I think I need to create a formula using QB AWR/coordinator tenure to determine that, not sure how but I do think its a nice add to the game to make AWR rating matter for QBs. in the past i've used it to account for audible abilities

Change the star rating on the plays in the playbook to lower the frequency of more "complex" plays.

Projecting potential replacements as Hurricanes look to take next step towards national championship

Each year under head coach Mario Cristobal, the Miami Hurricanes have improved their win totals from barely sniffing bowl eligibility in the first two seasons to making the College Football Playoffs each of the last two years, winning the program's first ever playoff game and winning the ACC for the first time last season.

Miami begins spring practices with the hopes of taking that next step towards winning the national championship for the first time since 2001. While Miami returns several key players such as running back Mark Fletcher Jr. and offensive tackle Francis Maugioa who delayed their entry into the NFL Draft, the Hurricanes will need to replace some talent lost to the draft and graduation.

Here are the players on deck as potential replacements:

DE Rueben Bain Jr.
2025 stats: 62 tkl, 41 TFL, 23.5 sacks, PBU, Maxwell, Bednarik, Lombardi, Hendricks, First Team All-American, First Team All-ACC
Replacement candidates: Armando Blount (junior), Walt Coffey (sophomore), Elias Rudolph (redshirt sophomore), OLB Malik Bryant (senior)

Simply put, there is no replacing Rueben Bain who was among college football's elite, becoming the first defensive player since Manti Te'o in 2012 to win the Maxwell Award. When Miami needed a play, especially on third down, Bain would disrupt opposing quarterbacks and force them into a bad decision or drag them down for a sack.

Miami's leading sack artist next year will likely be Marquise Lightfoot, who started opposite of Bain last year and was second on the team with sixteen sacks. In most years, that'd be leading the country, let alone the team.

The Hurricanes have a few options in Armando Blount who played a rotational role last year with twelve tackles for loss and five sacks as well as an interception. Blount was a five-star recruit and entering his junior season, he should began to come into his own as a dominant player. Another option is another five-star in sophomore Walt Coffey who made a few splash plays last year with nine tackles for loss and nearly totaled 200 snaps last year as he made the switch from outside linebacker to defensive end as a true freshman.

If Miami wants a more twitched up athlete opposite of Lightfoot, they could look into Elias Rudolph and Malik Bryant who are lighter, more athletic options that saw limited roles last year with Bryant recording 10 tackles for loss and Rudolph getting two sacks in his 83 snaps played.

LT Jalen Rivers
2025 stats: 15 games played, 15 games started, 76.8 PFF grade, Second Team All-American, First Team All-ACC
Replacement candidates: Markell Bell (redshirt senior), Brian Grant (redshirt senior), Samson Okunlola (redshirt junior), Francis Mauigoa (senior)

Miami redshirted Markell Bell last year, a sign that he is at least part of their plan to replace Jalen Rivers who has been the team's starting left tackle for the past three seasons. Bell might be Miami's most physically impressive offensive linemen at six-foot-nine and 340 pounds but he needs to improve his bend, hands placement and footwork if he's going to survive at the Power 4 level.

The team added Brian Grant from the transfer portal who started fourteen games for Tennessee last year in the SEC and surrendered only three sacks. Former five-star Samson Okunlola has primarily played inside for Miami but came to the Hurricanes as a left tackle and had some good games last year, eventually overtaking the left guard spot from Michael McCoy. If Miami does decide to move Okunlola back to his natural left tackle spot, McCoy could slide right into that left guard spot or they could go with Ryan Rodriguez or Will Larkins, both of which have starting experience.

The other option is to flip All-ACC right tackle Francis Maugioa from the right side to left tackle, where Mauigoa might have some interest in playing and proving to NFL teams that he can do it. He's projected to be among the first tackles selected in next year's draft but if he can show that he's athletic enough to play on the blindside, it could improve his earning potential in the pros.

