Game 2 Preview: vs Merrimack (0-0)

The Huskies welcome Merrimack College to The Rent for the second year in a row, which is also the second-ever match-up between the two schools. UConn has played at least one FCS opponent in each season since moving up to FBS in 2002 and is 21-2 in those games.

Returning senior Andrew Beebe split duties last year, but led the team in passing yards (795), touchdowns (8), and threw 2 interceptions. Cole Stockdale led the team with 1,247 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns. Elijah Heard is the team's best receiver, who recorded 26 receptions for 471 yards, and caught 5 touchdowns last season.

Huskies get right with a home-opening win over Merrimack, 27-21

EAST HARTFORD, CT — It was exactly what the Connecticut Huskies football team needed after last week's shutout loss. Nick Evers was accurate, Skyler Bell showed his playmaking ability, and the run game controlled the tempo, as UConn overtook Merrimack for its first win on Saturday.

"It was a complete game from start to finish," said Huskies coach Jim Mora. "We let up a couple big runs in the first half, but our guys adjusted really well and I'm proud of them for this first win."

Evers, who struggled last week with just 76 yards and two interceptions, bounced back with 273 yards, two touchdown passes, and no turnovers. While his former Wisconsin teammate, Bell, also had a breakout game with 112 yards and a score on 10 catches, proving the connection still exists. Bell also racked up 48 yards in punt returns, which he almost broke loose on one of them.

Running back Victor Rosa provided a burst of offense for the Huskies with 75 yards on the ground and 30 receiving yards. Though he serves as Cam Edwards' backup, he played a pivotal role in the win.


On defense, Tui Faumuina-Brown was an anchor once again. He led the team with two tackles for loss.

Though he didn't appear in the box score, edge rusher/linebacker Julien Simon racked up four tackles and put constant pressure on the quarterback.

Malcolm Bell led the team with two huge pass deflections.

Next week, the UConn Huskies travel to Duke for an evening affair.

I was glad I could get him moving the ball. Really struggled week 1, so this was a good “almost practice run” to get some experience and learn some things to take into next week
