Cavaliers pull off the impossible, stun Notre Dame behind Hawthorne's three touchdowns

"They said this couldn't be done," commented cornerback Tayon Holloway. "They said our secondary was too 'inept' and 'didn't have enough speed to compete'. They said our offense was too one dimensional to come in here and whoop they ass. I guess they confused us with somebody else."

The trash-talking was at an all time high after the Virginia Cavaliers marched onto Notre Dame Stadium and defeated the #6-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 28-17, behind a stout defense that bent but never broke and running back Donte Hawthorne, who was a short-yardage nightmare for the Fighting Irish front seven.

"His ability to keep churning his legs, and pounding the rock into the end zone wins us game: that's a flat out truth," said offensive coordinator Slade Nagle, famous for his love of running the ball. "Him and Noah [Vaughn] are absolutely thunder and lightning, and they paced us to win this game. This is huge for them. I couldn't be happier."

After the two teams battled it out through a scoreless first quarter, it was Notre Dame who ended up blinking first to the first of three touchdowns from Hawthorne. The team battled extremely efficiently in the second quarter, with the Fighting Irish having to settle for a late field goal to only be down 14-10 in a shocker of a first half.

"We got caught looking ahead," said a dejected Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman. "We were caught asleep at the wheel and we paid for it today. They beat us, and we'll have to own that."

Another dominant performance from future All-American tight end Dom President was another integral piece for the Cavaliers' upset victory, as well as a momentum-swinging interception from veteran corner Dre Walker late in the game to shutter an already-frantic Notre Dame crowd.

Virginia and Coach James Xavier have shook the nation to its core with its thorough victory and with that, will return home next week. They will be hosting the 1-5 Duke Blue Devils in an ACC matchup.

Our defensive front really set the tone. Stifled the run and made Carr uncomfortable so he couldn't torture our secondary. Offense milked the clock with long, methodical drives. It was a perfect storm.

Coach James Xavier's Gameplan

"This is a Duke team that is the flux of their reshaping. It's evident from how many underclassmen they have starting. That does not mean that they cannot hang with us. They certainly can. If we've proven anything, we've proven this year that it does not matter what the makeup of a roster is, or what the analysts think, its about who comes out and performs the best. They're hungry for anything, and they have nothing to lose. We need to be present in this moment and perform, or we'll be on the other side of an upset on ESPN tonight."

Holloway calls game! Pick six ends upset attempt as Cavs slip past Devils

If you were going to pick a word to describe head coach James Xavier, offensive coordinator Slade Nagle has the word for you: Maverick.

"This guy has - and excuse my language for the families at home - balls of steel," he said at the post-game press conference after Virginia scores 21 points in the fourth quarter to steal a victory against the Duke Blue Devils, 28-24. "I would be content taking the points for a field goal, or punting on fourth-and-long, and this guy would just come over with a play call. He's insane. But insanity is exactly what we needed this game."

The Cavaliers started the game with a touchdown but quickly found themselves scrambling for anything on offense, unable to capitalize on their opportunities. The defense began to bend, as Duke quarterback Maalik Murphy threw three unanswered touchdowns to wide receiver Jayden Moore. It looked like the lifeless Cavaliers were returning home after an inspiring victory last weekend in South Bend just to drop a shocker.

Then, something clicked. A fourth-and-long decision to go for it and quarterback Anthony Colandrea taking advantage of a strong safety blitzing to hit Jaden Gibson with a 27-yard strike to get the Cavaliers back in the game. A strip sack from the defense getting the ball right back for the Cavaliers leading to Donte Hawthorne's 15th touchdown on the ground.

Cornerback Tayon Holloway would seal the game a mere moment later, jumping an out route for a pick six that sent Scott Stadium into absolute pandemonium.

"That's why Coach brought me here, I do this." said the cornerback, one of Coach Xavier's prized pickups from the transfer portal. The Cavaliers now rebound to 2-2 in ACC play, ballooning their record to 6-2.