RG Anez Cooper
2025 stats: 15 games played, 15 games started, 67.5 PFF grade, Second Team All-ACC
Replacement candidates: Ryan Rodriguez (redshirt senior), Will Larkins (redshirt junior), Matthew McCoy (redshirt senior), Samson Okunlola (redshirt junior)

We'll need to see how the battle at left tackle shakes out because if Okunlola doesn't win that job, he could very well just slide into either guard spots, having started several games last year at left guard. If he does, Matthew McCoy could replace Anez Cooper on that right side unless the team decides to go with the loser of the center starting battle, between incumbent Ryan Rodriguez and transfer addition Will Larkins who has given up just three sacks in the past two seasons at Georgia State.

It's tough to handicap these battles without knowing what type of offense new offensive coordinator Chris Weinke wants to run as Okunlola is pretty solid in pass pro, as is Rodriguez, but someone like McCoy might give them more juice in the running game.

LB Wesley Bissainthe
2025 stats: 105 tkl, 28 TFL, 3 sacks, 2 INT, 7 PBU, 2 FF, Butkus
Replacement candidates: James Fernandez (sophomore), Raul Aguirre Jr. (senior), Cam Pruitt (redshirt sophomore), Jacques Turk (sophomore)

The leader of the defense, Bissainthe brought the energy and set the tone for a Miami defense that was among the best in the country. From a leadership standpoint, there isn't an obvious replacement as none of these guys are proven.

There is some talent with Raul Aguirre patiently waiting his turn but saw his playing time dwindle last year compared to his sophomore year as Jacques Turk and James Fernandez saw more snaps as true freshman.

Fernandez needs to clean up his tackling if he's going to be an every down player but the physical traits are there, as is the case with Turk and Cam Pruitt as their speed jumps off the screen when you watch them play.

WR Mario Williams
2025 stats: 59 rec, 715 yds, 7 TD
Replacement candidates: Ray Ray Joseph (senior), Eric Incoom (sophomore), Joshisa Trader (junior)

Ray Ray Joseph was Xavier Restrepo's backup for his first two seasons and then spent last year as Mario Williams' backup so he's the clear favorite to fill that role in the slot that's been vacated by Williams. He's got a ton of big play potential even though he's primarily been used as a dump off guy in his time at Miami, averaging eleven yards per reception the past two years but did average sixteen yards per return as a kickoff returner, scoring on a 67-yard touchdown back in 2024.

Speaking of returns, Eric Incoom made his impact there as a true freshman, averaging fifteen yards per kickoff return and scoring a punt return touchdown, nearly totaling five hundred yards in that category.

If Miami wants to go back towards a Restrepo type in terms of reliable hands and route running, they could decide to slide Joshisa Trader from competing for one of the outside receiver roles into the slot. He's got some of the best hands on the team and made a bunch of contested catches last year with the bulk of his yardage coming after the catch.

WR Sam Brown
2025 stats: 28 rec, 321 yds, 4 TD
Replacement candidates: Isaiah Horton (redshirt senior), Joshisa Trader (junior), Chance Robinson (redshirt sophomore), Miguel Escobar (redshirt freshman), Davon Momah (freshman)

Plenty of options here with the big bodied Isaiah Horton, who is entering his final year of eligibility. If the Canes decide to keep Trader on the outside, he ended last year as the team's most targeted receiver on the outside once Jeremiah Smith was hurt.

In terms of new blood, keep an eye on third year man Chance Robinson who saw some playing time when Smith was hurt but never really got involved in the offense while Miguel Escobar has the size and speed combination that you ideally want from an outside receiver.

The dark horse is Davon Momah, the five-star true freshman that is already turning heads during winter workouts. He's big, physical with the ability to get over the top of defenses with his speed and acceleration as well as a natural feel for the position. He's already drawing comparisons to Jeremiah Smith within the coaching staff so if he can get going in the spring and heading into fall camp, he could be a starter as a true freshman.

TE Elijah Arroyo
2025 stats: 68 rec, 678 yds, 4 TD
Replacement candidates: Riley Williams (senior), Elija Lofton (junior)

Miami's leading receiver from last year, Elijah Arroyo was a nice combination of run blocking, reliable hands and a vertical threat from the tight end position. Miami doesn't have all of that in one player as Williams is probably their best blocker and Elija Lofton is the best athlete.

