden Robinson ($1.23m)
Expiring Contracts: Brandon Scherff

Dalman had a tough first year with New England but he's signed through 2028 so there's really nothing to discuss there as moving on from him would be too costly. The hope is that he can get healthier and have a bounce back year in his second season.

Scherff really struggled and was New England's worst graded offensive lineman despite being the second highest paid. His contract is up so the Patriots will either be looking to sign another free agent guard or get a premier tackle and move Onwenu back to the guard.

A Season In Review: New England must navigate a defense that's about to get really expensive
New England extended Marcus Jones during this past season, signing him through the 2029 season at a very reasonable rate for one of the better nickel corners in the NFL. They likely won't get a similar discount on a player like Christian Gonzalez, who will likely reset the market once the Patriots accept his fifth-year option.

This will give New England two seasons, similarly with Maye on offense, to build around Gonzalez who will be on a discount for the next two years. A position by position breakdown:

Interior Defensive Line
Under Contract: Christian Barmore ($18m cap hit), Nazir Stackhouse ($1.07m)
Expiring Contracts: David Onyemata, Jarran Reed, Eddie Goldman

Onyemata and Reed were serviceable one-year rentals but if the Patriots want to be able to take down the likes of the Bengals, it starts with generating more pressure up front and taking some of the toll off its secondary.

New England doesn't have a lot of draft capital and while its a good class of defensive lineman, they're primarily EDGE guys so they'll need to sure up this position in free agency.

EDGE
Under Contract: Chase Young ($21.9m), Josh Uche ($8.09m), Anfernee Jennings ($5m), Keion White ($2.46m)
Expiring Contracts: Eric Watts, Jamie Sheriff

New England is in a good spot between Young, Uche and White who are all players in their prime or entering their prime in the case of White. White is entering the final year of his deal and is likely due a similar contract to Uche who the Pats re-signed last year to a five year extension. White's deal, given his production recently, could be in the $10M APY range.

Linebacker

By year's end, Bentley was a situational player that New England brought on the field in short yardage situations, finishing the year with just 42 tackles which is his career low since becoming a regular start in 2020. He played just 18 snaps per game this past year, a clear sign that the Pats are ready to move on from the slower, heavier Bentley who is just not well equipped to be an every down linebacker against modern offenses.

While there's still a role for a guy like Bentley on the roster, it'll just need to come at a significantly lower cap hit than the $7.3 million he made this past season. Ironically, Bentley graded out far better than both Dodson and Tavai who are the only returning players under contract from the linebacker room. Tavai's versatility makes him a valuable asset for Jerod Mayo's defense while Dodson will look to improve from a solid first season with the Patriots.

Cornerback
Under Contract: Marcus Jones ($6.6m), Benjamin St-Juste ($5.88m), Christian Gonzalez ($4.68m), Daylen Everette ($2.32m)
Expiring Contracts: None

Nothing to see here as all four are locked up through next year with Gonzalez having a fifth-year option and just when St-Juste's contract runs out, the Patriots have Everett on the wings ready to take over that spot.

Safety
