"You never know what you're going to get from rivalry weekend. They don't like us, we don't particularly care for them. They're in the way, and that's that. They have a really strong defense - particularly up the middle and once you get to the second level with their linebackers. They have a strong offensive line as well. We know what we need to do, hell - you out there knows what we need to do. No survivors. I've never lost a rivalry game, and I don't plan to start now."

Defense holds steady to slide past Hokies in rivalry week

It wasn't pretty, but we got there. In rainy, sludge-like conditions in enemy territory, the Virginia Cavaliers have finished their season with a win over their rival, Virginia Tech, 28-24. Wide receiver Jaden Gibson scored two touchdowns and running back Donte Hawthorne got over the century mark in rushing yards as the key performers in the game.

Quarterback Anthony Colandrea struggled in this affair, the conditions certainly didn't help, but it was his decision-making that was quite suspect. He spotted the Hokies' defense a touchdown that almost broke the camel's back. "I wasn't proud of that one," he said after the game. "I'm happy we got the win, but I could have brought more leadership to that one. I'll get right."

The defense continued their "bend, don't break" mantra with another solid effort that saw them intercept Virginia Tech quarterback Davi Belfort twice - one from all-star cornerback Tayon Holloway and another from linebacker Myles Brown. Star defensive end Jewett Hayes got the game-ending sack to stifle any comeback attempts from Virginia Tech to help hold onto the win.

"This wasn't our best game," said head coach James Xavier, reaching double-digit wins for a second consecutive season. "We're proud we were able to win in such an emotional game, but we need to execute better. A little bit of rain can't slow us down this much. We've got work to do."

Virginia will wait on some results to figure out who they will draw next.