We saw Lofton be utilize in a multitude of roles last year, carrying the ball fourteen times for 100 yards and a touchdown and also caught a touchdown pass. Meanwhile, Williams was used almost exclusively as a blocker, catching only four passes in the past two seasons despite playing nearly five hundred snaps. He'll get a chance to prove himself as a pass catcher with Arroyo gone but Miami could end up using these two tight ends as a co-starter for most of the season until separation is created.

CB Devin Moore
2025 stats: 78 tkl, 16 TFL, 1.5 sacks, 4 INT, 11 PBU
Replacement candidates: Robert Stafford (redshirt junior), O.J. Frederique Jr. (redshirt sophomore)

Both Robert Stafford and O.J. Frederique Jr. have plenty of experience with Stafford playing nearly four hundred snaps last year as part of the rotation at corner along with Hezekiah Masses, who also graduated.

Frederique Jr. started as a true freshman before Miami opted to redshirt him last year as they added three transfer portal corners in Devin Moore, Dontae Balfour and Masses. Don't let the redshirt fool you, Miami still believes in Frederique and view him as one of their top corners but felt that he was rushed into playing as a freshman when a developmental year might have been needed.

Miami is also losing D'yoni Hill, who was Damari Brown's backup in the slot.

Keke Hagg shines in Hurricanes debut as Orange wins Hurricanes' spring game

Orange scored a 28-17 victory Saturday over White in the 2026 Miami spring game at Cobb Stadium in Coral Gables.

All eyes were on the quarterback quartet of returning starter Emory Williams, prized prospect Keke Hagg, Titus Willis and Judd Anderson. A lackluster performance from Williams would have left the door open for Hagg to make a serious push for the starting job in fall camp but Williams and Hagg dueled it out on Saturday with the redshirt junior looking just as impressive.

As a whole, the game was far more competitive and realistic than most spring games. Under new offensive coordinator Chris Weinke, the Hurricane offense picked up the pace several times to simulate the regular season, which provided a good test for the defense.

Quarterback battle heats up
Williams led Miami to the College Football Playoff after taking over for Nicholas Vattiato midway through the season, winning the ACC and their quarterfinal game against Penn State. Williams was underwhelming in his final appearance of the season but seemed to put that behind him, being on target on Saturday and in rhythm within the offense, getting the ball out quickly to his playmaker.

It wasn't all Williams, however. On his first drive leading the Orange squad, Hagg dropped back and launched a 50-yard touchdown to Chance Robinson. Hagg completed both of his pass attempts during the drive for 73 yards and finished the game with 112 yards, completing eleven of his sixteen pass attempts.

Williams threw for 221 yards while completed 12-of-19 passes while Willis was 8 of 14 for 85 yards. Judd Anderson was the fourth quarter to enter the game, completing 8 of 15 passes for 35 yards.

Weinke said after the game that all four quarterbacks performed well throughout the spring but that Williams and Hagg were the most consistent, citing that Williams was able to stack the most positive practices together.

"We talk about stacking good days and good practices," Weinke said of the group, "I think all of them had good days, good practices but [Williams] and [Hagg] really were able to string together some really good practices in a row, not making mistakes, making plays and with [Williams], he just got better and better as he strung more and more good practices together."

Cristobal and Weinke have both maintained that its an open quarterback competition but that they are looking to have a starter in place heading into fall camp. Miami did not name Vattiato the team's starting quarterback until after the third week of fall camp. Miami isn't looking to replicate that under Weinke who says that he has a good idea of who the starting quarterback should be.

"If we were playing a game together, I think we know who the guy would be," said a smiling Weinke, "But we don't have a game for another couple of months so we'll see."

Spreading the wealth
A total of 19 different players caught at least one pass Saturday, with Chance Robinson leading the way with four receptions for 118 yards. Robinson, a redshirt sophomore, hasn't played much in his time at Coral Gables but with Jeremiah Smith still sidelined, he got playing time than usual this spring and was one of Miami's better receivers these past few weeks.

Isaiah Horton had four catches for 76 yards while Joshisa Trader, Ray Ray Joseph, Eric Incoom and Davon Momah each had three receptions.

Momah flashed his quickness on a 21-yard catch late in the first quarter. The true freshman gathered in a short pass from Williams near the left sideline, then made a nifty move to avoid a defender and turn a short gain into a 21-yard pickup. Similar to Robinson, he's been one of the players that has stepped up in Smith's absence who the team is hoping to have back in time for fall camp as he recovered from his pectoral surgery back in November.

Plenty of mixing and matching along the offensive line
Miami has a ton of talent and options along the offensive line and showcased it on Saturday rolling out a bevy of different combinations. The lineup that was in front of Emory Williams for the first drive was from left to right: Brian Grant, Matthew McCoy, Ryan Rodriguez, Samson Okunlola and Francis Maugioa.

This lineup only played one drive together as Markell Bell and Brian Grant rotated at left tackle as well as Okunlola while Ryan Rodriguez, transfer Will Larkins and redshirt junior Antonio Tripp Jr. rotated series at center. When Okunlola was left tackle, Frankie Tinilau came in at left guard while Deryc Plazz rotated in at both guard spots.

Miami seems to have a really strong group of nine offensive linemen that they trust, including redshirt freshman George Robledo who missed the game due to a minor injury but who has been in there with the starting lineup at various points this spring. We'll see what the final five looks like come the season opener but it might be a situation where Miami is plugging and playing different guys week to week and seeing how it goes.

Robby Washington making noise at corner
Don't be surprise if converted wide receiver Robby Washington ends up being one of Miami's starting corners.

Washington's intensity and competitive spirit stands out in practice and it followed him in the game. He got beat a few times with Robinson's physicality getting the better of him but when matched up against smaller receiver such as Joshisa Trader, Washington's stickiness might be the best on the team already.

He still needs to learn the defense and understand the nuance of the position, especially in some of the more complex zone coverages, but when asked to simply stick a receiver, he's already one of Miami's best options there.

Miami loses some depth to the transfer portal with six transfers

Six Miami Hurricanes players have entered the transfer portal in redshirt sophomore running back Chris Wheatley-Humprey, redshirt junior tight end Jackson Carver, redshirt junior center Antonio Tripp Jr, senior linebacker Raul Aguirre Jr., redshirt sophomore safeties Dylan Day and Isaiah Thomas.

Among the six, Aguirre played the biggest role last season as a reserve but saw his role diminish with the mergence of Jacques Turk and James Fernandez.

Tripp rotated at center with the first team during the spring game and has been competing for that starting center role with incumbent starter Ryan Rodriguez and transfer Will Larkins.

Miami opens fall camp with Emory Williams as starting quarterback, freshman Keke Hagg to be involved in the offense

Miami head coach Mario Cristobal nonchalantly announced that redshirt junior Emory Williams is Miami's starting quarterback, saying it in plain language during the head coach's first time speaking to the media since the start of fall camp.

"Emory [Williams] is our guy," Cristobal said when asked about how the first team reps were divvied up in practice, "He's our starting quarterback and we want to get him comfortable in this offense with the other guys so we're glad he was able to separate himself from the packet and the competition is always ongoing but he's our starter."

Williams averaged 208 yards per game last season, throwing sixteen touchdowns to just five interceptions with the bulk of his interceptions coming in games where Miami was trailing and forced the ultra efficient and conservative Williams to push the ball down the field. He split first team reps with freshman Keke Hagg, redshirt sophomore Judd Anderson and redshirt freshman Titus Willis throughout the spring with Hagg and Williams both playing with the first team offense in the spring game.

Miami offensive coordinator Chris Weinke alluded to the more mobile and explosive Hagg having a role within the offense even with the announcement of Williams as a starter.

"We want to get [Hagg] him out there," Weinke said, "He's too good of a talent not to use and he offers us something a little bit differently so we'll see how it plays out."

Cristobal also confirmed that receiver Jeremiah Smith is still recovering from last season's pectoral injury and that his status for the season opener is currently up in the air. Smith has yet to practice with the team this offseason.

Miami is back, after all.

The Hurricanes have made it to back-to-back College Football Playoff appearances, winning the ACC for the first time last season and they did it all while benching their starting quarterback halfway into the season.

The offense should be stabilized with Emory Williams entering his second year as a starter while the defense, even with the loss of Rueben Bain, should continue to improve under Lance Guidry as they bring back plenty of starters and have a ton of talent from Miami's loaded recruiting classes under head coach Mario Cristobal

Previewing Miami's Offense for 2026
The biggest question is around Jeremiah Smith and his injury. Smith tore his pectoral muscle last year and his recovery from the surgery is taking long than anticipated, which could put his junior season in jeopardy.

If Miami doesn't have Smith, the offense did look constipated at times without that down the field threat. The Hurricanes, however, do have one of the ACC's best offensive line and with three talented running backs in Mark Fletcher, Chris Johnson Jr. and Jordan Lyle, Miami might be able to lean on their running game for much of the season. If they want to get that elusive national title, however, the passing game will need to come alive which will happen once Smith comes back.

The coaching staff is high on redshirt sophomore Chance Robinson, who took a big step forward this offseason. There are also veterans Isaiah Horton, Ray Ray Joseph and Joshisa Trader as well as the young guys in Eric Incoom and Davon Momah who might be the fastest players on the team.

Previewing Miami's Defense for 2026
The scary part about Miami's front four is that it had Rueben Bain Jr. last year on it and even without him, they are still among the nation's best.

Pick your favorite five-star between Armando Blount and Marquise Lightfoot, who are proven talent that were productive last year with Lightfoot finishing second in the ACC with sixteen sacks, behind only Bain. There's also the young guys in Walt Coffey, another five-star, and Elias Rudolph who got plenty of snaps in the playoffs and showed some flashes.

On the interior, it's elite talent on top of elite talent with Justin Scott leading the pack, another former five-star that might be a top-five pick by season's end. Behind him, Miami added a true nose tackle in Maryland's Jordan Phillips to bolster their depth which already included Josh Horton, Artavius Jones, Kevin Yeboah and then the true freshman five-star Shaun Turner. Second year players Dan Mintze and Rico Veasy also round out the depth.

At linebacker, they are losing Wesley Bissainthe but have a former five-star to replace him in James Fernandez who flashed last year in a limited role but needs to clean up his tackling. They return Adarius Hayes, who had six interceptions on the season and is now wearing the No. 1 jersey as a potential All-American.

The secondary returns a ton of talent, even with the loss of Devin Moore, D'yoni Hill and Kamari Wilson. Miami feels a confident with their trio of veteran corners Robert Stafford, Damari Brown and Dontae Balfour who all played major role last year. Behind them, it's O.J. Frederique who started as a true freshman before redshirting last year and Robby Washington, the converted receiver who Miami's coaching staff thinks will be a draft pick in a few years.

At safety, they have three really good ones that have played a ton of football in Jaden Harris, who has started for the past three seasons, and last year starter Markeith Williams who rotated with Zaquan Patterson.

The ACC is on the uptick and Miami will go through a gauntlet of an in-conference schedule with games against Clemson, Virginia Tech, Florida State and Boston College as they play all of the preseason top 25 ACC teams except for Georgia Tech and SMU.

The upside is that all of those games, except for Clemson, are at home. They open the season on the road against South Carolina who lost their starting quarterback Janoris Sellers to the transfer portal and outside of receiver Nyck Harbor, don't pose much of a threat on offense.

The second half of that schedule is tough but they should have Jeremiah Smith back for that stretch.

Projected Final Ranking: 2nd

If Smith does come back this season and he's healthy, it's hard not to predict Miami as a final four team in the playoffs given they made it last year with a first-year starter at quarterback and no Smith. Even with a new offensive coordinator, the offense's consistency should improve this year and if Smith is there when the important games are being played, it's hard to pick against Miami.
